From the Manufacturer
The PF-2 is for use with Black Berkey Purifiers - If you use ceramic filters, you will need the PF-4 *** PF-2 reduction elements are designed for use in conjunction with Black Berkey water purification elements to adsorb the following unwanted elements found in drinking water. Fluoride, Arsenic V and pre oxidized Arsenic III, Other residual heavy metal ions. FLUORIDE: Testing for fluoride was based on 20-30ppm of the ion in the influent aqueous solution at a flow rate of no more than 3 gpm per cubic foot of media. Results of <1ppm of the fluoride ion in the effluent were typical for the media (>95% reduction). Under optimum conditions, effluent concentrations of less than 50 ppb were readily achieved (>99.75% reduction). ARSENIC: This product uniquely targets the entire family of arsenic oxide anions as well as the arsenic cations. REPLACEMENT: Under normal conditions it is recommended that each set of two PF-2 elements be replaced after 1,000 gallons.

There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
The filter setup is cumbersome and must be followed very carefully. Because of so many recent negative reviews for Berkey as a whole, I actually ended up trying another water filter instead of buying replacement PF-2 filters. However, that ended up being a failed experiment, so I proceeded to order the replacement PF-2 filters. I purged the fluoride filters for total of 6 minutes each (2 minutes x3 changing the flow direction) instead of the recommended 20 seconds x2 past water running clear (using a strong thumb pressure on top of the faucet against the purging button for complete water seal with water spraying everywhere occasionally!), and made sure to turn the filters exactly 8 full revolutions. There was some resistance to tightening at 6 1/2 revolutions, so I was actually afraid of puncturing the internal filter media screen while following the install instruction for the full 8 turns because the Berkey rep pointed out that's causative to many reported problems. I may have been overzealous in my purging effort, but my PF-2 filtered water tested at 59 ppm for TDS and the water stayed absolutely clear. Without the PF-2 filters installed (double filtered with Filtrete Maximum), the Berkey water tests at 79 ppm.
Berkey really should've improved the filter design to make it more fool-proof since its introduction a long years ago. Also, many reports of the main black filter manufacturing defects (forums & reviews) should prompt you to run a red dye (must be non-organic) test as soon as you receive your system so that you may return/exchange a defective element. If the black elements are not functioning properly, it'll drastically shorten the PF-2 filters service duration.
When I initially contacted Berkey with my concerns over many of the critical reviews, including one in particular which stated that PF-2 removes flourosilicates only, the Berkey agent disagreed and shared a recent lab result done on 2/18/2018 by an NELAC ISO accredited lab.

Your water PH level should be between 5-7 (closer to 5 the better, my PH is near 7), or the efficiency of the media will decline. Berkey also states that the PF-2 media will remove any types of inorganic fluoride salts soluble in water(sodium fluoride, sodicum fluorosilicate & calcium fluoride) along with fluorosilicic acid (aka hydro-fluosilicic acid). It also removes arsenic V and pre-oxidized arsenic III along with other residual heavy metal ions.
There are many reviews concerning aluminum detection/suspension, but Berkey uses aluminum oxide (Al2O3) which is a safe non-toxic bio-compatible ceramic (corundum as in rubies and sapphires), different from the toxic aluminum metal. Lab testing can result in a false positive by counting the separated pure aluminum ion from the oxygen component. The use of activated alumina is one of three EPA and WQA recommended methods for removing fluoride, the other two being Bone char carbon (cheaper and not as effective) and reverse osmosis. Appropriated purged, installed, and maintained PF-2 filters most likely will not result in cloudy particulate in filtered water unless due to unexpected manufacturing defect. Be sure to order yours from a trusted reseller source to avoid counterfeit/used filters. The water temperature rises during the activation so you should definitely notice warm cloudy water during the initial filter purging procedure.
I am taking a star off for the aforementioned issues and for the persistent deficit in manufacturing design improvement endeavors along with the specific PH requirements. However, I can't find as effective competing gravity-fed system that filters above 97.* % of fluoride short of going full-on reverse osmosis or steam distillation that strip water of beneficial trace minerals unless using re-mineralization for taste and health. I will monitor the TDS level steadily to track the reduction of its efficiency throughout the use duration; after just 20 gallons refill, the TDS went up 10 ppm, so I will reverse-flow flush the PF-2 element continually during monthly chamber maintenance.
Berkey water makes the best coffee.
1) I'm all worked up about my drinking water but it is ok for it to soak non stop in plastic?
2) the last two times I've cleaned out my Berkey, the pf2 filters had a bright yellow stain leaking from the units, both of them. Like lemon pie yellow. Like a bright yellow fluid seeped out of it. I called Berkey and they claimed they had never heard of it. It rubs off if you scrub the exterior of the filters. I was worried so I purchased another set of pf2 filters. Checked again....bright yellow leaking out of the unit in long stripes. Seriously? Also, the filtering media was sifted out into my drinking water and was collected at the bottom. Called Berkey. The plastic like white pellet shavings at the bottom of your clean water Cannister? No, fear. That is just manufacturing dust, totally insert, very safe. IN MY DRINKING WATER? I'm paying money every year to filter minute amounts of stuff from my water and I'm supposed to be all chill about manufacturing dust soaking in my drinking water? Apparently, the priming they recommend isn't good enough. You have to swish water and shake cannister for five minutes holding fingers at either end, then prime right side up, then prime upside down, then right side up. Or the screen holding the media in might be damaged and leaking the media out. !!??! Which is activated allumina whatever that is (apparently not same as aluminum?)
3) I learned that activated alumina they use to filter fluoride only filters naturally occurring fluoride. Not all the other garbage fluorides we have in our water as well. And yes you will see 99.9 percent removed on their lab report, but if you call the envirotek lab, they only test for naturally occurring fluoride. So "fluoride" isn't all fluoride it seems.
Tired of this nonsense, I researched more filters and came across aquacera filters. They seem to have pretty good filtration percentages including glyphosates. I don't think theirs does virus removal but honestly, I'm not camping in the jungle and my city water is vigorously potable (hello heavy chlorine) so I'm not going to worry. Theirs removes fluoride all in one candle with nothing hanging into your clean water. And the fluoride it does filter is all categories of fluoride not just naturally occurring.
It also doesn't require ridiculous priming charades. Instructions come with it. Also, expect to change your filter at reasonable intervals, maybe once a year, not the five that Berkey told me I was good for. Not only did my filter and rubber seals smell moldy after 18 months, I'm wondering how good it was even filtering by then. A filter is a sponge and when it fills up, it's filtering capacities decrease slowly. Berkey told me to soak the rubber rings for at least an hour in fifty fifty vinegar solution snd boil for 5 minutes. Didn't even make a difference. They said the musty odor of my carbon candles would be corrected by adding sixteen drops of bleach to my water and letting it filter thru. I shouldn't have to bleach my candles.
So far I'm pleased with these aquacera filters and the water tastes different. Not in a bad way. It tastes a little more like reverse osmosis water (my inlaws have one). Berkey tasted fresh as well but had a sweet aftertaste (not unpleasant).
I bought two imperial aquacera cerametix 7" ones directly from the aquacera company website and they arrived quickly.
I have zero affiliation or connection with either Berkey or aquacera. I want hassle free clean drinking water. Also, I'm not getting a suspect product where I have to pay nearly $80 a year to filter fluoride out, and I'm not happy at all with the quality and twice in a row, loses my trust.
