Product Description
Groucho, Harpo, Chico and Zeppo Marx are at their very best in the political satire Duck Soup which is often regarded as the comedy legends' funniest and most popular film. After being appointed dictator of Freedonia, Rufus T. Firefly (Groucho) proceeds to bring the mythical nation to a halt by showing up late and insulting everyone at his inauguration. Hoping to oust the unfit new leader, two spies (Harpo and Chico) are sent from the neighboring Sylvania. Soon enough, war is declared between the two nations with outrageous results. Recognized on the AFI's 100 Years…100 Laughs list and selected for the National Film Registry, this comedy classic features some of the most hilarious sequences every filmed, including the famous mirror sequence and final battle scene, and remains as entertaining and relevant today as it did when it was first released in 1933.

- Reviewed in the United States on March 12, 2023Some of the Marx Brothers' best gags. A few cultural references are dated enough that younger folks may not understand them, but most of the jokes are still hilarious. It's different from modern comedies; there's no character development, and without elaborate setups, the jokes fly thick and fast.
The efforts of the 2 spies (Chico and Harpo) to steal the war plans from Mrs Teasdale (Margaret Dumont) are some of the funniest scenes the Marxes ever put on film, especially when both of them disguise themselves as Groucho. If you watched it before, watch it again - you deserve a treat. If you've never seen it, give it a chance - you might just ROFL.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 14, 2003I recently saw this film at the local rep theater (AFI Silver) and the crowd laughed harder than they do at most modern comedy films. Here and in the film Night at the Opera, the Marx Brothers reach loony heights few comedians ever reach.
The nice thing about comedy is that you don't need to explain a lot of things. Somehow Groucho, as Rufus T Firefly, gets to rule the country of Freedonia (Zeppo is one of his assistants). Chico and Harpo are spies for rival nation Sylvania. They are all wonderfully inept at what they do and the two countries slide hilariously into war.
There are so many classic highlights in this film. Harpo and Chico get into a big rivalry with another peanut vendor. There's the "mirror" scene where Harpo and Groucho are identically dressed and try to outwit each other. The declaration of war becomes a huge parody of Buzby Berkley musicals, and the war itself is endlessly funny. There's also a Paul Revere parody with Harpo that is quite mature for the times at what it is suggesting.
And despite all of this, Groucho still finds time to insult Margaret Dumont, as ever. "Remember gentlemen you are fighting for this woman's honor, which is probably more than she ever did."
The whole film is great, but the last half hour of Duck Soup may be the funniest sequence in American film. Duck Soap is the Marx Brothers at their funniest, often their most political, and also at their most surreal. Why is this film (and King Kong) still not availalbe on DVD?
- Reviewed in the United States on January 28, 2024If you're a fan of Groucho Marx and his brothers, this is one to own for sure. Groucho's performance as Rufus T. Firefly is outstanding, and the legendary mirror routine is in the movie. The DVD arrived in perfect condition.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 24, 2024You gotta love the Marx Brothers, (which I do), to like this film. (You gotta love the Marx Brothers to love “any” of their films.) They were certainly unique and full of clever one liners. I give this a “thumbs up!
- Reviewed in the United States on April 9, 2023It was super to see a comedy that didn't intend to put anyone/group down.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 17, 2011So here we have what is arguably one of the best from The Marx Brothers in their heyday. I'll let others address the movie in traditional "reviewer" outlines and just let you know what this film means to me.
As I understand it, Duck Soup wasn't received very well and may have ended up relegated to the same category as many of the other vaudville converts to cinema that are now little more than interesting footnotes in Hollywood history. The reason that the brothers' shtick, and this movie in particular, transend their peers is their razor sharp, insightful and completely irreverent political and social comentary.
I recall watching these comedies as a kid on Saturday afternoon or late night on local TV and enjoying the shenanigans and the jokes (that I could understand). But I really had an epiphany one evening at an art house showing of this movie. Once I got over the pain in my ribs from laughing so hard over things I didn't see as a kid, I realized, like many of my contemporaries, this movie was an hilarious and penetrating anti-war movie. Very cool.
If you only own one Marx Brothers comedy, I think this would be a great choice, as it happens to be the only one I've gone out of my way to own.
- Reviewed in the United States on December 6, 2023This is a movie that while certainly dated in certain scenes, has remained a classic comedy for 90 years, and for a reason: it's hysterical! This showcases the Marx brothers at their best and proves why they remain listed as one of the greatest acts of all time. Highly recommend!
- Reviewed in the United States on October 2, 2016One of the 5 or 10 funniest movies ever made. This flick is the entire Marx Brothers. See it and you know their genius. Also Leo McCarey (along with the writers) who was the greatest director they ever worked with. It's the only time they ever worked with him. "Duck Soup" interestingly was the Brothers first financial loss. Thus they hooked up with Irving Thalberg at MGM who knew how to gentrify the Marx Brothers into mainstream box office. Their next two films "Night at the Opera" and "A Day at the Races" are funny enough and made big money. But Thalberg died suddenly and the creative support was gone. The rest of their work is forgettable. "Duck Soup" is a subversively mad-capped one-two punch and raised middle finger to the political / economic structure that created the World War. (That's 1914 to 1945 - it was really one war with a 20 year intermission.) The head long anarchy of the Marx Brothers peaked with this awesome comedy. It is their masterpiece.

L'edizione è inglese ma consente la scelta tra varie lingue, tra cui l'italiano. La qualità del DVD è molto buona. Il film è un classico della comicità dei fratelli Marx, con Groucho incontenibile.
