A biography of the pioneering scientist and environmentalist, Rachel Carson, author of Silent Spring.

"Once you are aware of the wonder and beauty of earth, you will want to learn about it," wrote Rachel Carson.

Determined and curious even as a child, Rachel Carson's fascination with the natural world led her to study biology, and pursue a career in science at a time when very few women worked in the field.

This lyrical, illustrated biography follows Carson's journey—from a girl exploring the woods, to a woman working to help support her family during the Great Depression, to a journalist and pioneering researcher, investigating and exposing the harmful effects of pesticide overuse.

Best known for writing
Silent Spring, Rachel Carson was a major figure in the early environmental movement, and her work brought a greater understanding of the impact humans have on our planet.  Rachel Carson and Her Book That Changed the World offers a glimpse at the early life that shaped her interest in nature, and the way one person's determination can inspire others to fight for real change.

An author's note delves into how
Silent Spring helped shape the modern environmental movement and inspired a generation of readers to get involved in conservation.

Detailed source notes and a list of recommended reading are included.

This is a beautiful and important book for kids and adults alike. It is a true story that needs to be known by more people. Great lessons/information.

This is a wonderful book as an introduction to children of all ages about the pollution and the environment. It tells the story of Rachel Carson, author of "Silent Spring." This book explains how hard she worked as a single, educated woman to apply her science knowledge to what she saw going on the world. The illustrations in the book are as a lovely as the writing. And, I especially liked the epilogue at the end of the book, telling what happened after her book, "Silent Spring," was published as well as the sources notes. I have purchased five copies of this already for grandchildren and will probably order more for teachers' gifts.

My daughter is going to school to be an Environmental Scientist and I bought her this to read to her two daughters. She loves it and thinks she will be able to use it in presentations at local schools during her last year in university.

What a lovely way to introduce children to the mother of modern environmentalism. Even Rachel Carson, who was so shy and retiring, would have to be pleased with the charming illustrations and important messages in this book.

You surely know who Rachel Carson is if you're buying this book. It tells the story of her life from childhood until her death, highlighting so many of her accomplishments and challenges. I gave this to my niece for her first day of junior kindergarten. It's too advanced for her now but I hope that her mother will read it to her periodically over the years as a way to demonstrate that doing what you love and working hard for it will pay off.

My 2.5 year old is completely fascinated with this book ever since we've bought it! Rachel Carson's life story is truly vididly depicted such that small kids can understand it as well as stay engaged for the entire duration of the book which is commendable on the part of the writer as well as Illustrator!!
Plus it sensitizes the kiddos towards environmental issues as well as nature!
