The Opposite of You (The Opposites Attract Series Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.3 4.3 out of 5 stars 1,858 ratings

I’ve sworn off men.

All men.

Famous last words, right? You’re expecting some epic tale of reluctant love and my dramatic change of heart? Well, you’re not going to get it.

I’m stubborn. And headstrong. And I’ve just survived the worst three years of my life. After escaping an abusive boyfriend to live in hostels and cheap hotels while I worked my way across Europe, I’ve come to two conclusions.

The first? Now that I’m back home, I’m going to squander my expensive culinary degree on a food truck that caters to the late night drunk crowd.

The second? I’m going to prove to the bastard across the plaza that my street food is better than his fussy five course monstrosities.

Killian Quinn might be Food and Wine’s Chef to Watch Out For. He might have a Michelin Star. He might have every food critic in the city wrapped around his too-large fingers. But he’s also pretentious and unbearably arrogant and the very opposite of me.

So he can keep his unsolicited advice and his late night visits and his cocky smiles. I want none of it. Or him.

I want the opposite.

Review

"Higginson juxtaposes emotion with humor and delivers fantastic dialogue with a lovable set of characters that readers will be excited to read about in future books." - USA Today Happy Ever After "This contemporary romance novel stands out brilliantly amongst its peers, and is the STAR of my reading month. And year. And now officially one of "those" forever favorites that I will always squee about. There's just some magic about this one. This story, these characters, the pacing, the flow, the wit, the emotion and the dialogue... this author pulls it all together like it's real life, and I'm a fly on the wall wishing I was her." - Maryse, Maryse's Book Blog "5 stars" "An entirely character-driven story start to finish, with meticulous focus on detail and a steady and measured pace that allows the reader to savour the careful development of character to the fullest, Rachel Higginson casts a spell with the deftness and poignancy of her prose, leaving us mesmerized by her every thoughtful sentence. It is evident that the author takes palpable pleasure in crafting characters that stay with the reader long after their story is done, exploring their inner struggles, and only pointing them towards a way to overcome them. The result is a compelling plot that is both absorbing and entertaining, and one I will undoubtedly revisit often in the future. I cannot recommend this book highly enough." - Natasha, Natasha is a Book Junkie "6 stars""Every interaction crackled with tension and chemistry and from the very first pages, I couldn't get enough, couldn't read fast enough. The story of Vera and Killian shines brightly and I adored every word." - Vilma, Vilma's Book Blog "5 stars" "...I was seriously just floored, I have SO MUCH LOVE for The Opposite of You...it's not just the smart witty banter. Ms. Higginson writes some of the most beautiful lines I have ever read..." - Lenore, Celebrity Readers Book Blog

5 Second look at The Opposite of You by Rachel HigginsonA Quick SummaryVera is coming back home after escaping to Europe for a year, to open a food truck and try to make a small part of her dreams come true.Killian Quinn is a respected Michelin starred chef and doesn’t like the food truck that is parked too close to his restaurant. So, he tries to drive her off. But he likes her food and her talent. The competition heats up and they grow to be friends and Killian helps her heal from her ugly past.My Take on the Book :Love and Food. LOVED this book. A definite re-read.My Review of The Opposite of You by Rachel HigginsonLet's Talk About the Girl...“You’re someone that didn’t break beneath the weight of something so ugly.”Vera is coming back home. After traveling Europe for a year cooking from restaurant to restaurant, she had come home to take care of her dad and try to pick up the pieces of her shattered career and life. She is starting over with a food truck parted on her brother’s bike shop’s parking lot. She is trying to do what she loves–cook, but she doesn’t have enough self confidence to see her talent. Not yet. She graduated culinary school at the top of her class, but a series of misguided choices has left her broken and self confidence in shreds. This is all that she thinks she can have and as close to her dream as she thinks she will ever get. So, she is trying to make the most of it.Let's Talk About the Guy...Killian Quinn is a chef at the top of his game. He has worked hard to get where he is. The head chef at a national recognized restaurant with world class cuisine. So when some woman in a food truck parks her ugly thing a few yards from his restaurant, he isn’t having it. He has worked to hard to let a food truck take what’s his.Let's Talk about the Story...Vera has to come back to herself. Cooking is what saved her and it was going to be the thing that healed her now. Although her selfconfidence is shaken and could be thrown off by the tinyest thing, when Killian Quinn the Killian Quinn accosts her on her first day cooking in her food truck something snaps and she gives him as good as she gets…for the first time in a couple of years. Her past relationship with a up and coming chef as left her wrung out and she knows that she doesn’t need another guy like that in her life. And all chefs are like that–arrogant, awful, mean men. So why does she want Killian’s approval? Why does she care what he thinks of her food? Why does it bother her so much that he makes his staff go buy her food in secret to taste her delicious and inventive combinations of favors? It shouldn’t. Every night tastes her food and gets her his suggestions on how to improve it.As the months wear on, they become friends. He helps her with suppliers and she finally gets to taste his food. It’s a game they both love, but can’t bring themselves to admit. Both of them are falling for each other. Until one night, when the man that hurt Vera shows up to ask her to cook with him at his new trendy restaurant and continue where they left off. See SpoilersThis is a great slow burning love story that I’ve re-read a few times. It’s out now on Audible too! I love how the two of them grow closer together and it’s a slow, believable love that is at it’s core built on respect and affection. Killian pushes Vera to stop thinking so much and put something great on the plate and Vera reminds Killian of the job of cooking (not the work of a restaurant).‘It was up to us how we used those experiences. We could let them own us, or we could let them be the journey they were meant to be, the stepping stones to a better life, a better self. Each moment, good or bad, a tool to give us the strength we needed to be the person we were supposed to be.’

