Mack Daddy: A Single Dad Romance Kindle Edition
They called him Mack Daddy. No, seriously, his name was Mack. Short for Mackenzie. Thus, the nickname. Perfect, right?
So was he: perfect. The perfect physical male specimen.
At the private school where I taught, Mack Morrison was the only man around in a sea of women.
Everyone wanted a piece of the hot, single father of the sweet little boy.
I became a woman I didn’t recognize, someone riddled with jealousy, because they didn’t know that—to me—he was much more.
They didn’t know about our past.
He’d chosen my school for his son on purpose, because Mack and I, we had unfinished business.
As my friend, Lorelai, so eloquently put it: “Unfinished business between two people who are clearly attracted to each other is like an eternal case of blue balls.” And I was suffering in pain from my case.
I was still intensely attracted to Mack. I tried to resist him, immersing myself further into a relationship with someone else just to protect my heart.
Not to mention, getting involved with a parent was strictly against school rules. But seeing Mack day in and day out was breaking me down.
And soon I might be breaking all the rules.
Author's note – Told in alternating points of view, Mack Daddy is a full-length standalone novel.

P (since nick names are the theme of this book ) does not beat around the bush. Right off the bat Frankie is united with her college love after nearly a decade. Frankie is a teacher at a private catholic school. On the first day of school she comes face to face with the man she used to love in college. Frankie always knew she was different – she wears thick glasses, is awkward around people, and mostly keeps to herself. Mack comes from a privileged family, sexy as sin and can have any woman he wants. But Mack sees the real Frankie behind the thick glasses – he is the only one that gets all her quirks, understands her, and sees through her soul. Mack was Frankie’s roommate/best friend/crush/her dream but he destroyed her heart when he left college before summer and never came back. When something like this happens in the story, I usually resent the guy who breaks the girls heart but in this story I cannot even blame Mack. In leaving Frankie behind he broke her heart but I understood his reasons 100% and I actually respect him for it. He made a very difficult decision that changed the course of his life but he did it out of respect, responsibility and love for another. Frankie is a sweet, caring, trusting, loving person but she has suffered some abandonment issues in her past so what happened back in college really destroyed her heart. Frankie is seemingly moving on with her life now. The last thing she expects is Mack to waltz back into her life with a renewed purpose – To win her back. Mack pulled out all the tricks to woo her but is it too late?
I have to say I love both characters in this book. Frankie is such a lovable character. What I love most about Frankie is her honesty. She speaks her mind even if it embarrasses her in front of Mack. What you see is what you get with her. Mack, I cannot say enough of him. The college Mack is sexy, sweet, romantic and funny. Many times he can take advantage of the situation or selfishly give in to his wants but Mack resisted because he is simply a good guy. The grown up version of Mack is even better - more mature, responsible, loving and still sexy as hell. Mack’s actions throughout the book speak volumes of his character. As I said before, I admire and respect him but aside from that I totally want to jump Mack – he is that yummy ladies.
Mack Daddy is a second chance love story but there is a little bit more to that. The book also addresses a devastating disease known as OCD. It also deals with children and broken families. I like that the story has all the feels – lighthearted, romantic, some parts were emotional, quite a bit of hilarious/cute banters and of course very delicious sexy scenes. I adore the heroine -- totally swoony over the hero. Love the plot. Penelope never ceases to amaze me with her gorgeous stories and amazing words. This one is a MUST READ!!!!

I enjoyed this book however it wasn't what I expected. Of course I made my assumptions from the blurb and cover. I expected a light, sexy, erotic second chance romance. Mack Daddy was a complicated, angsty, sad story with very complex characters. The build of tension between our couple was not only sexual. There was regret. Misunderstandings and so many other obstacles in the way. As far as intimacy goes, this couple did not even kiss (or anything else) until the last third of the book. Truthfully, I didn't mind that at all. I was so engrossed in the complexity and angst that my main focus was just praying they'd find a way to make a relationship work. Oh did I mention all the obstacles?
