Create High-Quality Documents
Home and Student 2007 gives you access to updated graphics, formatting galleries, and an intuitive user interface that exposes commonly used commands. These features enable you to easily produce high-quality documents that will make you proud. Improved picture, charting, and graphics tools help you produce better-looking documents, spreadsheets, and presentations more quickly, while a large library of standard charts, quick formatting tools, and SmartArt diagrams make it easy to include rich and stunning visuals and charts. The results-oriented user interface makes it easier for you to find and use product features so you can enhance your documents according to your specifications. More stable bullets and numbers, SmartArt diagrams, and graphics and charting galleries provide you with a wealth of other formatting choices. Meanwhile, document themes help ensure a consistent appearance among the documents you create in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, to make working across the programs you use most more convenient. PowerPoint also features context-sensitive tabs and easy-to-use galleries that make it simple for you to include tables and other graphics in your documents.
Enhanced Reliability and Security Features
With an improved automatic Document Recovery tool and the new Document Inspector tool for removing personally identifiable information from your documents, Home and Student 2007 helps you work with more confidence and security. Thanks to these two features, you'll never have to worry about losing documents after a system failure or exposing your personal identification information or unwanted comments to others before sharing your documents.
Packed with innovative features and improvements, Home and Student 2007 has a streamlined interface and an enhanced Help system, including online tutorials with step-by-step instructions, so you can quickly learn the product and find the answers to your questions. In addition, command tabs on the results-oriented Ribbon reveal commonly used commands that previously appeared only in lengthy drop-down menus. The Help system also offers a smooth transition between the Help menu in the Microsoft Office system and Help on the Internet (when connected). Larger, more informative ScreenTips provide help concerning commands, and the command tabs themselves are context-sensitive, changing automatically depending upon the task that you are trying to complete, so you won't waste time figuring out the appropriate command. When you need more guidance, online tutorials provide step-by-step instructions for common tasks.
Organize Notes and Information
Home and Student 2007 includes OneNote, a digital notebook that helps you gather, organize, and search many types of information in one place. This means you can consolidate typed text, images, audio and video recordings, digital handwritten notes, Web clippings, and more on the same page. OneNote also provides flexible note-taking tools to help you organize information the way you want. Categorize important projects or information in a way that makes sense to you, using an easy-to-use layout of notebooks, sections, and pages. Type or organize content anywhere on the page and track important items with customizable note tags. To help keep you on track, the powerful Instant Search feature helps you to find information you are looking for quickly. With it you can even search handwritten notes, the text in images and scanned documents, and spoken words in audio recordings.
Preview Changes and Spot Trends
Home and Student 2007 saves you time by making it easier to format your Office documents with Live Preview. This tool lets you quickly preview proposed changes to your document while you're working on it without having to repeatedly search through layers of menus. Taking a look at your proposed formatting before committing to it lets you experiment without risk and can help minimize future edits. Excel features highly visual conditional formatting with new data bars, more colorful gradients, and icons that you can use to format data based on specific rules, so you can more easily identify key data trends, which can help you study and prepare written papers or reports.
Create and Save Custom Slide Layouts
PowerPoint lets you create presentations with ease using prebuilt and user-defined custom slide layouts. With the custom layout feature you can quickly create the precise layout you envision without being bound by one of the prepackaged, standard layouts. You can then save your custom layout for use in future presentations.
Broader Distribution of Your Documents
Home and Student 2007's features aren't limited to the work you do at home; they extend to broader distribution of your documents and presentations. New support for Portable Document Format (PDF) and XML Paper Specification (XPS) file formats helps ensure increased distribution and sharing of your documents with users on any platform. This is particularly ideal for either sharing documents with friends and families, or for presenting information and assignments in a computer-integrated class.

Great news! Since I just used one of my three installs on my original MS Home and Student Office, I installed one on my new Windows 8 computer. It installed fast and easy and in just about 10 minutes, I was up and running with MS Home And Office 2007. Yes, I know that this is the older version but it installs and works fine in Window 8! And I just opened some files from a flash drive that are from MS Office 2010 and 2013 (they were saved in DOC not DOCX) and every file opened great. Then I tried newer Excel files from a friends PC who has Windows 8 and uses 2013 and everything opened fine. Also she likes to save on DOC and XLS and not the X.
This for me is easier to learn than the OLDER 2003 version. Now that I have been using this software EVERYDAY, I have learned many shortcuts and tricks in it. And, I now give this software a 5 out of 5! I love the QUICK ACCESS TOOLBAR. On this toolbar, you can add the most often used items such as: NEW FILE, PRINT, MARGINS, FONT SIZE, etc. Now that I have just bought a new laptop, I also am using this software in it as well and now I am totally happy with this new MS OFFICE! Now, I have changed my review that I had last year as after working with this software, I now just love it! How time changes things!
