This isn't as good a solution as the traditional, expected, normal SD card slot that kept your SD card or adapter safely encased within the computer, but, thanks to the incredibly dumb design of these Windows 10 laptops, the new normal sucks. The Rocketek solves the problem of trying to keep track of and protect your SD card: no, it's not with your keys or the tissue lint in your pocket; no, it's not on the floor of a Starbucks where you were catching up on paperwork. It's right there in the Rockettek, which is a kind of SD card safe as well as a reader.
So far--around a month--the Rocketeks I've bought for a couple of laptops have been working fine. The data transfer speeds seem normal to me, a non-expert computer user. And I don't have to worry that each laptop's SD card or adapter has fallen out of the depth-challenged SD slot. I know where my SD card is: it's enclosed in the Rocketek I put it in. And the personal, proprietary, financial, and software files copied to my SD card aren't gonna fall out of the inadequate laptop SD card slot and into the hands of identity thieves or be damp-mopped across a coffee shop floor along with empty sugar packets and dumped into the garbage.
What goes in the Rocketek stays in the Rocketek. And that's one less thing to worry about. Will update this if the Rocketek is short-lived or unreliable.
I'm wondering: can we get some kind of computer consumer rights going here? Or do we just pay for stuff we don't get because we're being sold stuff that isn't accurately described? How about complaining to the Federal Trade Commission, which is, I believe, the agency charged with ensuring the rights of consumers not to be cheated by businesses? Computer companies represented that certain laptops have SD slots, which have traditionally been defined as slots of sufficient depth to enclose an SD card or adapter flush with the computer. The manufacturers redefined the term SD slot without telling consumers about the revised specs and the resulting lack of protection for the SD card. Why aren't the computer manufacturers held accountable for misrepresentations? Why didn't the computer manufacturers either use the reduced space for a micro sd card that would be flush with the computer as is the case with tablets (check out your Kindle Fire, for example), or reach out to peripherals manufacturers to produce a reduced-size SD card or SD adapter that would fit in the reduced SD slot? That way, the end user--the computer buyer--would have a fully functional setup. But, no, that's not what happened. It seems to me we've been sold misrepresented products. How legal is that? The manufacturers' specs on the Amazon pages I read didn't note the change in the SD slot. And as of some weeks ago I don't believe there were any micro SD card adapters manufactured to fit the shortened SD slots in laptops produced by Asus and Lenovo and maybe by any other company that may have used a similar shortened SD slot design. Before I recently bought a Lenovo and then an Asus, I called the companies to ask what SD card would fit in the computers' respective SD slots. I wasn't told the truth. Likely the companies' reps didn't have the correct information. How is that acceptable marketplace ethics?
If you feel you've been sold a misrepresented product, you can call the FTC by getting its number from its website and inquire about its complaint policy. If there are sufficient complaints, then the FTC apparently will look into the matter. From my point of view, the goal is to ensure that computer companies can't pull marketing "surprises" such as unmentioned one-sided redefining of a commonly and historically understood term (SD slot), leaving the purchasers to deal with the problems engendered by new specs for peripherals that don't exist. It seems to me that the companies caused this mess by their decisions and lack of disclosure to consumers. Why shouldn't these companies then be held responsible for their actions--apparently pursuing sales without fully disclosing the specifications of what is being sold?
It's a bit bulky for a card reader, but I'm not going to say that's a negative, since part of the benefit of this one is being able to store a card inside it, so it necessarily has to be large compared to others that load the card sticking out the side, for example. But the size might be an issue for some people, as USB ports are occasionally spaced kind of tight, so I could see situations where one might have difficulty inserting it properly.
However, I got this one because it had three extra features I liked, but it fails at two of them.
* Card cover - this is great. In fact exceeds expectations. You put the card in, the cover snaps shut, and because of the way the catch is designed, you can't easily pull it open just by hinging it out the same way...you have to squeeze the sides of it and pull it open. I'm making this sound more complicated than it's worth -- my point is, it's very easy to intentionally open the cover, but very difficult to accidentally open it. This will be excellent for dropping this in my pocket or bag and not worrying about losing the card.
* Activity light - very faint. I could barely tell it was on. It was slightly improved when I peeled back the sticker cover and found there was some crud inside the socket that was blocking the light, so I pulled that out and replaced the sticker...better, but still pretty faint in direct light.
* Rotating cover -- the bit you can rotate around to protect the USB connector -- is so loose as to be pointless. It has little points in the plastic meant to be stops, but there's not enough force to hold the cover there. It won't protect it at all in a pocket or bag, it'll just slide right off. I'm just going to remove it.
Still, it works as a USB reader, so. I would've given it three stars because the other bits are kind of misleadingly useless, but given it's cheap and I will really appreciate the card cover, I'll bump it up to 4.
