Both Amplifi and Orbi are Mesh Network routers and designed to extend the Wi-Fi coverage throughout your home or office.
Orbi is a little more expensive than Amplifi and doesn't offer the same range of WAP and Satellites. Amplifi gives you the option to connect to several Wireless or Hardwired Access Points from Ubiquiti so you can customize your network configuration a little more than with Orbi, especially if you intend to Hardwire your access points. Orbi is primarily a wireless only Mesh Network.
Amplifi Router:
The design and build quality of the Amplfi router is excellent and very Apple like looking. The router is basically a 4 x 4 inch cube with LCD illuminated base and Aluminum bezel trimmed LCD Touchscreen on the front. On the back you'll find 4 gigabit ethernet ports, a RJ45 WAN port and USB port. Currently the USB port is non functional so you won't be able to plug in a USB hard drive and use it as a NAS.
Three Best Features:
1 - LCD Touch Screen
2 - Easy Setup Via Amplifi App
3 - Auto Updates.
4 - Band Hopping
LCD Touch Screen: The feature I use most often on this router is the front LCD Screen. It can display a myriad of information including IP address, Port Info, Time Clock and Network Speed. My router is located on my desktop behind my computer screen and I constantly glance and monitor my network speed throughout the day. The LCD has a sleep mode and will shut off automatically at night and then re-illuminate in the morning.
App: Like many routers today the Amplifi router is installed and configured using an app. Configuration is very fast and easy even for those with little or no network experience.
Updates: When's the last time you upgraded the firmware on your router? Perhaps the BEST feature on the Amplifi router is the Automatic Firmware notices and 1 Button Upgrade. When a new firmware becomes available and update is automatically Pushed to the Amplifi router and then a message is displayed on the front screen telling you there is an update. A simple press of the front LCD Screen and the new firmware is loaded and the router reboots - it's that simple and that easy. No admin or configuration pages to log into just a message on the router LCD screen and the push of a button. This feature alone makes the amplifi one of the best routers because it will keep you more secure and up to date with security and performance upgrades.
Band Hopping: One more thing amplifi does very well is BAND HOPPING swtiching between 2G and 5G bands and WAP seamlessly no matter were you are the router will adjust the band and WAP location to provide you with optimum performance. No jumping networks the transition is smooth.
Summary:
My home is a 2 story, 2100 sq ft house. I started with a single Amplifi router and it all by itself was powerful enough to provide good coverage throughout my home. I did install a second outdoor WAP to give me better coverage outside. My Ubiquiti outdoor WAP is powerful enough that I can get good Wi-Fi signal in my neighbours house 3 doors down.
Overall this is a great router for most average users. Enterprise users may want more configuration and customization tools but for most home owners and Small Businesses this router is all you'll need. I've been using my amplifi for over a year now and it's been rock solid.
Highly Recommend

The phone app that is available for download through the Play Store or App store is both incredibly user-friendly and includes various ways to control and prioritize all of your home devices all at the comfort of your phone.
There are 3 "Profiles" you can use to have the router optimize your internet: Gaming, Streaming, and Normal.
Through the app you can set each device to have speeds shifted in accordance to the profile you've set, so for example, in my household, I've set my PS4 to "Gaming", and my Chromecast TV to "Streaming". Everything else I have, such as the Google Home, is set to Normal by default.
Another nice feature is how the router automatically decides which wifi band to use for each device, 5ghz or 2.4ghz. You can manually decide what devices can operate on which band but I'd leave it up to the router.
Guest networks are a breeze to use as well, you can easily select the limit to how many users can be active at once and easily switch it on/off whenever.
Now, for a parent who wants to make sure their kids are not staying up late on their video games, this router is for you. Through the app, you can control who has access to internet and even set a schedule for when they can have access to internet. You can press pause on any device listed and internet access on that device will be cut off until you can decide otherwise. Ultimate control there.
A builtin speed test in the app is also available and very convenient for regular tests to make sure you're getting what your paying for in terms of speed provided by your service provider.
Lastly the looks. This thing is beautiful and very "Apple" in terms of the design and boxing. the material is a very smooth white matte finish all around with a nice bright LCD display on the front with a brightness control through the app. At the base of the router is an LED light that runs around the bottom edge and can be dimmed or turned off through the app.
Price is along the high, but this is a router unlike any other router. Its a router that doesn't look like a router, it's a piece of art.

I was convinced my home was built over an Indian burial ground. The native American's hated networks and WiFi. I had literally been through six routers in two years. After reading 100's of router reviews I'd take a chance and purchase a new router. Always high-end equipment. I was positive Amazon would refuse to sell me any more routers because I returned so many. Thank you Amazon for understanding my plight.
Gave up on Netgear because (3) of my routers either ran 10x slower, dropped connections, or flat out failed following firmware updates. Lost a R7000, R8000, and XR500. I never plan on buying another Netgear router. I truly believe Netgear pushes out new firmware to break your router so you will need to replace it. Had been running DD-WRT on a XR500 (DumaOS is a sick joke) but it was a hack DD-WRT so router limped along still requiring daily reboots.
Next tried (3) TP-Link routers (AC5400, C5400x). GUI would hang, would not give out new IP's. 2.4GHz radio would randomly shut off throughout the day. 2-3 reboots per day. No thanks.
Next Synology RT2600AC. All good except hardwired Ethernet ports kept dropping my VOIP every 10-30 seconds. Support offered no help even though I sent in all logs and reports showing VOIP coming and going. RJ45 ports unusable.
