"I laughed my way through this novel. A must-read from Meredith Schorr." - Chick Lit Plus
It's more about finding yourself than finding a man...Jane Frank is ready to fall in love. It's been a year since her first and only relationship ended and far too long since the last time she was kissed. With the LSAT coming up, she needs to find a boyfriend (or husband) before acing law school and becoming a partner at her father's firm. There's just one problem: all the guys in New York City are flakes. Interested one day and gone the next, they seemingly drop off the face of the earth with no warning and no explanation.
In her misguided belief that life doesn't really start until you get married and have kids, Jane jumps from one extreme to the next trying to force a happily ever after until she breaks. Will she ever find her path, and can she do it without alienating her friends and family and risking her career in the process?
A State of Jane is a hilarious, heartwarming, and honest coming-of-age story of what happens when a good girl discovers there is more to finding love than following the rules.

About the author

A born and bred New Yorker and lifelong daydreamer, Meredith Schorr fueled her passion for writing everything from restaurant reviews, original birthday cards, and even work-related emails into a career penning romantic comedies. When she’s not writing books filled with grand gestures and hard-earned happily-ever-afters or working as a trademark paralegal, she’s most often reading, running, or watching TV…for research, of course. Her trade paperback debut, As Seen On TV, will be published by Forever on June 7, 2022.

Jane's dating woes and how they changed her felt authentic to me. I empathized with her and said, "Oh, Jane!" to my Kindle a lot when her "me" phase started to negatively affect not only her relationships with friends and family, but her future prospects for a career in law. The author did a great job in showing how Jane's selfishness impacted her inner circle - supportive, fertility-challenged sister Claire, good-natured BFF Marissa, surprisingly sage, man-hungry roomie Lainie. These supporting characters were all well-defined, which is no small feat when a book is written from a first-person POV. Even the male characters, many of whom didn't last on the page for long, were fully fleshed out and memorable. I've got to admit to having a soft spot in my heart for Jane's ex, Bob. He seemed like such a sweetheart - kind, smart, considerate. I was hoping that Jane might find her way back to him. Did that happen? I'll never tell. Pick up a copy of the book and see for yourself where (and with whom) Jane ends up. I liked that the author didn't tie everything up in a neat, little bow in the last chapter, so there's the possibility of a sequel. It would be interesting to see where Jane's journey takes her next after all she's experienced and learned in ASOJ.
This is the second Meredith Schorr book I've read and it's great to see her evolution as a writer. I anxiously await the release of her next novel, BLOGGER GIRL, later this summer.
This book highlighted exactly why I hate dating. Seriously. Hate it with a vengeance. I, like Jane, am type-A, and the things that you can't plan for are what really shake me to my core. Everything in Jane's life threw her for a loop when she thought it'd be so easy. That's what we type-A's are like. We just can't help but be overprepared and underprepared at the same time.
I will say, Jane was getting to be unbearable as a character. She was so selfish through most of it, but then realized it just in time to try to make things right. Character growth is something that not enough books have anymore. Flawed characters are relatable because we don't like reading about perfect people (well, I don't, anyway). On the one hand, I don't blame Jane completely because I was rooting for every new guy she met only to be crushed when it blew up in her face. Oh yeah. I got invested.
The only complaint I had was actually with the book formatting. Toward the end, it did something weird where the words got huge and then really tiny and I'm not sure why. But overall, a great read!
As the book goes on Jane begins to lose her upbeat, quirky personality and becomes bitter and cynical in regards to dating and men in general.
I really wanted to love this book, but it fell short for me. The multiple men Jane dated throughout the book were hard to keep track of and were continually referred to in different parts of the story. I also felt that Jane's bitter and cynical turn made her far less endearing as a main character.
In saying that, I enjoyed the dialogue between Jane and her colleague, Andrew. It was funny and at points I laughed out loud.
I would consider this a good book and if you're looking for a funny, chick lit book then give this a try. I'd read another book by Meredith Schorr.
This one wasn't like this. The main character got on my nerves a few times with all her whining about being twenty-something and single. Come on! I didn't like the way it ended, it wasn't really that funny....
I'm sorry I lost the time reading it.

Jane is crazy in a sort of naive way, but at heart she just wants to be loved and to go through life with a partner. Her only previous relationship was very much a boy/girl thing which she grew out of. Now she wanted someone to share the ups and downs of life. Eventually she does, but oh, what a lot of frogs she has to kiss on the way. I'm a mature lady of a certain age, the mother of five and grandmother of two, but I found myself reliving my youth as she vividly described those first exciting feelings one discovers when you first meet someone. No matter what age you are, it's those first halcyon days you remember and treasure most. When I started to read the second half in bed last night, I decided I couldn't go to sleep until I had finished it, but I went to sleep with a satisfied feeling which only a good ending can give. Jane is not the only strong character in the book and I suspect that some of the others might find their way into a book of their own.
I would recommend this book to anyone wanting light reading on holiday or if, like me, you just want a feel good book to go to bed with. I will certainly be buying her next book.

I am only half way through and it's getting a but dull