Both Mack and Frankie were likable characters. For all their faults, present and past, I wasn't angry or frustrated with them. But I was definitely angry and beyond frustrated with their circumstances. Too many cons played against Mack and Frankie. Fortunately their love for each other was solid so they fought for their HEA. Was that battle easy. No. It. Was. Not!
Mackenzie (Mack) and Francesca (Frankie).....
Rewind eight years and that's where it all began. Mack and Frankie were college roommates along with one other person. Frankie was the geek. She wore thick purple eyeglasses, was extremely shy and suffered with social anxiety. Frankie also lived with OCD, which only made her anxiety worse. But Frankie was strong-willed enough to overcome/live with her issues. And Mack's friendship helped to lead her out of her shell.
Mack was the complete opposite of Frankie. He was outgoing, arrogant, self-assured and not afraid to say whatever was on his mind. Most of which embarrassed Frankie. He said some seriously, outrageous things.
Mack and Frankie got off to a rocky start. Let me say the moment of their first meeting was hysterical. Frankie was so embarrassed and as a reader, I cringed right along with her. There were many, many more comedic moments to lighten the angst. On a positive note...as depressing as this book was at moments for me, the frequency of laugh-aloud humor did an excellent job of balancing it all out.
Part of the dialogue/monologue is several flashbacks in time to when Mack and Frankie first met and how their friendship developed. I appreciated the backstory because it gave me more perspective into the myriad of emotions both Mack and Frankie dealt with. The things they had to overcome really wasn't fair but life usually isn't in a romance novel.
Mack Daddy not only has a complex storyline; they're are a lot of secondary characters. Though some of those characters were great, there were several I despised. But justice was served so there is that. I went through a lot of reflection while reading, wondering how the heck this book could have a happy ending. But I promise you it does. Another plus...the end was amazing, gratifying and emotional. I loved every minute of it. This was my first book by this author but definitely not my last.
Mack Daddy is a second chance romance story that just drew me in. It was so easy to read and so easy to get addicted to. Frankie and Mack just made me happy and to me, that’s one of my favorite things to be when reading.
Mack Daddy is the story of Frankie, a teacher at a Catholic elementary school and Mack, the guy she knew years ago. Frankie has tried to move on, she’s done the best she can. And then one day Mack walks back into her life. Seems he couldn’t let go either. But the situation is complicated. Can they have a second chance at romance?
Mack is so damn lovable. He has a great personality. He’s sweet, witty, and delicious. He’s caring and a little cocky but he’s also vulnerable. He knows Frankie is the one, she always has been. Now he’s back in her life and he wants her. And he plans to do what he has to do to get her back. I liked that even though he loved and wanted her, there were moments when he doubted himself and whether he was making the best choices. I loved Frankie. She is so sweet and kind. The two of them were just meant to be together. They made me swoon big time. And Mack’s neighbor, Mrs. M., was such a great addition to the story. She said the funniest things that had me laughing out loud.
The story is told in dual point of view and starts out a little light and gets more angsty as it goes on. I loved the use of flashbacks to learn about Frankie and Mack’s relationship in the past. The story had me smiling, laughing and falling in love.

Five Wonderful Mac & Frankie Stars
It was such an emotional read for me. I think I didn’t pay much attention while reading the blurb, especially to the last paragraph but when I started reading the book, it came to me as quite a surprise that both characters seemed to be in a relationship with other people. Francesca (or “Frankie” as Mac called her) was living with her boyfriend of two years Victor. And Mac seemed to be married to his son’s mother Torrie (luckily, I misinterpreted this part, and at least he wasn’t married to her anymore).
I absolutely hate any kind of cheating, even when a person is in a relationship with somebody, nothing physical happens with this other person (the third party), but that person still has feelings for somebody else than their current relationship partner. For the same reason, I hate love triangles. It’s just too much drama for me, and I can get very upset reading stories like this. And let me tell you, I realized that main characters had current or past relationships with somebody else, and I still couldn’t put the book down. Once I started reading it, I couldn’t stop. It was so well-written and addicting.
