Making Marriage Beautiful: Lifelong Love, Joy, and Intimacy Start with You Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 167 ratings

What makes a marriage beautiful? Honesty? Compatibility? Physical and emotional intimacy? All of these are important, but there’s one component that determines the quality and longevity of a marriage more than anything else: a willingness to grow.

Because a wedding joins together two imperfect people, all couples experience disappointment, conflict, and pain. How husbands and wives respond to these challenges determines the kind of people they will become and the kind of marriage they will have.

Making Marriage Beautiful reveals how the pursuit of Christ results in profound transformation for both the individual and the marriage. Rather than offering clichés and formulas, Greco relies on candor, humor, and real life stories to bring encouragement and wisdom to all couples, regardless of whether they have been married four weeks or forty years.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Making Marriage Beautiful is full of goodness and truth, and is one of the wisest and most comprehensive books on marriage I've ever read." (Karen Swallow Prior, PhD)"In this wise, winsome book, readers will find practical tools for understanding themselves and their partners, and learn how a robust faith in God can equip couples to face whatever life throws their way." - Publishers Weekly"With wise and winsome words reflecting decades of ministry experience, Dorothy Greco offers deep yet extremely practical ways to build a Christ-honoring, thriving relationship. This book will speak life-changing truth straight into the heart of your marriage."(Jeffrey P. Bjorck, PhD)

From the Author

There are literally thousands of marriage books out there. Making Marriage Beautiful is different for several reasons. One, it's written by a woman for both men and women. (Male authors are great but they don't know everything there is to know about marriage.) Two, it's super vulnerable. I include actual stories from my 25 year marriage as well as stories from eight diverse couples. Three, it's practical without being formulaic or cliche. And finally, it's both hopeful and funny. If you want to read more before you buy a copy, you can download chapter one from my website (dorothygreco.com).

As a marriage and family therapist there are a few books that rise to the top of 500+ book possibilities... this one absolutely rises to the surface. Written from a wonderfully balanced feminine viewpoint, by someone who thru the history of multiple seminars and clients knows what they're talking about. Definitely worth the read.

I’ve been married only five years, yet I’ve long been suspicious of Christian marriage books. So many would tell me to cram myself into a box of wifely expectations, only some of which are biblical. Not so with Making Marriage Beautiful. In this delightful book, we come to know author Dorothy and her husband Christopher as if we were meeting with them in an intimate small group setting. They share both failures and triumphs, normalizing the long and sometimes arduous process of making our own marriages beautiful. Other members of this literary small group include couples she’s interviewed; whatever our ethnicity, socioeconomic status, or length of time married, we all find partners along the journey. Greco constantly invites us into further growth both as individuals and as a couple.

Whether we’re navigating disappointment, anger, cultural expectations, addictions, loss—whatever it is, Greco has a true-life story, points us to Christ and one another, and helps us move forward. Her clarion call to be our best Christ-like selves through sacrificial love, listening, confession, and joy seems attainable, for she lets us take it step by step. Perhaps the most beautiful sentiments Greco gives are her realization that her book is a prayer for us all (19) and her encouragement to keep working in the garden of our marriage for “All will be made beautiful in time” (242).

Making Marriage Beautiful offers wisdom, courage, guidance, and partnership on the challenging road of marriage. May we all be transformed as Greco helps us realize our longing for lifetime love, joy, and intimacy!

I've never married but hope to someday. Since my parents' marriage didn't last, I've been committed from a young age to reading about marriage so that I can do it as well as I can. Most, if not all, of the books I have read written by women have had some wisdom to them, but tend to be fairly shallow- more about how I can be the perfect wife, conforming to certain cultural expectations. So, not very helpful, and I haven't kept any of them. This book, however, goes past gender role expectations and looks at the nitty gritty of a relationship at work over many years. Dorothy shares personally about her relationship with her husband, in all its reality, and walks us through many of the issues most marriages confront over the years. She goes deep, too, and encourages her readers to go deep in their own relationships. This isn't a "how to patch up your marriage" book; this is a "go to the roots" kind of book. As a single person, I found myself underlining many passages since some of the concepts she explores apply to friendships and other relationships as well. This is worth investing in!

The Grecos do an amazing job of sharing their own story in a way others can really use it. Its not just a great and interesting read it is also very practical. I will need to read and re-read and use over time to get all the benefits of this book. I have been married almost 15 years and have 3 children and found this book very helpful in navigating the stage of marriage where nothing is new anymore and yet we get stuck in the same old fights. This book showed me how I could do something about me and not just let my husband know what he could do to improve the marriage. I find knowing what I can do about me very helpful as I have learned all to many times how it does not work to try to fix the other person. I feel excited about building our marriage using this book for years to come. Thank you Dorothy and Christopher for pouring yourselves out into this book to share with the world.

I liked the use of interviews to illustrate points.
Recommend reading for married couples—premarrieds may have too many stars in their eyes to benefit.
A chapter to premarrieds would have been better.

A must read for anyone engaged, married, or contemplating divorce. Before you call your lawyer, even if you are not remotely Christian, read this book. Here's why:
"Making Marriage Beautiful" details successes and struggles that every married couple goes through, and brings light to the many little things most of us do not think about or cannot see while actually inside a marriage. "Making Marriage Beautiful" reminds us that we do not live in silos, that yes, other couples do have the same, or similar problems, as we do. "Making Marriage Beautiful" also reminds us that no matter how bad they may seem in the moments, few marital problems are insurmountable. The writer, Dorothy Greco, is funny, relatable, and counseling without being overly "rah rah," as some self-help books are, or preachy, as some Christian books on marriage are. At the end of each chapter, she asks you to ask yourself a few thought-provoking questions. These questions can be referred back to and asked again and again as a marriage grows older and the individuals that make up a couple change.

In Making Marriage Beautiful, Dorothy Greco dives into some deep, tough stuff while simultaneously making you feel like you are sitting across the table at a coffee shop having a chat. I guess that would be a totally one-sided chat, since she gets to do all the talking :) But seriously, this book reminded me of the importance of staying connected to my husband. It made me thankful for the relationship we have. And it encouraged me to not be content with the status-quo, but to do the hard work of loving each other like Jesus loves us. She speaks to so many different aspects of the marriage relationship and is open and transparent about challenges she and her husband have faced. Well worth reading, underlining and keeping handy as an encouragement and guide.
