Great Gadget!
5 Stars
Great Gadget!
Not faulting the item, my 78 year-old eyes couldn't handle the small print/graphics instructions so I scanned/enlarged/printed out a large readable copy that I went over numerous times while inspecting the parts. Programming the computer took the usual couple of start-overs getting the hang of which and what button to push. I then carefully mounted everything to the bike double-checking each step, spun the wheel to insure a reading, then out for a ride to confirm proper contact before the final tightening and snipping of the plastic ties. Voila! It's a 5 Star Winner! Visual reading is just fine for my tired old eyes and I really appreciate that there are NO buttons to push when changing functions; just ightly "tap down" on the base! One reviewer claimed that the unit "popped out" of it's bracket very easily. When I inserted mine I had to use considerble FORCE before hearing the audible "click" so I'm thinking he probably didn't do likewise and it hadn't seated properly. Over my previous wired units, this is a giant improvement. As usual, I bought through Amazon.com using my Amazon Visa that gives me the fastest shipping at no charge and a secure return policy if needed. Is there more?

Great little computer-- easy to set up and program, and it works well. You can set it up for miles or kilometers. The display is large and easy to read, and it stops taking data when your bike is motionless. It tracks average speed, max speed, ride duration, and it has a clock and odometer. Also, as far as I can tell, it is pretty water resistant. I have used it for a few hundred miles and it is great.

The directions the computer come with instruct you to place the sensor pointing towards the back of the bike when you install it on the fork. However, I recommend you place it such that it faces forward (see pic)-- in case the sensor moves and gets caught in your spokes, your wheel will spit it out as your ride forwards, instead of having the sensor get "sucked in" by your wheel. I feel this installation method is safer.

Ok....this little gizmo took a bit of finagling to get accurate and to program, but once I figured it out, it is VERY accurate. I checked it against my RunKeeper GPS phone app and it is near perfect, right down to the tenth of a mile.

I've only ever used wired bike computers (Vetta), so I found the attachment of the sensor to the fork super easy, and the placement of the magnet equally easy. No wires to run all over! I put mine on left fork (just personal preference), with the writing facing in. You'll see a little indentation in the upper, right-hand corner of the face of the sensor that is the zone you need to line up to the magnet, so get within 5mm of that, the closer the better, and you should be good. The counter with its strap is also very easy to attach. Just make sure to follow the directions, making the counter flat on your handlebars, not tilted toward you. For it to work right, it needs to be parallel to the magnet.

My only issues came because of the tire size recommendations. I have a Haro Del Sol Lxi 7.1, with 700cX40mm tires. They also have an ETRTO (European Tire and Rim Technical Organization) code on them, which is 42-622. According to the table supplied by CatEye, that combination of ETRTO and my tire size isn't possible. lol But it's what I have.

Sooo....I called Haro and asked them what number to use. They said skip the ETRTO code and use the actual tire size. I tried the 2200 that CatEye recommends, but that was a bit off. So, I tried a smidge below that to adjust, 2190, and that was perfect. My point to all this is that your "fitting" may require a little trial and error.

I was going to take one star off because the buttons on the back, especially the reset and mode buttons, are painfully tiny and hard to press while looking at the face of the counter, and programming is not too intuitive. BUT, it's a tiny device that has to do a lot of functions, so I'm letting all that slide. :)

I found the CatEye QuickStart site that was MUCH more helpful than the paper instructions in the box. Amazon won't let me post outside URLs, so just Google CatEye Strada Quickstart.

Plus a really helpful tutorial from Ivan's Bikes on YouTube.

The Cateye Strada Wireless has performed flawlessly for our 4-per-week bike rides. Simple to reset (just hold the button down for a few seconds), easy to read, and easy to remove, I highly recommend this computer for bike enthusiasts who ride for fun, whether fast or slow. For those who are training for maximum improvement or for competition, you'll want to purchase a unit with cadence, and maybe even a heart-rate function. But if you only log in miles and speed, the Strada is great choice. And wireless is so convenient to install, with no ugly wires ruining the bike graphics. I've never had an issue with losing signal. The instructions say not to park the bike with the magnet next to the pickup unit, or else your battery may drain rapidly; so you do need to spend 5 extra seconds to rotate your front tire when parking the bike. But I've logged a few thousand miles on all of my Cateye products before needing to change the battery.
I also own Cateye's V2c model, because I analyze my training regularly, and I rely upon cadence data as well as average speed. But I paid more for this feature, and the V2c graphics are smaller and a little harder for me to read.
As far as longevity, I have another Cateye computer on a vintage 12-speed; I've had to replace the battery several times, but the unit performs just as it did when I installed it 25 years ago. This is the reason I trust Cateye; although a company product's reliability may change over the years, usually the change is for the better. Until I have issues with their products, I will continue to buy from Cateye, as long as the features are competitive with other brands.

Great device -- small, unobtrusive but easy to read, accurate, with straightforward set-up and great usability. Programming to your wheel circumference is very simple with instructions included in a number of languages. This device is extremely accurate compared against GPS mileage driven over the same routes. The distance results are also very reproducible -- within .02 miles over a 10 mile course -- and this .02 difference was likely real depending on how tight I took corners or rode tangents. The mix of functions is fine for me, a recreational rode bike rider. I generally ride alone, and I am now challenged to beat my last ride time and speed on the various courses I ride. I like to watch the instantaneous speed and set the lower function to show distance traveled. It knows when you stop and turns off the calculations until you start again. One minor caution -- the unit should snap into the mount. it can slip in without snapping into place and is at risk of sliding out, as mine did when I hit a series of shallow potholes at 24 mph downhill. Once snapped into place it will not pop out until/unless you elect to take it out when the bike is not in use.

3.0 out of 5 stars This is not really for static turbo sessions - there ...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 13, 2014
This is not really for static turbo sessions - there are a number of pieces - the readout part which should go on the handlebars, the spoke cadence measuring ball and the wifi reader to count the distance travelled and pass it to the readout. Trouble is, on a static turbo machine, it's your rear wheel that goes round (the front wheel is sitting in a riser block with no movement) and it's the rear wheel travel that needs to be measured when you use a turbo machine. Sadly the distance between the wifi block on the rear wheel frame and the readout on the handlebars is too far to give a readout!!! So I had to compromise and put the readout part on its mounting pad on my crossbar. Sideways. Then it kind of works. I am also having trouble actually finding out how to measure the cadence in terms of revolutions per minute. My training plans ask me to cycle at 80 - 100 + rpm - but I can only find distance travelled, speed and effort output. Not how many times the wheel is turning over the space of a minute...if someone in the know who has one of these can tell me where to find it, then it will make four stars!
