Product description
The RØDE VideoMic Pro is a true shotgun microphone designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras and portable audio recorders as a source of primary and reference audio. At the heart of the VideoMic Pro is an all-new 1/2" condenser capsule that provides broadcast-quality audio via a 3.5mm mini jack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels) with an incredibly low self-noise of just 14db. A super-cardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimized, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera. The integrated Rycote Lyre based shock mounting system separates the VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap.

Easily accessible on the rear face of the microphone are the power, filter and level controls. In addition to the microphone's native 40Hz-20kHz response a selectable high-pass filter at 80Hz is available, which will prevent low end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded. |
Below these controls are the level settings, which attenuate or boost the recorded level as required. The -10dB level attenuation (or PAD) is ideal for recording loud sound sources, such as live music, motorsport, or interviews where the subject is very close to the camera. The +20dB level boost is designed for use with DSLR cameras, allowing the user to reduce the camera's preamp level (or mic-input level), effectively reducing the amount of noise generated by the camera's comparatively low quality audio circuitry. |
The microphone uses a standard sized shoe mount for on camera use, and features a 3/8-inch thread in the base of the mount for easy boom pole mounting. |

I purchased this mic from Amazon. I believe it was sold from Rode directly. Long story short, it got to me, and the mic didn't work at all. I would plug a battery in, and it would overheat really quickly.
I notified Amazon, and within 2 days (sooner than they quoted) I had a brand new Mic. I sent them the defective Mic (at their cost for shipping, so I wasn't charged a penny extra) and everything was solved!
I gotta say, I LOVE the response time on their part. I seriously thought I was boned for this shoot I had coming up, but the Mic arrived just in time, and it works FANTASTIC.
If you lower the recording level in your camera's settings, and then change the bottom switch to 20+ dB boost .
This gives you the best sound quality with very little noise. If you're smart with how you use it, this mic can be used for shooting so many things.
From interviews, to short films, and even commercials, this mic has been of great use to me.
I totally recommend it to anyone. From pro's, to those just getting started. Good sound is a must.

I had read people complaining about putting the battery in, so I carefully read the instructions and was able to remove/return the battery door on an EMPTY CHAMBER pretty easily. When I tried it with a 7-volt battery inserted, it became amazingly difficult.
After some thought and examination, I pulled off the RODE foam cover for the mic, exposing the battery mount area fully. Once I did that, putting the battery in and closing the door was easy. Kind of unfortunate that this is the easiest way to deal with it, but hardly the worst thing in the world.
Had to dial back the gain on my Nikon D850 to about 8 in order to eliminate the hiss (left the attenuation setting turned on), and then boosted the RODE by using that +20 switch. Sound was excellent, clearly audible from 10-15 feet away in a room with a ceiling fan running along with central air blowing - even better, the fan and air sounds really didn't register on the video. Sound sources from the side and behind were muted well in my tests.
Good mic, excellent for the price. No, you're not going to pick up a conversation from 50 feet away - get a wireless system if that's your goal. But if you're videoing within 20-30 feet, this thing works fine.
