Customers like the sound quality of the microphone. For example, they say it picks up sound for long distances very clearly, and it rejects noise much better from behind. I love senmheiser mics, because of three main things:
- Made out of metal housing (not cheap plastic)
- Made in Germany (Not China)
- Sound quality is always superior
What is special about this mic is its size. If you have a semi-profecional camera like mine (canon vixia) the need for a small lite weight mic is essential. Sound quality is great and reduces unnecessary noise from room echo and outdoor wind.
The only thing I found wrong was not the mic itself but my camera. My camera has a mini advanced shoe and not a universal hot shoe like this mic. I had to buy an adapter for less than $15. No Bigy!
Great Quality,
Great Price,
Great Mic!
The plug on the mic sends a signal to both the left and right channels. It's not stereo, but at least you won't get only one speaker playing on playback.
The settings I use on it with my camera are the front switch on "+" and the back switch all the way forward (i.e., not the setting for cutting down on wind noise - get a furry cover for that instead if you need that capability).
On the Canon EOS-M, I found it useful to hit the info button to go to the screen that shows the current settings on the camera, and then pull up the audio display so that I could see the input level. If for some reason that's being pegged, then you'd want the "-" position on the front switch. It's also good for verifying that the mic is powered on and is working.
What could be better is telling whether it is on or off. The LED on the side only blinks when you turn it on. It doesn't stay on. That's annoying.
I've posted a couple of pictures so you can get a sense of the size of the mic mounted on the Canon EOS-M. On Christmas morning, I actually had the EOS-M to EF/S adapter with the EF-S 10-22 mm mounted on the camera and put that on a tripod. That combo worked beautifully for indoor video for capturing the whole room so that I could then walk around and take pictures with my other camera.

I also own a Canon shotgun that is hot-shoe connected, and while the Canon is more convenient, the Sennheiser has better sound. I love that it has an low-cut filter switch to reduce wind noise. As with any mic, you must get the dead cat for it if you are going to be in ANY wind. I also love that it has a high-sensitivity setting for very quiet environments.
I highly recommend this mic, but make sure you handle it gently.
I understand that electronics fail over time nothing is everlasting, but the lack of an adequate and reasonable repair service is important for the trust of a brand and product and determines future purchases of the same brands.

However this is not as good as say the RODE NT mic series which provide better directional balance and give a slightly more natural tone. I use an RODE NT2 which does sound better than this.. but its 3 times the size!