4.95 stars -- I got to beta read this book!!! And I was seriously just floored, I have SO MUCH LOVE for it, I can't even tell you. My hubby would come home from work to find me in my reading chair, with the biggest grin on my face. Like seriously you guys, I could have highlighted all of the dialogue in this book...it was just everything I love about a Rachel Higginson book.

And the thing is, it's not just the smart witty banter. (but I will come back and rave about that in more detail in a second) Ms. Higginson also writes some of the most beautiful lines I have ever read...even just a sentence that captures my imagination and really brings home whatever she's trying to convey about how Vera is feeling and seeing the world and herself. Because while I would say the predominant emotion I felt in this book was snortfully gleeful happiness and so much giddiness, there is a darker undertone to the story that addresses an important topic that face so many people (often women) -- mental/emotional abuse in a relationship (that can bleed into domestic violence on occasion). I think it's something that is hard for people who don't experience it to understand, and even harder for the victims to understand and make sense of. And I really believe that Ms. Higginson gives it a voice in Vera. While I don't personally have experience with this, I felt like Vera's journey was an authentic one. It was hard at times to be in Vera's head, and see how she felt about herself, but I thought it felt realistic. As with any story dealing with hard topics, it won't be everyone's journey, but one possible journey.

So that was long. ANYWAYS...what I think I was trying to say is that the story had a really nice balance between heavy topics and glorious light and sassy interactions. They blended perfectly, giving us a story that GIVES SO MUCH. And don't even get me started on the romance!! Seriously, I was gleeful. I'm neither here nor there on "enemies to lovers" type stories, but this one just...seriously, I can't even...it was just...LIKE SO MUCH tension and laughter and sass and adorableness and did I mention tension?? AHHHH!!!!

I wasn't sure what to think of Killian when we first met him, b/c wow...first impressions were not strong with this boy. But OMG, when you start to figure out as a reader what is going on with him, and where his heart is at, it's just so swoony! Especially b/c Vera is kind of oblivious (but it fits with her history and where her self esteem is at). But I so wanted to hug the crap out of that boy so many times. He's not my typical book boyfriend, but I'm seriously in love. What an odd, stoic, somewhat closed off, but capable of so much feeling guy....

It's funny, b/c I am a die hard lover of dual POV stories, but Ms. Higginson somehow manages to make me love a story with just one POV. I think a lot of that is because Vera has such a journey to go on, and so we needed to see her take that journey. But the other major part is that she's able to convey to me enough of what Killian is feeling that I don't feel like I missed too much not being in his head. Does that mean I don't want bonus scenes from his POV? Heck no! I DO. I REALLY REALLY DO. But they weren't necessary for me to fall in love and get where he was coming from.

And if you couldn't guess from all of the above, the star really is Vera. She made me laugh. She made me ache. She made me want to high five her all over the place. She made me want to hit my head against a wall. She made me love her.

The supporting cast in this story really helped in Vera's growth too, it wasn't just Killian. Her family is amazeballs, you could just feel the love. And Vera and Vann were such perfect siblings (again, so much laughing). And then there's Molly, the BFF. Oh Molly, you are da bomb. I am so intrigued where your own story will go, but I loved what you added to this story. And then there's Wyatt. Oh Wyatt, you freaking killed me. <3 <3 <3

So why not full 5 stars? Just a tiny personal preference. I'm super greedy and impatient about wanting to know everything IMMEDIATELY. And the details of her previous relationship were given in tiny bits as the story went along. Which is a valid storytelling choice, just not my personal preference.

(Oh, and this book had one of the best descriptions of how hard reviews are for the creator, regardless of whether they know that reviews are subjective and affected by the consumer's personal experiences/preferences).

And damn! The food! I don't even like peppers and I wanted those tacos (though she had me at grilled cheese). I know that makes no sense, but I totally believed the foodie stuff in this book. And at this point I'm just talking about everything.

So yeah, I know, gushy review. It's my right, I am a mega fan. But I'm an honest mega fan, and I can honestly say that this is everything I love about Rachel Higginson. And....mic drop.

