Night Shifts Black (The Hold Me NSB Series Book 1) Kindle Edition
His name is Luke. But nobody knows that. He was an iconic musician before he gave up music. But nobody knows that either. They also don’t know he’s twenty-seven, that he used to have an infectious laugh, and he’s way too young to be widowed. They certainly don’t know the rest of his tragic story.
All they know is that he comes into their café at the same time every morning and stares at the same chair at the same table. They know he’s strange. They know he interrupts their breakfast with a cold blast of air as he hovers in the doorway, mustering the courage to confront a piece of furniture. No one asks why. No one cares. He’s fine with that. He’s done with life. This isn’t even his story anymore.
It’s actually mine. I'm Callie Roland, the young writer who sat in his chair one day.
Please note that this book addresses depression, anxiety, and suicide in a compassionate, realistic manner. For a full list of content notices please visit my website. Night Shifts Black can be read as a standalone, but the story continues in Tracing Holland.

About the authors
Aly is a writer, musician, and terrible cook. She loves cats, hates selfies, holds a blackbelt in Kyokushin karate, and watches every documentary she can find. Her books (and music) stretch genres and feature emotional, angsty themes with gripping storylines that bring all the feels. The only things she enjoys more than shredding hearts is stitching them back together and creating vivid, complex characters you can’t let go.
Her novels have been nominated for an RT Reviewer’s Choice award, received a number of Amazon category bestseller rankings, and have been praised by some of the leading authors in the romance industry. The care and compassion with which she handles difficult subjects like mental illness and suicide has also been recognized by mental health advocates and actively promoted by multiple survivors and organizations.
No matter the genre or trope, Aly’s goal is always the same: to write with earnest passion from her soul to yours.
Aly is represented by SBR Media. For inquiries regarding foreign rights, audio, and other media outlets, please contact Katie Monson at SBR Media.
I’m a writer, musician, and cat lover. I also have an alternative music obsession. Seriously, it's a real problem.
I write what needs to come out, whether it’s pain, tears, or laughter. I write people and relationships, about the beauty and horror of what we do to ourselves and each other. I write Love. Vengeance. Compassion. Cruelty. Trust. Betrayal. Forgiveness. Darkness, and the incredible way humans destroy and heal each other.
I like to eradicate barriers, refusing to be confined by the laws of physics or limitations of reality. I will befriend a vast population of possibilities and introduce them in ways that might surprise you.

Night Shifts Black is also a story of self-acceptance and redemption. It is the story of a young woman and her battle to move on from trauma that has left her life in a truly grey place. Her chance encounter with the aforementioned rock star it an unforgettable experience for all involved.
As a reader, I have not found a more accurate, compassionate, and moving portrayal of the devastation depression causes. The exquisite details and the carefully worded prose of Aly Stiles bring an understanding to this issue that I never expected. This author has truly opened my eyes and changed the way I look at the actions of others and the state of their mental health. It is worth every second spent between the covers to absorb the moving artisty and passion brought to life by this truly talented author.
Callie Roland is a young writer, who spends a few days a week enjoying tea at a small diner. Until one day, it is interrupted by someone asking for her chair- despite their being a near empty diner full of chairs- he wants her chair specifically.
And that moment in time sets Callie's mind spinning. Who was that strange man? What does he see in that chair? And why did he look so sad?
She is fascinated by him and their one brief encounter. Their encounter that changes the course of both of their lives. Especially since he's drawn into the fact that she doesn't recognize him.
She starts piecing the puzzle together. Luke. Twenty-seven. Widowed. And haunted by the ghost of that chair.
Soon their breakfasts become some what of an odd routine. And they become some what friends. And then she learns he is Luke. Frontman of the band Night Shifts Black. A musician who gave up music. Walked away from it all. Ready to end it all. Until a chance encounter because of a chair.
So, what do I even say about this book? This isn't your typical rockstar romance. - it's raw, and gritty, and packed with emotion. It touches on loss, on grief, anxiety, depression, and suicide. It was real. It starts with an unlikely friendship, between two people over a chair, and ends in a near instant romance when Luke introduces Callie to a friend and band member Casey.
I loved every second of this book, and stayed up waaay too late to finish it. And I cannot wait to continue the series, and see what happens next & where it takes me. 4.5 ⭐ out of 5 ⭐.
This is a book that I have to also own a hard copy of as well. It needs to be proudly displayed on my bookshelf amongst many others that have touched me in one way or another.
This book is about friendship, love, strength, hope, and perseverance amongst despair, darkness, and turmoil. Luke finds a friend and a savior in Callie, a complete stranger who was in exactly the right place at the right time, allowing for their lives to come together and become intertwined in the absolute best way possible. Through their friendship, Callie meets Casey. Casey is Luke's best friend and practically brother who has been struggling to help pull Luke out of his personal hell but had been unsuccessful. The dynamic between Luke, Callie, and Casey was incredible. It was beautiful and moving.
This book had a perfect mix of the personal stories of each of the three main characters, as well as the music portion of things with Night Shifts Black, Luke and Casey's band that Luke walked away from.
I don't want to give anything away, so I won't go into much more detail. This book is not one to pass up. It is wonderful. I've never heard of this author prior to Night Shifts Black, but I will definitely keep a look out for more. This was well written and I enjoyed the writing style immensely.
Overall, this book was more than 5 stars for me so I'm placing it with my 6+ star books. And the fact that I'm rating a book with no sex this highly is a definite testament to the strength of the book and the writing. Well done, Alyson Santos, well done.

Night Shifts Black is the first of Aly Stiles books I’ve read and definitely won’t be the last.
We get an up close and personal look at some dark depression, trigger warnings for those who have ever experienced the darkness and suicidal thoughts. This book has been written with care to detail showing the journey of Luke and the task Callie and then Casey has with him.
It’s a breathtakingly fascinating read with many trials and tribulations of being in close contact with someone dealing with death, grief, depression and guilt.
It’s almost a HEA as Luke still has a long way to go……but it’s a start.
This is the first in the series and I can’t wait to see how this is all going to turn out.
The author’s eloquence about depression is beautifully descriptive in its heart wrenching pain. The poems are utter perfection.
This is the first time reading this author and I’m beyond impressed.
It is difficult to tell you more about the book without spoiling the content. It unfolds its layers while reading it page by page and I guess that's part of the charm. The topic of the book itself is a serious one and I like how the author tries to bring awareness to this.
I laughed, I cried and I had goosebumps along the way. Another highlight on my 2016 reading list!
