Classic Star Wars ship, a large set, one of the best Star Wars Lego sets at this price point
I bought this classic Y-wing set for my son and we had an absolute blast building it. I can’t remember having this much fun with any of my kids’ toys before, but of course I should mention that I am a Star Wars geek at heart! When I went Legos shopping for my son’s birthday, I really wanted one of the “classic” Star Wars sets, and by that I mean one of the ships that appeared in the original movies and I have a sentimental attachment to, yet I didn’t want to spend over about $50. I can’t tell you how much I want to build a Millennium Falcon or the Death Star, or even an X-Wing with my son, but I just can’t justify spending so much money on one of those huge sets, as cool as they do look! I picked up this set for about $43, and I see that it retains for $59.99 which is about 30% off. The good Legos sets don’t really go on sale very much, so this is pretty good value. As soon as I found this set I knew it was the right one! Here are a few things that I love about this set:- It’s one of the “classic” Star Wars space ships I remember from my childhood- While not a huge set, it’s not a small one either, despite the reasonable price…it includes lots of mini figures (6 in total if I remember correctly), 6 bags of pieces, and nearly 700 pieces, all of which was important for my son- This set was super fun to build, super fun to play with, and the best part of all is that it looks cool on my desk when he’s not playing with it : )A few observations:- You really do need to pay attention to the age recommendations. It’s so tempting for parents to choose the “older” sets because they tend to be bigger and more complete, but a younger kid may end up getting frustrated with a set that is over his/her head. I’ve learned the hard way in the past that my son can get frustrated when he can’t figure out the instructions.- Here’s a small pitfall that we fell into: you get about 10 “struts” of pieces that look like poles, 4 long ones and about 6 short ones. Make sure you match up the sizes with the true to scale illustration! My son used one of the long ones in the interior of the ship and so when he got the end he didn’t have enough. It took us the longest time to backtrack our steps and figure it out, so be careful!- It sure would be nice if they included some sort of simple display stand, you know, for holding it up when it’s not being played with. Here’s my recommendation… if either the parent or the child is a Star Wars fan, you can’t go wrong with this classic Y-wing set. It’s reasonably priced, it’s one of the larger, more complete sets I’ve seen for under $100 (let alone under $50), and best of all, it’s a Y-wing!!! Happy building!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great set, great value, great fun!
Reviewed in the United States on April 2, 2017
GREAT set. Of all the recently released rebel ships this one is the best executed and most "realistic," plus it's a very fun build its own right. It's definitely a lot bigger than I thought it would be - it's actually about as big as the U-Wing set, which itself is under-scale (and this Y-Wing might be a bit over-scale?). This is a substantial set that is a great addition to the collection and looks great on display. Also, what a great price! Almost 700 pieces for under $60? The initial MSRP for the TIE Striker, with like 550 pieces, is something like $70 or $80! Great deal on this one. BUY IT!

There are few cons to this set, but I think they aren't really a problem.
    - The minifig selection is not the most interesting, and technically the pilot is wrong. I swapped him for one with an orange jumpsuit. The pilot that comes with the set is identical to the (Blue Squadron) pilot from the U-Wing set, helmet and all.
    - The spring loaded shooters are not well integrated, so I did not build them on and instead did some customized shaping on the bottom of the cockpit to bring the look together.
    - The cockpit itself is pretty spare, but has lots of room for you to customize it to your liking. Add some more info panels, give the pilot a better seat, etc.
    - The one real drawback is that the front landing gear is pretty weakly attached with just a single 1x2 plate. It may fall off on you.
    - Very few stickers. In fact the only stickers on the ship itself are 4 large, identical panels that you stick onto the engine nacelles. Because these are larger they are very easy to line up correctly, versus those horrible tiny stickers so small that you can't see what you're doing. However, if you choose not to put these on, the model will look incomplete.
    - The ammo lift/loader is fine, but nothing all that interesting. It's not the main event so I won't dock points for it.
