Product Description
Introducing the NextFit Zip Convertible Car Seat from Chicco, the makers of the #1-rated KeyFit! Engineered with innovative safety and convenience features, the NextFit is the easiest convertible car seat to install accurately and securely. The exclusive ReclineSure 9-position Leveling System provides the most recline options to accommodate a wider range of vehicles, and the SuperCinch LATCH tightener uses force-multiplying technology to help achieve a SUPER tight and secure vehicle fit with a fraction of the effort! Just like the KeyFit, two RideRight bubble levels accurately indicate correct seat angle in both rear-facing and forward-facing modes. And, when you're ready to move to forward-facing, an integrated slide path makes it easy to re-position the LATCH strap without re-threading! NextFit Zip's exclusive Zip & Wash seat pad detaches easily from shell for convenient machine washing. NextFit Zip also features ComfortFlex Harness Management with padding and flex-out technology that holds both sides of the waistbelt up and out of the way during loading/unloading and keeps them in the right spot once baby is ready to be buckled! Other features include a removable infant insert for smaller babies, 5-point harness with 2-position chest clip, 6-position headrest with integrated harness adjustment, built-in belt lock-offs for installation with vehicle belt, machine-washable seat pad, and insulated cup holder for use on either side of the seat. For use with children from 5-40 lbs in rear-facing mode, and from 22-65 lbs in forward-facing mode.

(And yes, my husband sold his car and bought a larger one purely to keep our little girl in rear-facing seats longer. Safety engineers are just like that.)
It came with a soft insert for very tiny babies, and based on the little doll we got our daughter that's exactly the size she was when she came home from the NICU, this would even be a fine choice for preemies. I especially love the adjustable recline feature. We can adjust the seat to a more relaxed position when the road trip is getting long, so our baby sleeps, and she quite likes it when we sit her more upright to look at things. I think her favorite features are the padded straps (no more pinches or red marks!) and the insulated cupholder. Mine is the crash-test rating and the zip-out liner, as well as the easy-to-clean fabric. And my husband loves how easy the straps are to adjust. It's so intuitive, even grandparents who remember late-1980s seats and bachelor uncles who wouldn't know a safety seat if Danica Patrick were inside can get a toddler strapped in safely. The dual-position chest clip is especially well designed.
It's pricy, sure, and it's a big seat, but if you can afford to give your baby the best (or have generous, safety-obsessed relatives watching your registry like hawks,) this is definitely the seat to buy. It is safety engineer dad tested and cuddly NICU-graduate toddler approved!
UPDATE: We flew on a (Southwest) 737 airplane and nervously decided to bring this car seat along for our child to use in flight. We couldn't find any useful info online, or even calling airline, regarding whether this would fit on the plane. We couldn't even get decent advice from friends because most people gate check these bulky seats. Or they purchase a lighter weight car seat. Rear facing, we could just fit this in her seat on her normal reclining angle (the most upright recommended for rear facing or perhaps one click less upright from there). Forward facing would have been fine.
We actually sat this car seat in our BOB revolution flex stroller and used the safety straps that came with the BOB/Chicco keyfit 30 adapter bracket. You could easily secure the car seat with a bungee cord if you didn't have those straps. Our child was able to ride in the car seat on the stroller in the airport and then we just gate checked the stroller. It was a pretty easy setup, given how heavy and bulky the car seat is. I am glad I didn't waste money and time buying a second, lighter convertible seat and I'm glad we tried this out. I wish we had known how easy it would have been. It should be noted that I am sure this would be a very tight - if not impossible - fit on a very small plane. But it would probably work forward facing in a pinch.
