Perfect for what it is supposed to do
The quality of the materials is wonderfull, i thought the ballhead would be so-so but actually it outperforms the tripod. The ballhead can handle the 11 pounds this combo claims but the tripod doenst at some angles/positions.The most important is to UNDERSTAND that if you buy this combo it doesnt mean that it will replace your regular (big) tripod. This tripod works wonderfull if you "hug" something with the legs. It also works great for macro... as you can check in my video. This tripod would have save me a lot of time asking strangers to take pictures of me and my girlfriend while traveling in Paris and Brussels. In my video you can see how it handles a Nikon D90 + Battery Grip with 2 batteries + 18-200mm VRII + SB600 flash. I also tested it with a heavier D300 + 70-300mm VR + SB600 flash.I am impressed with how this combo was able to keep everything thight hanging from a door and a tree branch.I didnt rate it 5 stars because few sections of the legs came not as tight as the majority.I hope this video helps, and check the pictures i uploaded too. This thing does exactly what it is suppossed to do, it fits in any backpack, its light and the ballhead is simply superb.

I use the Gorillapod Focus GP8 with my Battery-Packed 5D and 17-40L Lens and 30D mounted with a 50mm 1.4 lens.
First off, the Battery-Packed 5D is (sadly) a bit too heavy for the GP8 in that the legs start to sag due to the tremendous amount of weight from the 5D. Not a big deal. I've learned how to take advantage of the Gorillapod's flexibility. If you shape the legs like it was a walking monster octopus (minus 4 legs)(bend (from top to bottom) at ball #5 and ball #7 on all 3 legs) the Gorillapod seems to be able to handle and maintain the weight very nicely.

Absolutely no problem with my 30D mounted onto the GP8.

I'm also using Joby's BH1 Ball Head which is an excellent addition to my set-up. It allows easy and convenient mounting and off-mounting of my cameras from the Gorillapod. - Buy a second Quick Release Replacement Clip if you're using more than one camera.

At first, the Gorillapod's legs are stiff and a bit hard to position/maneuver but after it loosened up with use, it seems to flex and shape very easily. It's light, compact and easy to carry around vs having to carry around my manfrotto tripod.

All in all, I'm very happy with my purchase and recommend the Gorillapod Focus GP8 to anyone looking for an inexpensive, portable, durable, flexible and compact tripod.

I BOUGHT THIS PRODUCT TO GET A LIGHTWEIGHT, FLEXIBLE TRIPOD/ANCHORING DEVICE FOR MY MIDWEIGHT CANON 50D/60D WITH 17-55 2.8, 70-300 4-5.6 CANON LENSES AND A 105 MACRO LENSE TO USE IIIN TRAVELING AND HIKING. BASED ON MANY REVIEWS I SELECTED THE FOCUS. I RECEIVED THE PRODUCT FRIDAY AND TESTED IT, WITH ALL LENSES PLUS A SPEEDLIGHT 430, ON A FAIRLY SLICK PLASTICIZED TABLE CLOTH, A KITCHEN COUNTER, AGAIN FAIRLY SLICK BUT NOT POLISHED GRANITE, THE BACK OF A KITCHEN CHAIR, THE ARM OF AN UPHOLSTERED COUCH, AND THE DOWNWARD PORTION OF A STAIR BANISTER. I USED ALL ANGLES, VERTICLE, HORIZONTAL, AND THOSE THAT SEEMED TO BE A GOOD TEST OF EXTREME WEIGHT DISTRIBUTION. ALSO TRIED IT STRAIGHT UP, ZOOMED WITH THE 430 ON IT, PLUS MY 50d BODY.
THE NET: 1. IT DOES TAKE SOME HAND AND FINGER STRENGTH TO MANIPULATE THE ARMS AND TO SECURE THE BALLHEAD. THE MORE EXPENSIVE BALL HEADS HAVE LEVERLIKE TIGHTENERS, BUT COST AN ARM AND A LEG. IF YOU HAVE POOR HAND AND FINGER STRENGTH THEN GET ANOTHER PRODUCT. BUT IF IT WEREN'T TIGHT THEN IT WOULDN'T HOLD THE CAMERA. I'M 74 AND HAD NO PROBLEM. 2. MINE CAME WITH A LOOSE FASTENER ON THE BALL HEAD. A HEX WRENCH FIXED IT FINE. 3. IT HELD ALL OF MY EQUIPMENT VERY SOLIDLY WITH NO PROBLEM, NO SETTLING, IN ALL SITUATIONS. IT DOES, PERHAPS, REQUIRE SOME GOOD FEELING FOR VARIOUS WEIGHT DISTRIBUTIONS BUT THE ARMS AND BALLHEAD PERFORMED WELL IN ALL SITUATIONS. ICAN'T TELL HOW IT WOULD ACT WITH LONG "L" CLASS LENSES BUT I FELT CONFORTABLE WITH IT. I WOULD BUY AGAIN IN A FLASH. BUT 4. AMAZON REDUCED THEIR PRICE BY $20 RIGHT AFTER I GOT IT. I DIDN'T LIKE THAT. AND 5. THE BOX IT ARRIVED IN WAS ESSENTIALLY OPEN, SECURED ONLY BY THE SHIPPING LABELS. ALL ARRIVED ALL RIGHT, BUT NOT GREAT SHIPPING.

I never thought it would seem necessary to take the time to write a review of a tripod; obviously, the Gorillapod has proven me wrong. The strength combined with versatility makes this product essential to any serious photographer/cinematographer. For the past six months, I've been editor/producer of an extremely low-budget college film. Since my purchase of the Gorillapod, I've seen it's ability to quickly solve issues and reduce the price of catching difficult shots. My friend (writer and director), likes to shoot each scene at every angle possible (which is great for an editor). The other day we were shooting one of the major confrontations in the film, and thought we shoot get a high-angle shot. Filming this angle seemed impossible until I ended up climbing a tree and wrapping the arms around one of the branches. I'd had the Gorillapod long enough to not feel the terror of relying on one item to hold the weight of expensive equipment. However, I knew as I wrapped the arms around the branch that it's apparence is misleading. The director has a Focus himself now, and uses it in ways I've never thought of (such as clinging two arms over each side of the shoulder and using the fourth arm as a grip eliminates the need for a steady-cam). I also am taking a photography course, and my interest in night photography has made this product vital to getting shots requiring long exposures. Overall, the Gorillapod Focus has endless possibilities, and is an essential addition to anyones photographic arsenal. I highly recommend purchasing one, even if it cuts into a tight budget; it's advantages make the price more than fair.

The legs are quite strong and can easily support my Fuji X-T1 with a prime lens while upright (I don't have a heavy zoom lens yet, so can't comment). Of course, where it really shines is if you can wrap the legs around a tree branch or a column or a car door or a fence etc.

Pros: Light, compact, affordable and versatile.
Cons: Very short - it's handicapped without a structure to wrap around, can be shaky if you touch it to change camera settings (if you are depending on merging a bunch of photos, don't touch the camera in between exposures).

I wanted a sturdier version of the smaller JOBY gorilla pod for setting up a smaller DSLR that does time lapses. It needed to fit in small spaces and also versatile in the sense that it could wrap around a railing, tree branch etc. I bought a separate ball head and this tripod has proven itself in a number of scenarios both underwater and terrestrial. The cups haven't lost any of its grip and you can adapt them to many many shapes. I rinsed the tripod very well after use in water, especially in salt water and it has not rusted. Very happy with the product even over time and many uses.
