OK for a back-up booster seat
The First Years On-The-Go Booster Seat,Safari is an OK, budget friendly, portable booster seat. We already have a booster seat from Fisher Price, but my husband insisted we purchase something more portable for our various international trips. After using the products for some time now, here are my thoughts:Portability – 5/5 StarsThe booster seat is lighter, more compact, and, hence, definitely more portable than our Fisher Price booster seat. It folds into a nice compact shape (12" X 2.25" X 11") that we can either carry like a bag or put in our luggage without taking up much space.Ease of use – 3/5 StarsIt's pretty easy to set up, yes; it self inflates in a couple of minutes (the direction says it may take a bit longer if it's the first time), and all you're supposed to do is attach two buckle straps around the seat cushion and back post. I had trouble getting the straps to stay tight enough. I don't know if it's the fabric as it seems pretty shiny and slick or if the loops on the buckle is too loose, but when my little one would move or wiggle slightly, it would loosen up the slack. I did not have this problem with our other booster chair. We found a solution by tying a knot, but I imagine this defeats the purpose of having the convenience of a chair that you can quickly and easily adjust to whatever chair you're using.Furthermore, I found that the chair had a slight design flaw. The Velcro hook (the rough part) strip is located at the bottom of the booster seat, so you can't place the seat on top of most chair that has a fabric cushion or cover without ruining the fabric.Ease of cleaning – 2/5 StarsThe chair is made out of a fabric material that is easy to wipe and clean when it comes to tiny messes: a dropped chuck here and there. But I'd imagine something like tomato sauce would stain the fabric if you weren't able to clean it up right away. The instruction manual states that you should clean the chair with a damp cloth or sponge using mild liquid soap (and to never soak the product in water), which you don't always have readily available when you're eating out, for example. I also think that the crevices of the chair is a magnet for crumbs, but a good vacuuming and shake should take out dry crumbs...wet, squished chunks of food is another story...Safety - 2/5 StarsThe instruction manual states that babies from 9 months up can use the chair, but I really wouldn't recommend this if your baby cannot sit up straight by him/herself yet. The chair offers little support and a baby who cannot sit up straight would definitely slump. Moreover, as the chair is flimsy with no side support, I also would not recommend this chair to a very wiggly child. As mentioned above, we had issues with the safety strap loosening when our little one would wiggle. LO is 18 MO and, in general, pretty good with sitting in his chair nicely still while eating, but I still would not leave him in the chair even to get something across the room. If he wanted to pick up something he dropped on the floor, for example, I don't think the waist straps has enough hold to keep him on the booster seat.Quality - 4/5 StarsConsidering the price, I wasn't expecting something super fantastic, but I was hoping the buckle straps would be better. Otherwise, the quality is what I expect of this type of booster seat: it's portable, lightweight, but you sacrifice a bit of the safety and ease of use.In summary:This is an OK booster seat, especially for the price, just don't expect the booster seat to be a replacement for a high chair or to be used as your second high chair/booster seat (which we are doing with our Fisher Price booster seat at home). We are keeping this seat for our international travels and as a back-up/temporary solution for visits to places that don't have a high chair. Personally, I still prefer to use the high chairs provided by restaurants (unless, of course, if it's really dirty and gross).
