annnnnnd way too many other headphones that are cheaper that I won't list. I listen to tidal HIFI and I usually listen on my Chromebook or one of my android devices with usb audio player pro (or just the tidal app itself).
So ever since I bought the HE400s I have had a love-hate relationship with them. Mainly because this is my first mid-fi headphone purchase and the $300 price tag has been hard for me to come to grips with. In fact I almost returned them. Every audiophile knows my conundrum I would suppose. They sound good but so do my $99 Grados.. Are they 3x as good as Grados? It's hard to quantify.
There are a couple issues that I have with the HE400s. The main issue is the lack of bass extension. This causes some music to lack weight and solidity (especially pop/rap/metal) which is slightly annoying. Other times I think that the bass is just right though, and I think if there was added bass then the beautiful mids may suffer. I have not tried the focus pads yet because I think that $39 dollars for a couple tiny pads is ridiculous.
The other issue I have with this headphone is much more difficult to describe and put my finger on. The best way I can describe it is that as you turn the volume up the right parts of the music don't get louder... It seems like the undesirable edges and breathiness of the track get in the way of main dynamic notes when you are trying to crank the volume. This leaves you with a feeling that you want the volume louder, but making it louder doesn't satisfy the itch. Like the wrong frequencies are getting loud, not the desirable parts of the song you want to hear louder. I know what some readers may be thinking, that this is an issue with the rest of my chain such as the amplifier. That's not the case though. Anyway, I suspect this issue is partly due to the open back design, the lack of bass and/or the overall sound style/frequency response of the headphones. This same issue may also be the reason why these headphones rarely cause listener fatigue. I'm not sure. Keep in mind that I'm exaggerating the magnitude of this issue for the sake of trying to describe it, it's really not that bothersome. For some I could see it being a deal breaker though. I bet the focus pads fix this issue. Take this paragraph with a grain of salt, like I said the issue is hard to put my finger on. (EDIT : I no longer find this an issue. I was not experienced with the amount of detail these cans produce and I attribute my initial issue to that inexperience.)
Let's move onto the positive of these headphones. Wirecutter calls these headphones the best open back under 500, and Tyll from Innerfidelity says they are better than the hd600. I don't have any experience with the hd600 so I couldn't comment on that. These headphones are critically acclaimed, and that's kinda why I bought them. The level of detail on these cans is truly great. They sound so good that paired with Tidal/dragonfly v1.5 they have caused me to expand my horizons genre-wise and pretty much anything is immersive. They really have been a revelation. You can distinguish the production quality on individual tracks very easily. I'm not going to get into all the audiophile descriptive terms used to describe the sound of these headphones because 1) I'm not qualified (I could fake it 'til I make it, but I've found that the listening experience is very subjective and descriptive terms can help to an extent, but really the sound coming from these headphones needs to be experienced and can't be confined with some elegant descriptors) 2) Other reviewers have already done this if you search the net. Basically these headphones really do sound magical. They are comfy as heck and they are in another league above all my other headphones including the hd598 and x11i. Although the x11i has more weight and impact, it sounds more congested and lacks a certain magic and personality that the he400s has.
So now the conclusion. Am I glad I bought these? Yes.? Do I fall more in love with them everyday? Check. I'm starting to get the impression that it would be very difficult to be completely satisfied with any one headphone though. There is no perfect magical headphone that you couldn't find a fault with, unless you spent thousands of dollars probably, and even then you could find a song that doesn't sound as good as with another pair of headphones. That's just how it works. Taken as a whole these headphones are fantastic. I can't recommend them over other headphones in their price range due to lack of experience, but I have a suspicion that the more experienced reviewers are right: these headphones are a best buy. They have a certain depth of character and personality that make sure the listening experience never gets old. It's like hanging out with that witty charismatic friend you have, they never cease to surprise you with something new and refreshing.
These headphones truly are special and you owe it to yourself to try them out. Get tidal hi-fi and a nice dac/amp. If you are a student you can get half off the monthly price of tidal as well. You need an amp to power these. I don't know why people keep saying you can use these without an amp, thats some BS right there. The volume and fullness is nowhere near desirable without one IMO.
EDIT: (6/30/16) I love these headphones so much. I think as my ears adjust I just fall further in love. I recant any qualms I had at any point with these phones. Amazing. Buy them now. Press buy! You will thank me as you go on the musical relationship of a lifetime. I'm not going to delete my initial review, because there is something to my original complaints, but I will say much of my impressions were a result of unrefined newbie ears. If that's a thing.
I had the HE400S for about 4 weeks, now have the HE400i, and the HE1000. So here's what I know as far as the three of these HiFiMan. . . . . They all three ROCK. All however in their own way.
In general (painting with a wide brush here) -
->HE400S is the pair to have if you simply don't have the funds for the HE400i's. Once broken in - yes, they absolutely need the 120+ hours of reasonable volume streaming to get them in their happy place, I was really enjoying the HE400i's. They have by far the most bass of the three HiFiMan's. More is not necessarily better; it's all about your personal taste. Once those HE400S's were broken in the bass was really distinctive, and strong. The sound stage is miles better then many of your $150 cans, certainly closed types like the traditional 'Audio-Technica' etc. There's just something about a pair of open backed Planners that will keep you engaged for hours un-end. So the HE400S'w get my thumbs up. I ran them off of the JDS Labs Objective2+ODAC Rev B. Given the lack of the efficiencies of these cans, this is what I consider a minimum requirement to make them work. That being said, I was happy with my investment.
-> HE400i is without a doubt a good upgrade from the HE400S if you can afford the extra cash. Better sound stage, and more refined bass. Not more bass (actually seemed to be less), but nicer, cleaner, and more accurate to what I enjoy listening to. I ran these on the same JDS Labs Objective2+ODAC Rev B. The headphones are more efficient, but even with that being said, I still would have an amp off of a streaming media server (laptop or similar), and by no means a handheld phone. I still run the HE400i's w/ the O2+DAC almost daily and really do enjoy this combination. For the under $1k, you can't go wrong. You will be 80% 'there' at a fraction of the cost of some higher-end gear and have a KILLER set-up w/ a sound stage that will blow you away. When compared to standard bass-filled headphones plugged into the laptop directly, it's truly a night and day difference. Comfortable - Yes. Sound great - YES. Get ready for a whole new way of listening to music (every breath, every whisper, every little ounce on that recording seems to come alive).
=> HE1000. . . . Well, one will say, for the money, these better be good. Are they? Well, yes. They are crazy good. But at the same time, they are more than 6 times the price of the HE400i, and to take advantage of them, you will need hardware 10x the price of the JDS O2+DAC. So if you have the money you can put into this project, by all means, get yourself the HE1000, and check out the Schiit's Gungnir Multibit and Mjolnir 2 tube amp all run in balanced mode. This will take you back a tad over $5k, but will give you some really nice ear candy. Comfortable - Yes. Sound Great - Crazy good. I can listen, and sometimes do listen, to these for hours - they are amazing.