Next ASUS GT-AC11000. 2.4GHz radio would cut out every 2-3 minutes. Clients would not stay connected and some would not connect at all. Sent it back.
Okay, another month of research and decided on the Amplifi HD. A mesh for me? Had I lost my mind? I was that desperate. And for all those online videos where people gush over the physical design and even how nice the cardboard packaging box is... ugh. I don't care if the hardware looks like a busted toaster at the landfill. I just need it to work.
** I'm a hardware IT professional with >30 yrs experience. I've installed and managed 1,000's of machines and networks. But when I come home I don't want to be bothered troubleshooting my equipment daily. **
My home network contains ~120 network-attached devices, albeit load average is low. Nothing a quality router should have trouble with. The Amplifi HD installed very easily but I must report the first system I installed had a defective mesh point so I sent everything back for a new system. 2nd system installed easily and all three components are functioning properly. It's only been online for ~18 hours but that's 17.5 hours longer than any of my other routers lasted. I did call Amplifi tech support with questions about separating 2.4 and 5 networks and port forwarding. The rep was AMAZINGLY helpful. I'm mean shockingly knowledgeable! Bravo to Ubiquity for such high quality phone support. I'm still wondering if it was a dream.
I'm old school IT so managing a router via mobile app was weird as heck. I REALLY need a PC/web based interface to be happy... That said, it was so simple, a MAC person could do it... (it's just a joke). Also, the reason I needed a PC/web interface is because I was troubleshooting my old routers daily. But if the Amplifi just keeps working, I can just forget it - and that's the way IT should be. I have many other things here to play with instead of routers ; ). Like a car, you should be able to just "get in it and go". No fiddling under the hood.
- WiFi range is very good with the router and (2) mesh points. But 20K sq' might be a stretch unless you're in a warehouse with no walls.
- Performance is excellent on my LAN. Not concerned with the WAN because my ISP is so terrible I'm embarrassed to report my service rate.
- Installation is very simple. But I did take the time to change the default IP range and a few other settings. Would like web access but I realize I'm a dying breed.
- When creating a second SSID, the app forces a -2g or -5g name extension. They need to fix that. Don't tack on anything to our SSID name.
- Reliability. Yep, this is the big one. Just work man! And so far, it's working.
Yes this review is early in the game but I had to write something due to my horrible experiences with so many dreadful routers. Hopefully I can now cancel some of my psychiatrist sessions.
Here are several tips from my original confusions and errors in setting up.
For adequate functionality of setting up one must use the Amplifi App on an iPad or iPhone, and to get it on an iPad one must search for iPhone only. (Apple Store's nomenclature). Bluetooth must be ON and working. Unknown to me at first, Bluetooth was not working on my iPad until I turned all restrictions to OFF.
There are two basic pieces of equipment for an AmpliFi Mesh Wi-Fi System. A CUBE called an “AmpliFi HD Mesh Router”, and a STICK called an “AmpliFi MeshPoint HD” also known as a “wireless super mesh point”. The CUBE looks like a clock and has a power adaptor on a cord which plugs into wall receptacle of 110 volt AC power. The STICK plugs directly into such a wall receptacle.
There are two functions needed for a system. Function 1 is Router with Internet Connection which can only be accomplished with the CUBE. A short Ethernet cable goes from the CUBE’s blue rj47 receptacle (with icon of a globe) to a cable modem which provides internet service from a cable company. Start with CUBE #1 which gets setup as Router with Internet Connection.
Function 2 is Mesh Point -- a point of wireless connections. CUBE #1 provides both Functions 1 and 2. It is the both Router with Internet Connection and also the first Mesh Point of the system. One will want extra Mesh Points placed strategically to make a wider area of Wi-Fi service than that afforded by CUBE #1 alone. The extra mesh points may be either CUBEs or a STICKs or a mixture because their wireless function is the same. However, if one wants to extend a network from CUBE #1 to a place beyond wireless reach, one does that with Ethernet cable to another CUBE. The long Ethernet cable called “backbone” or “backhaul” goes to the blue rj47 jack of CUBE #2. Avoid my initial error of using a non-blue jack. Use the App toggle switch to designate CUBE #2 as dedicated for “backbone” use. It will communicate with CUBE #1 by Ethernet cable and it also becomes a Mesh Point where it is located. One may then place more Mesh Points about the areas of CUBEs #1 and #2 as needed.
Before trying to use CUBE #2 for backbone use, place it in wireless range of CUBE #1 and set it up by (1) connecting to the Wi-Fi system and (2) updating the firmware of all items in the system. The firmware update is easy to do and, in my experience, necessary because the toggle for backbone use did not show up in the App until after the firmware update. The older reviews complaining of no “backbone” function are out of date. The current firmware has that function included. I found that I needed to turn the backbone toggle of #2 to ON before moving #2 out of wireless range of #1 and connecting the Ethernet from #1 to the blue jack of #2.
My HP network printer worked immediately. To get my HP scanner to send to a network folder I had to tell Windows 10 that the Amplifi network is private, Windows had incorrectly guessed that it was public and that prevented scanning to my network folder. Also, Windows 10 will not work with an older network scanner unless one go to Windows "programs and features" and turns SMB1 to ON.
When receiving messages from the App or the screen on the CUBE as to what one is doing incorrectly, believe them to be true. The CUBE told me when I failed to connect to the correct jack (blue) for “back bone”. The App warned me when I was trying to use an incorrect procedure for adding additional mesh points. It is easy when one gets used to it, and tech support is available if needed. Searching Google for help also works well.
