The Rakehell's Seduction (The Seduction Series Book 2) Kindle Edition
Ambrose Worthing is no gentleman. He’s a proud cold-hearted rake who’s determined to stay a bachelor forever. He enjoys bedding a different woman every night without the risk of falling in love. When he hears about a wager over the seduction and ruination of the daughter of his father’s best friend, he knows he must intervene. Committing himself to the bet, he agrees to seduce Lady Alexandra Rockford—for her own good. He never expected the lady in question to be a beautiful, fiery creature who has passions of her own that call to his guarded heart.
SHE’S VOWED NEVER TO FALL IN LOVE AGAIN
Alexandra Rockford has sworn off men, her heart still broken from the false promises of a childhood sweetheart who left her to marry an heiress. When she stumbles into Ambrose outside of a country ball, she knows the rake is trouble. His smile, his touch, his forbidden kiss are all too tempting but being with him would ruin her. Determined to enjoy herself without falling in love, Alex can’t help but let her defenses down with the too charming rake. But when she discovers Ambrose is seducing her to win a bet, it will take everything Ambrose has to prove to her that he is worthy to love her.

Ambrose Worthing was at a country dance to find one particular woman. He wasn’t looking for this lady to pursue a romantic relationship. He had no interest in being tied down to one woman. He considered himself a permanent bachelor and he liked it that way. He sought this particular lady to seduce her, win a bet, and hopefully save her. Someone had placed a bet in the books at White’s offering 5000 pounds to whoever seduced and publically ruined the Earl of Rockford’s daughter. Rockford was a good friend of Ambrose’s father. Out of duty to him, and to prevent the lady the most harm, Ambrose had signed his name accepting the bet. He would make sure her seduction was quick and painless, keeping her safe from true scoundrels. He became sidetracked in his task though, when he literally ran into a woman at the dance. Her soft, husky voice, blue eyes, easy smile, and humor soon had him forgetting all about the Earl of Rockford’s daughter. The lady seemed to be taken with him as well. That is, until she learned his name. His reputation as a rakehell had obviously preceded him. Using his well- known charm, he felt confident in his wooing abilities. Until she kneed him in the crotch. Ambrose was shocked by her reaction to him, and even more shocked when he realized the lady was none other than the one he sought- Alexandra Rockford.
Though 22, Alex Rockford had never had a season. She preferred her life in the country to the social whirlwind of London. Considered a hoyden, Alex preferred racing her horse through the countryside rather than sitting inside like other ladies. She was content to spend time at home and to have control over her own destiny. Having had her heart broken five years ago, she had no desire to be hurt again. When she’d first met Ambrose in the garden, she was taken with his masculine perfection. He unsettled her though, and she didn’t like it. Discovering he was a family friend though put her in a difficult position. She’d have to play the polite hostess for her father, but she wouldn’t fall for Ambrose’s charms. Someone like him could ruin her.
In the week that followed, when Alex wasn’t sabotaging Ambrose, or Ambrose wasn’t trying to seduce Alex, they found they agreed on quite a few things and actually enjoyed being together. Ambrose was surprised to discover that, for the first time in his life, he was enjoying himself with a woman outside of bed. The intimacy of talking and sharing parts of themselves with each other frightened Alex. She didn’t want to be vulnerable. Ambrose continued to tempt her with kisses. Kisses that were raw, carnal, and drove her mad with desire. A feeling she didn’t want to end. Ambrose wanted Alex more than he’d wanted anything. And in spite of her vow to resist him, Alex couldn’t help but respond to the passion he made her feel. Once Ambrose made love to Alex, the bet seemed less important. She’d hate him once she discovered the truth. She’d never know he’d wanted to save her from a fate with a worse man than he.
I love stories where the protagonists rattle each other’s cages. Ambrose’s pursuit of Alex was delicious. He took such delight in provoking her. Alex was delightful and witty. Her schemes to waylay Ambrose were hysterical. And he handled them so beautifully. Lauren Smith creates some of the most endearing characters I’ve ever read. If you love stories with the perfect blend of sweet, steamy, and fun, you’ll be swept away by this one. I am anxious to see whose seduction is next!

n.
1540s, possibly an alteration (by association with rake (n.1) and Hell) of Middle English rakel (adj.) "hasty, rash, headstrong," probably from raken "to go, proceed," from Old English racian "to go forward, move, hasten," of unknown origin. Cf. rakeshame (n.) "one who lives shamefully" (1590s).
Ambrose is one of those men you absolutely hate until he does something so beyond anything you believe he is capable of, and then, you wonder why you didn't like him in the first place. And yes, I am guilty of just that. Ambrose is a "Rake" and just being seen with him could sully a woman's reputation. (Boy have times changed...LOL) When he sees a wager in the betting books over the seduction and ruination of the daughter of his father’s best friend, he knows he must intervene so he signs his name as the one who will do it. I'm not sure how he had planned for it to play out but I can guarantee that the way it did play out wasn't at all in his thoughts.
Alex has no idea that someone has placed a wager on her public ruination, all she knows is that her heart had been broken years earlier and she has no plans of ever falling for a man again. When Alex met Ambrose she had no idea what his true intentions were.
“Stay with me,” Alex begged, stroking the arm around her waist. He was holding on to her from behind as they lay on their sides, bodies pressed together perfectly like a pair of spoons nestled in a drawer. Ambrose nuzzled her ear, placing a soft kiss there. “There’s no place I wish to be but here.”
I really liked the chemistry between Alex and Ambrose, I also enjoyed the way Alex was true to herself. She knew what she wanted and she knew the outcome of what would happen but she didn't let that sway her at all, the girl was gutsy that's for sure.
The Rakehell's Seduction is the second book in the Seduction series but you can read it as a standalone if you wish, you will not be lost at all, but you may want to know more about the secondary characters, if that is the case you should read "The Duelist's Seduction" first which is Helen and Gareth's story.
