Turns your trimmer into a beast

Turns your trimmer into a beast
I put this on my Husqvarna 128LD. Note that installation on my Husqy requires an extra part which means a call or email to Grass Gator. They sent out the conversion part - essentially a thick plastic washer, pretty quickly and free of charge. I was a little disappointed in the plastic housing for the drive nut, but after my first use, I haven't had an issue with it stripping or getting it off. Obviously, the more you use and abuse this thing, the tighter it will get on the shaft and more chance the plastic housing will strip. Have to laugh at those bragging of cutting down shrubs with 3 inch branches and small trees, then complain that it tightened up on the shaft too much or stripped the housing. I do think the housing will eventually strip - metal construction would have been a better choice in my opinion. But the thing turns your trimmer into a beast. Use as much caution and protection as you would with a chainsaw - this will eat right through flesh and bone. Here's how to install on a Husqvarna 182LD.1. Remove the head. Insert a nail into the little hole on the top of the head behind the shaft housing to stop the shaft from rotating. Then rotate the head off the shaft by hand. (remember that the threads are reversed). When the head comes off, there's also a "driver disc" that should stay on the shaft.2. Install the conversion part - the thick plastic washer/bushing that Grass Gator sends at your request. Keeping the driver disc on the shaft, place the conversion part on the shaft, snug up against the driver disc.Put the wide metal washer on the shaft - it will be between the conversion part and the Gator.3. Find the right nut. The Grass Gator comes with a bunch of nuts and bolts for different applications. One of them - I think it was the largest inside diameter one - will screw on to the shaft. Put that nut in the back cavity of the Grass Gator.4. Install the Gator. Holding the nut in the cavity of the grass gator with your finger, put the Grass Gator, flat side first, on the shaft and rotate the Gator so that the nut threads on to the shaft. With your nail in the hole to keep the shaft from turning, hand tighten the grass gator on the shaft. Thats it!UPDATE 5/21/2016: Its still working great - I used it today to mow down a nasty thorn patch. No problem taking it off my trimmer after I was done. I did post a picture of the extra part that GrassGator sent me to make it fit my Husqy since another Amazon user asked about that... I don't have the part # for that extra part, but if you call Grass Gator (or email them - just visit their grassgator.com and go to tech support) they'll send you the conversion part.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very robust and effective for tough trimming
Reviewed in Canada on July 22, 2019
I bought two of these for my Stihl FS130 a year ago(at the time the full trimmer head was just $3 more than a pack of 3 blades). I have used it for trimming thick undergrowth on some new hiking trails. It has had miles of use and has struck many rocks, so it is time to use the spare head and order some new blades(they are about the same as last year but the price of the complete unit went up).

Despite all the abuse and slightly shorter and bent blades(see photo) the trimmer still works well. It's a very tough, effective unit, and highly recommended for tough clearing work.
