Apparently, in order to keep babies from going up in flames, infant sleepers have to be either fleece (which stops being fluffy after only 3 washes), treated with fire resistant chemicals (um, no), or snug fitting (itchy!). Well, I was cheating by buying super big sleepers for my son, and just letting him sleep with floppy footies. Unfortunately, now that he is 9 months, the "snug fitting" sleepers are ridiculously tight, and he was waking up with freezing feet every night, even the fleece sleepers-- which are 20 bucks a pop where I live, and have to be replaced every month, because they pile up. Plus, he started crying whenever I zipped them up, because who on EARTH wants to sleep in a compression sack-- I certainly wouldn't. I itch when my tank tops are too tight!
So I finally pressed the button and got this little gem. I've used wool baby products before, so I would encourage anyone to "lanolinize" this every few months, which helps the wool resist moisture/pee, softens it, and allows you to wash it less, and makes it hang dry quicker. However, this is as soft as Egyptian cotton and the company says it's washable, so you don't really need to. (I always handwash with a little Dr. Bronners and lanolin, though, personally).
This bag has sturdy snaps (no scratchy velcro), which allow it to be comfy but form fitting on the upper body. Double snaps on the side comform to a smaller or bigger baby. Even though my son has TONS of room in the foot area to grow into, I have zero concerns that he will get twisted up in it... and he's a hard-core squirmer. Even with his constant caterpillar scooting and rolling, he's never complained or been uncomfortable in this, and when he does wake up at night, his feet are WARM, because he's basically sleeping in a giant mitten. It has a zip at the bottom for nighttime changes or, possibly, if you're kiddos feet are getting hot. There's an open/close spot at the crotch area for safety belts to go through. Plus, this saves money, because (underneath) the baby is sleeping in the same one-sies or shirts he/she would be using during the day, so you don't have to keep getting longer foot-ie pyja, or replacing the scratchy fleece ones.
Don't hesitate to buy this wonderful product. It's cozy, quality construction, and economical, in the long run.
Update: still going strong at 2 years, with occasional washing, but no special treatment whatsoever. It's even been thrown in the regular, high heat dryer several times, although I wouldn't recommend doing so regularly. My son sees the sack and knows it's time to "snuggle up" for bedtime. Love it!
I cannot believe how hard it can be here in the usa to find a practical, comfortable sleeping bag for a baby, and for an acceptable (under $50) price! So I went ahead and tried to look at the more expensive sleeping bags.
Unfortunately, this woolino sleeping bag turned to be too short for her. So I just put it aside. Yesterday, I decided to search for a sleeping bag for my second baby, who is now a week old and doesn't like to be swaddled (ah, I cannot reuse my miracle blanket!!).
I couldn't find one with all the criteria I wanted and that the woolino bag has:
SNAPS ON SHOULDERS for easy dressing,
SNAPS AT ARMPITS to adapt baby's size,
INVERTED ZIPPER - from down to top - so great for diaper changes!!!
and a BREATHABLE material suitable for a 65-68 degrees room during the night.
And I did not find any other - besides the merino kids bag ( that one is a little more expensive) - that would meet those criteria. So I decided to try the one I purchased on my newborn (8 lb 6oz and 22in) but was afraid it would be too big. But it fits her perfectly. Moreover, I can SHORTEN THE LENGTH of the bag by using the snaps provided, and it is perfect.
PROS:
NO OVERHEATING,
easy access for diaper changes,
easy to put baby in even if she is already asleep (just lay her on top and close all the snaps and zipper),
BREATHABLE AND NATURAL material, MACHINE WASHABLE,
FITS EVEN SOONER than 3months (of course, it depends on the size of your baby),
ONE SIZE so you don't have to buy several other bags as your baby grows.
(Ok, you can be doubtful as you touch the fabric, the merino wool is soooo thin, but it really keeps your baby warm without overheating.)
Nice gender - neutral color.
CONS:
NONE for me! Some people could be disappointed with the choice of color and patterns. You shouldn't care how your baby looks during the night, but if she is comfy, right?
Other sleeping bags I looked at and why I didn't go for them:
Grobag: this one has met all my criteria mentioned above, but it doesnt have an inverted zipper. also, the polyester filling in the 2.5TOG is not that breathable as wool is.
Deedee sleeping bag: after reading the reviews (poorly made, shrinks after washing, too "tight" on baby) and seeing it is polyester filling, I said no.
Lullabag in bamboo fabric: not warm enough for the temperature we have at night in our room.
What I already have but am not satisfied with:
the cotton halo sleepsacks are just fine, but very thin - only for summer time in southern california; the zzzipme sleeping bags from swaddle designs are also an acceptable choice but only because they have the two-way zipper - but they are fleece, it is really not breathable. And no shoulder snaps on those two, so you just struggle putting your baby in it if she is already asleep. Those are not "one size" bags so you have to buy more as baby grows.
Top reviews from other countries
My quest resulting in this sleep sack began with researching fire retardant usage in infant sleepwear. I slowly converted all of my 4 month old son's sleepers over to either 100% organic cotton, or ones with a tag that explicitly stated the blurb about wearing snug fitting; no fire retardants. As the weather got cooler, I realized he'd be using a sleep sack and obviously they are not snug fitting, therefore would have to be organic cotton if I wanted to avoid fire retardants. I considered getting one from Parade Organics, although realized it likely wouldn't be warm enough for the winter months (since his sleepers aren't warm fabrics like fleece either, for the reasons above). Enter WOOLINO! It just so happens that I have become a bit obsessed with wool recently, so knew about the antibacterial and water repellent nature of wool. The fact this is good for 2 mos - 2 yrs, and all four seasons made it a no brainer. Add - the fabric being 100% certified organic cotton outer and SUPER soft, naturally fire resistant (without nasty chemicals) merino wool on the inside, and you have a PERFECT product. The price is completely reasonable for how well made it is and what it offers. The first night he wore it, he soaked through his diaper and onto his sleeper - it didn't even touch the sleep sack due to the water repellent wool! That alone makes this worth every penny. The weight of it is so nice as well. He's only been in it for about a week now, but I get the impression it's helping him actually sleep longer! (don't want to jinx it!)
I just washed it for the first time today with some Eucalan wash, in my machine on delicates setting (cold, low spin, extra light soil level) and it came out fine. I read that a good way to prevent/reduce pilling is to wash it within the first few wears, so hopefully that helps because there already is a bit of pilling. Really doesn't bother me though considering everything else.
The packaging it came in was so beautiful, and one of the best perks is the little room thermometer it comes with! It tells you what sleepwear to have your baby in underneath the sleep sack based on what temp the room is. Genius!
I bought the earth colour and it's so beautiful. I would recommend this to EVERYONE :)