Vera has returned home after a few years in Europe trying to escape and cook her way after an abusive relationship has ended. Her father is sick and she is back in town to help with his health and also decides to invest her savings into a food truck. This is not her dream but it's the best she can do until she can open a restaurant of her own.

Unfortunately the spot for her food truck is across the street from one of the trendiest restaurants in town and with one of the most sought after chef of the moment, Killian. The bearded chef is intense and arrogant in his cooking abilities but has the accolades to back it up. After tasting Vera's food the first night, he decides to dish out his unsolicited advice. Vera is not happy abut having to face what she hopes to have one day, every night from her food truck window.

She also doesn't like to be reminded of her worth with Mr. Killian in her face every night correcting her dishes. What starts off as a heated debate over salt slowly, turns into fun banter between the two, and what some may consider flirting. After Vera's relationship ended, she has decided to focus on her career for a while, but Killian has other plans. He wants to mix business with pleasure. Thankfully he is able to recognize Vera's hesitance and has the patience of an angel as she discovers that her worth is not based on the critics of her food.

If you are looking for a semi different story, with great characters then this is the book for you. It's quirky and light hearted (even while tackling the issue of abuse) and you'll breeze right through it. My only wish was that Rachel Higginson had included more dialogue between the characters. It's was so much fun when Vera and Killian would go at it back and forth. Be prepared to laugh while your stomach is growling as you read this book.

Y'all, I loved this book. I loved every little thing about it. I know there's no way my words will do it justice, but I can't NOT review it. It started off as one of those "Eh, I'll just read a few pages before bed" books that ended in a late night as I attempted to read as much as possible before I could no longer keep my eyes open. The writing was beautiful. I swear I highlighted half the book. The characters were real and believable, and their growth was wonderful. The build up for the romance was perfection. I can't say enough positive things about this one. It's easily one of my favorite books of 2017 and a new entry on my all-time favorites list.

Vera and Killian were absolutely amazing. While I may not have been through some of the things Vera has, I found it so easy to relate to her. She was talented, but vulnerable. Her self-doubt was almost overwhelming at times. It was a beautiful thing to watch her begin to overcome it. She might not have recognized it sometimes but she was so very strong and smart. Killian was the perfect person to help make her believe in herself and her talents again — even if he went about it in a rather unconventional way at times. Killian himself was incredible. I'll admit I side-eyed him and questioned his intentions in the beginning, but it didn't take long before I was swooning and singing his praises.

It probably comes as no surprise that I was rooting for Vera and Killian from the very beginning. I'm such a shipper. I mean, I don't read this much romance for nothing. I loved their antagonistic banner early on in the book. They made me laugh and smile as they picked at each other. When that turned into an unlikely friendship, with a hint of something more, I was happy. When their true feelings came out, I was there for it. I loved watching them grow individually while they realized how special what they had together was. It was swoony, sexy and romantic, with a delicious slow burn that had to rival Vera and Killian's creations. I couldn't get enough of them, but I also didn't want the book to end.

This is the first of Rachel's books that I've read, but it absolutely won't be the last. I've already pre-ordered the second book, The Difference Between Us, and it can't get here soon enough. I'm dying for more of the story between Vera's best friend Molly and Killian's brother Ezra. I was intrigued by both characters in this book and I NEED more of them. In the meantime, I'll be adding all of Rachel's books to my wishlist and reading them when I can make time. I have a new author to love!

I simply love this book! I’ve reread it so many times! One of my favorite books ever. The main characters, both chefs, are great and the dialogues are sometimes so funny that I’ve picked myself laughing out loud more than once.

Wow, this book was really good! I couldn’t put it down! I found some inner monologues a bit repetitive, but I ADORED both the main couple and the side characters. I can’t wait to read the other books in the series!

I adored this book and more than anything I have a serious crush on the hero, Killian. He's a grumpy, sometimes rude genius chef but this man is so wonderful through all of that. I had a crush on him early on and it just got worse and worse. This book is aided by such a likeable heroine, Vera. She was on a journey, finding her strength, self esteem and realigning her life goals. The chemistry was wonderful.

I adore the cover and the story lived up to it. I dropped it half a star because I just wanted a little more towards the end but I am mostly satisfied. I cannot wait for book two because Ezra and Molly are going to sizzle, I can just tell.

This book was bloody great! I loved the evolution of Killian and Vera's story, they were both funny, actually really sweet and had amazing chemistry. I really liked that Killian seemed awful, but actually just really liked Vera and seemed to want the best.
The writing of Vera's family was excellent, as was Killian's colleague Wyatt - I really hope Wyatt gets his own story! Molly was a great best friend and Ezra was quite the enigma and I'm counting down to their story! I just found this such an easy book to read - I laughed out loud numerous times, it was too angsty and as a reader, I just knew it would have a nice ending.