THIS IS THE Jan 2008 REVIEW:
RIBBON was really different, but it is easy to learn. The main change is (if you do not change it) is when you save a file in the new OFFICE Word, for example, it saves the last name of the file to DOCX. The older OFFICE versions 97-2003 saved the last name of the file to DOC. So what happens if you do not do the simple steps that I will explain in this later, is that when you just SAVE a file in the new Word, the older WORD 97-2003 cannot read it. But great news, you can FIX this problem so that if you are like me, you go from the OLD OFFICE to the NEW OFFICE and then BACK TO THE OLD OFFICE AGAIN with files. So here is some helpful info to let you be able to work in the NEW OFFICE and then open up the file you saved in the NEW OFFICE to the OLD OFFICE: If you plan to read and write ANY OFFICE 2007 file and open it up to use later OFFICE 2003 (and even OFFICE 2002), this is what works wonderfully and allows you to use the OFFICE 2007 file in older OFFICE PROGRAMS from 1997 to 2003: While in OFFICE 2007, do this: go to the ROUND OFFICE button on the left, choose SAVE options, then choose SAVE AS OFFICE 97-OFFICE 2003. This allows you to save the file in the older OFFICE formats which each of the older OFFICE files end in the letters DOC for example the this file called VACATION-2006.DOC has this name because it was saved in the OLDER OFFICE(this is a older Word Document). (You want to do this step first as soon as you get the NEW OFFICE 2007 because if you do not do this, the program will save the last name file with the extension of DOCX and not DOC). The older Word 97-2003 can only read files that end in DOC, this is why you need to do this. Then later when you go to save a file in OFFICE 2007, go to the ROUND OFFICE BUTTON again. Choose SAVE AS. You then choose the SAVE AS OFFICE 97-2003. I have done this every time I work in OFFICE 2007 and need to open up an OFFICE 2007 file in OFFICE 2002 or 2003. Even with some of the newer features found in OFFICE 2007 such as the PICTURE FORMAT with the more border features, I have not had a problem at all when I save the file this way and then open it up in either OFFICE 2002 or OFFICE 2003. When you use EXCEL 2007, this procedure is done the exact same way. At first, I did not like the new OFFICE 2007. However, I found that after you click each area of the RIBBON, you quickly learn where everything is and is becomes easier and easier to learn. You know what helped me the most in OFFICE 2007? Right clicking my mouse for an INSTANT MENU. Then about 95% of the time, this INSTANT MENU gives me the feature that I need the most and is the quickest to use. However, I sat down and clicked each area of the RIBBON for about 15 minutes and then I learned the program. And I am a long time MS OFFICE user of many years. And using the right mouse key for an INSTANT MENU works great in ANY Windows program from OFFICE to Internet Explorer. The reason that I just gave this program a 3 and not a 5 is that I feel that the filing system should have kept the older DOC and not added the DOCX. However, this can be overcome, I know as I did the above steps and have opened MANY OFFICE 2007 files in my OLD OFFICE 2002 (and that is wonderful)!
UPDATE: August 2010 - Just purchased a new computer and installed the newer MS Office Home and Student 2010 and it is wonderful. Even better then the 2007 version. So the 2010 version is even a better choice.
OK. Enough of that. About the software. It is definitely an upgrade and Excel especially has a different look and feel to it, although I can't see where there's a whole lot of difference in the functionality. The formulas for Excel are all organized alot more neatly although the other buttons at the top seem to be more scattered. Word and PowerPoint are basically the same as the previous versions except they have been given the same "tabbed menu interface" that Excel is now sporting. The tabs are going to take some getting used to but I know that once I get used to it, I will like it alot better because when you click on the tabs, the options are more spread out and even give you word and picture descriptions of what task each button performs.
I have never used OneNote before, but it gives a very nice introduction once you open it up for the first time. It tells you all about what it does and even gives you some interactive examples on how to use it. I am currently going back to college to get another degree so this may help me with my notetaking (or help me with my lack of notetaking ability). Here is a brief statement that comes up when you open up the program for the first time:
OneNote is a place for gathering, organizing, searching, and sharing notes, clippings, thoughts, reference materials, and other information. All your notes will be visible here -- organized by notebooks, sections, and pages.
Overall I like the look and feel of the 2007 Office version as compared to previous versions. I think the addition of the Microsoft OneNote is definitely a good one since this is the Office Home and Student Edition and most likely if you are looking to purchase this, you are a student.
I use this program to write novels for self-publishing, which requires some fancy formatting here and there, and so far it has served me well in this capacity. It allows me to format my documents in a variety of styles, usually 6" by 9" in size, though I publish on Smashwords in 8 1/2" x 11" sometimes. I find Word fairly easy to use, though it took me a while to get to know all the features I needed. If you're new to Word I'd recommend getting a tutorial manual or program to walk you through the features, because Word's "Help" function is not particularly useful. These days this is an old version of the program; there has been a 2010 version and a 2013 version since this version came out, and it's wisest to stay current with software. Only buy this program if you're going to use it on an old computer with Windows Vista installed on it.
As to Word, this is an outstanding program which should handle all your word processing needs for now and into the future. It is the industry trend-setter for a good reason; it is superb!

Most of the other adverse comments by reviewers have been around One Note instead of Outlook being offered in this suite. While accepting there is no comparison between thsee two alternatives, this does not prevent you unleashing overall value by using One Note as you see fit and instead simply replace the lack of Outlook's email and calendar with a wholly free alternative, if having a Personal Information Manager (PIM) software tool is that important to you!
That alternative (as covered in a recent issue (January 2010) of "What Laptop" magazine) is to install the Mozilla Thunderbird free email on your computer and set this up to synchronise with your preferred email accounts. Then because Thunderbird has no calendar or organiser installed as standard, download and install the Sunbird Calendar via "Lightning" into Thunderbird for the creating and sharing of calendar events. That is followed by installing "GooSync" which allows synchronisation of the Thunderbird installed calendar with Google Calendar and other chosen external devices. The overall end result is to create a free PIM alternative if required to work alongside your Microsoft 2007 Home and Student Edition and overcome its absence of offering Outlook.
All I can say, is "simplicity itself" What an excellent product, so well thought out. More than I expected. It installed in just a few minutes, without any problems at all. I then went ahead and installed it onto my sons laptop, also without any problems.
So if you want a new and refreshing version of Office, then this is the one for you. Yes it is different, but then that is why we buy it. Spend half an hour pressing all the links, see how it works.
Also what great value from Amazon, and delivery once again, quick and without problems. Thank you Amazon, it is a pleasure buying from you.
Installed without problems. Works perfectly.
Very pleased with this puchase and this seller.
