Product Description
The Breville BES920BSXL Dual Boiler in Black Sesame offers commercial features and performance, in a domestic footprint. Espresso perfection requires precision temperature and pressure control, consistently, every time. At the heart of this machine is its dual stainless steel boiler heating system. The espresso boiler, for the espresso shot, is PID temperature controlled, while a separate steam boiler offers instant and powerful steam on demand. So you can extract your shot at the right temperature, delivering optimal flavor, while simultaneously steaming your milk to cafe quality. What's more, there is another element in the group head, ensuring the entire system maintains a consistent temperature. The Dual Boiler also features an Over Pressure Valve (OPV) which limits the maximum pressure throughout the extraction, preventing bitter flavors in the shot. It also offers a true low pressure pre-infusion, which gradually increases the pressure to gently expand the grinds for an even extraction. But there's much more to this machine for the coffee geek. Brew temperature and pre-infusion pressure and duration are all programmable. At the same time we've kept it simple with user-friendly features. An optional Auto Start setting preheats the machine at a programmed time; a top-fill 84 oz. (2.5L) water tank ensures easy access; and the dedicated hot water outlet makes it faster to preheat cups and prepare an Americano. There is also a shot clock and pressure gauge to help you improve your barista skills over time. The new Dual Boiler now includes a descaling function for cleaning at home, a Razor Dosing Tool for precision dosing and consistent extraction, plus a 2 year limited warranty. All you'll need are some freshly ground beans and a bit of practice to rival the best cafe.

Customers are mixed about the performance of the coffee maker. Some mention that it's easy to use and produces great results every time, while others say that the steamer stopped working altogether, rendering the machine unusable. Breville may not be a star brand in the coffee world (because Italians get that honor), but it's a premium brand in kitchen appliances. So the build quality is very nice and solid. I like how it comes with almost all that you need to get started right away, including the tamper and frothing pitcher. The instruction was clear (although you'd mostly get that from YouTube or just searching the web), so it was a breeze to get started quickly.
From turning on to reaching 200F, it took about 8 minutes or so. Then it was all ready to go. The first time, I filled the water by taking out the tank and filling it. But after a couple times, it was more convenient to get water and fill from the top. Opening the bottom drip tray, turning the knob, then moving the machine to take out the water tank was too troublesome. I only make a few shots at a time, so don't need to fill up the whole tank. Better to use fresh water each time.
As for the shots, I got it down to what seemed good after several tries of different grind sizes and always filling up to whatever that sizing scraper thing allowed. I always get at least two shots so only used double shot portafilter cup so far.
Just one minor improvement I'd like to see is that the hot water comes out very slowly. It's a double boiler so I expected a little more. I understand that it generates hot water on-the-fly, so can't be flowing a lot, but still could be a bit better. So I just boil water using electric kettle if I want an americano.
So this review is after two weeks of use. I shall make an update later after 3 months or so. Will update on the progress of making perfect capuccino as well. Hehe
The dual boiler is the best for simultaneously pulling a shot and steaming milk. The steam is very consistent and not too forceful, allowing one to steam milk to the perfect consistency. The rotating lever provides for adjusting the steam force and the wand rotates to the perfect position.
The Breville has flexibility in programming your shot. The temperature and the duration of how long it takes to pull the shot allows you to steam the milk while the shot is being pulled. Push the button and go for it!
You can fill the reservoir from either the back or the top of the machine, and the illuminated fill viewing port is a nice touch. I can't say enough about the tamper ... integrated into the machine (attached by a magnet) and with a line to note when you have the proper amount of coffee in the porta filter.
The drip tray is easy to pull, empty and clean. And the hidden compartment for a few tools is a nice touch.
This machine is a little lighter than some, I think tipping the scales at around 30 pounds, instead of 50 of my old one. What this means is that you need to put some light pressure to hold the machine while turning the porta filter. But that's a minor concern. And if you do need to scoot this machine across the counter, it has an ingenious method for having wheels pop out and you can easily push the Breville wherever you wish.
There is nothing I don't like about the Breville. For the cost and functionality, this is the best. My wife says my cappuccinos are as good as any we have had in Italy! Now that's a compliment and a testament to this machine!
UPDATE 9-25-18 - I have now been using this machine for 1 1/2 years, twice a day. I love it as much as the day I purchased it; I have had not a single issue, the cappuccinos continue to be first rate, and every single thing on it works like the day I came out of the box. I would highly recommend it.
Top reviews from other countries
This machine as EVERYTHING and more! it's very esthetic, looks massive without being massive and the software is completely intuitive...it's just perfect. the Portafilter is Heavy and feels really great, even the little tamper does a great job. from unboxing to operation....not even 20minutes. it's all there, on a big paper and in sequence...you can get it on without any drama!
UPDATE ON FROTHING: I got it!!!! it took me a little while (maybe 10 times) but I started being able to do micro-bubbles and now even heavier bubbles for cap. the steamer works great!!!
if you can't afford a 3000$+ machine (like me)....and want a machine that can actually deliver the same results.... THIS IS IT ! it may not last 20years like a 5000$ machine...but it does it all right now.
VERY IMPORTANT: Do not cheap out on the grinder......I did (dose control) and I will have to buy another one (definitely not breville).
I highly recommend this unit if you enjoy expresso the way it should be made. It comes with one Charcoal water filter and and a couple of Expresso Cleaning Tablets Charcoal filter should be replaced every two months or less depending on your water quality.

I highly recommend this unit if you enjoy expresso the way it should be made. It comes with one Charcoal water filter and and a couple of Expresso Cleaning Tablets Charcoal filter should be replaced every two months or less depending on your water quality.
My own experience with the machine was a nightmare. I unboxed it and initially started flushing the machine with water when I noticed a pool of water forming under the machine. It was leaking from the back panel of the unit! This unit also took forever to heat (like 1 hour.)
Needless to say I asked for a replacement thinking I had gotten a rare defect. The replacement was delayed and after a week I received it. Started setting it up and it heated up correctly. Finally had it set up and was brewing an espresso when I noticed another pool of water! There was no espresso pressure whatsoever because all the water that should have been going into the espresso was leaking out the back of the machine.
Returned everything. So disappointed...I wish they had built these machines out of more robust materials - I'd be willing to pay for it. Also if it wasn't made in China that might contribute to the product quality. Can't fault Amazon on this one though because their customer service was great and really understanding.
These machines are designed for a short life...
I actually own 2 of these. I bought the 2nd one while the first was out for repair and didn't want to be without it for Christmas... SO I have lots of experience with these machines! 4 years, 4 repairs (3 under warrantee). The last repair on the oldest machine lasted exactly 9 months and cost $350.
I have had issues with 2 brand new machines out of the box that had to be replaced. This is the dreaded 3 beeps steam boiler fails to fill. This is similar but not exactly the problem that occurs EVERY time you descale the machine. One of these was my 2nd purchase in 2018 and one was the brand new one they sent me for the first warrantee repair.
I opened up my recently deceased machine and it is clear why these machines are so fragile. The plumbing is plastic tubes and many plastic fittings. There are 2 Tee fittings that are made of of plastic. The plastic ages quickly because of the heat and just fails. Would be easy to repair but you cannot get parts.
Breville will no longer allow 3rd parties to repair these machines (which would be cheaper) they insist on a flat rate $350 charge no matter what is wrong. This is a lottery. Some times you get your machine back some times you get a brand new one.
If you don't expect stuff to last longer than the warrantee then by all means by this machine. It makes great expresso and the dual boiler is great to have. But if after the warranty runs out you will be paying Breville $350 every 9-12 months.