What can I say? I rooted for Mac and Frankie till the very end. They both were just wonderful. So nice, caring, mature, and so in tune with each other even after all the years apart. It’s very rare that I like both main characters exactly the same and don’t want to smack in the head at least one of them at some point of the story, but here I am, completely charmed by them both. I didn’t care who they were with before or even at the time when they meet again in the beginning of the book. There was just so much love, and loss, and all kinds of obstacles between these too, I cried through the second part of the book and thought it would never work. Literally, everything was against them. And I just knew, they were so right for each other, it would break my heart if they couldn’t be together in the end. I just didn’t know how this could happen...
I really liked Mac’s neighbour in Boston, Mrs. M. She was this wonderful 82-years-old woman with a whole lot of wisdom, the most understanding and caring heart... and the dirty mouth you would never expect on somebody her age. I think if it wasn’t for her, things would have gone very differently. She was a fairy godmother these two needed.
Even though we don’t see a lot of her, I also really liked Mac’s brother Michaela. At some point by the end of the book, I wanted to tell her, You go girl! You are thinking exactly the way I’m thinking and I would’ve done the same thing if I were in her shoes.
And of course, I need to mention a shy little boy with dark-brown curls and thick glasses, who I stole my heart from the moment he appeared in the book. It was Jonah, Mac’s and Torrie’s son. I just wanted to hug and cuddle him and shield him from all the bad things in the world. That poor kid with so much anxiety and other issues he had to deal every day. I’m no stranger to mental health problems, and if I could, I would’ve totally taken it all away from him. And just like Mac, I can’t thank Frankie enough for everything she did for little Jonah. She really did light up Mac’s and Jonah’s world.
I can’t recommend this book enough up to the point that I’ve just finished it and I want to reread everything again just because I can’t seem to let go of my two favourite characters and I want to experience everything again. And if there is one thing that I hate incomparably more than cheating and love triangles, it’s rereading something that I’ve just read. But the book is so good, and the story so great, I’m making exceptions for it from my every rule.
But the other part of novels is almost as important as the content and genre and that is the writing style and the ability of the author to take you into the situation and bring out emotions. Be it excitement, sadness or even tears sometimes.
Penelope Ward is a master at it. Beautifully written novel and very well executed in terms of timing and connections. There are moments when you feel like jumping on the couch and sometimes it would make you twitch.
Frankie and Mack go a long way and you don't know what it is but their paths converge again. Frankie wants to resist the temptation given the past and Mack wants to make amends. Both are right, both are wrong. It's only the heart that matters in the end. Circumstances and situations make them do things that they may regret and some of them they actually do. The question finally is that is it all gonna be fine in the end? And how? the journey matters a lot there.

Well, not ALL night- but til 1.30am & I had to be up at 6 for work.
Eh, who needs sleep anyway....
The ARC reviews for this book were really positive. Penelope is a favourite author of mine. I love second chance romances. I knew Frankie had an established love (Vic, seventeen years her senior) when Mack appears in her life again after eight years away and that bothered me because I don't do love triangles generally speaking. However, I sported my big girl pants and took a risk. So very glad I did.
Mack and Frankie are meant to be together. There were obstacles before and there are equally huge obstacles when their lives connect again. But Mack has longed for Frankie the whole time they were apart and when life threw a window of opportunity at him that meant they could meet again, he seized it. As a hero, he was driven, determined, a loving father and so very much in love with Frankie. He fights for her. I felt Vic did not fight enough for her- that said , he remains an incredibly loyal friend to her.
Frankie is very loveable. She has never quite lost her quirkiness and sweetness. My heart ached for her sometimes. And I never once disliked her which surprised me given that this was a story where the heroine has links to two men and I would normally avoid that. For those of you still undecided , you only ever see Frankie and Mack intimate together. (Seriously hot!)
The story is intriguing and addictive. There are a few flashbacks woven in which work beautifully. Dual POV. It is a sexy, funny, sweet, heartbreaking and memorable story with a great ending. A second chance love story that leaves you beaming.
