Review

Reads like a full blown mystery that will keep you on the edge of your seat. This is an expansive novel that stretches across oceans and philosophies, making it an addictive read for anyone who appreciates clever writing and heartfelt narratives. That is the sign of a truly great book and a very talented writer." SPR Review Dec'16

The novel centers on the real-world wonders that certain people are able to achieve through kindness, compassion, patience and self-sacrifice. Perhaps there is such a thing as divine intervention and the gentle nudging of God, but the tangible miracles of good-hearted humans are often even more powerful. The end of this novel will leave readers uplifted and refreshed - spiritually, emotionally and philosophically - regardless of one's particular religious' beliefs or opinions. That is the sign of a truly great book, and a very talented writer." SPR Review - 2017

I was inspired by so many aspects of this book, I had a hard time putting it down. There were so many parts that I could relate to and believe due to my own faith. I cried so many times I lost count. This is probably one of the Best books I have read in years.

It shows that miracles and Devine interventions that occur daily go unrecognized. As I read I felt like I was in the room with the characters experiencing the events and felt the awe of each miracle. Brought me to tears of joy

This book is hard to explain but for me it was well worth the read. It compares the life of an an orphan baby boy born during the appearance of Haileys Comet in Galway Ireland; to the life of Jesus.
There were many similarities-- but the growth of this boy brought in new people and situations.
This book has a little everything for everyone..Murder, Love, Marriage, and Kidnap.. This book made each person believeable and made me want to know how it was going to end --- and the ending was abrupt --- or was it????

I needed an easy read because I was home recuperating from a fall in which I broke my arm. I did not want anything too intricate. The title caught my eye and I decided to try it. I am so happy that I did. This book was thoroughly enjoyable. A little mystery, a little love story, a little church mystique and a lot about how we handle problems that happen to come our way. I will be enjoying more from this author for sure.

Theme was transparent ,once the miracles began it was fairly obvious, but he wove the characters in nicely. The love interestt was unsatisfactory since all the sacrifice left the young woman with nothing.

Not being at all religious (or Irish!) I did wonder if this book would really capture my interest. How wrong could I have been! A thoroughly enjoyable and engaging read. Humour, emotion, drama and a little bit of Irish quirkiness - this book has it all. We could all do with a Sean Robinson in our lives. Looking forward to the sequel. Highly recommended.

With no foreknowledge of the author, I picked this book up because of the title. It didn't get set back down until I was complete, because it was easy to read, interesting, and exciting. The story of Jesus in modern terms-well written. Whether you are religious or not, you will enjoy this book.

This was very interesting, and I immediately read the sequl. The level of 'religiousity' was comfortable - not overly evangelical.

Great read! This is the first of Donnelly's books I have read. It is uplifting. Having changed from Roman Catholic to Episcopalian myself, I found much to entertain but more to think about. I see the Gospels in today's world as meaningful and appropriate. Thank you. Look forward to the next book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Not to be missed, looking forward to sequel
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on February 14, 2017
This was a surprisingly good 'read'. Having read the author's first book, I was expecting a similar 'auto-biographical' type of book. However I was greatly surprised by the content, pace, connectivity and, indeed, spirituality of 'Maybe God was an Irishman'! The book starts with current events and then reverts to being a chronicle of the lives of various characters through the boom and bust years of the Irish economy. It shows an in depth knowledge of the effects of the worldwide recession from 2008 to present day on, mostly, rural Ireland in general, but specifically on how the recession affected and effected the characters. The main characters were all very well developed to the point where the reader could identify specifically with each. The details of their development reminded me greatly with the way Jeffrey Archer developed his characters in the recent series 'The Clifton Chronicles'. The seamless way in which the author ties the life and times of each character into the present day is remarkable, and the question left unanswered at the end leaves the reader avidly looking forward to the sequel, again, just like Jeffrey Archer. This is a book well worth reading, not only for the entertainment value, but also for the spiritual and emotional message which pervades the story. I could not put it down!! Well Done, and well worth the 5 Star review.

4.0 out of 5 stars On the fence really!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 4, 2018
I enjoyed this book and although at times my "suspension of disbelief" was really put to the test, it was a page turner. I wasn't over keen on the ending and now have to read the sequel (which Mr Donnelly promises) to find out what happened next. I look forward to the next installment but cannot find any information regarding when that will be published. I will recommend it to fellow readers even if it's just to get their opinion of it because I am still on the fence!

5.0 out of 5 stars Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Donnelly's first book

Having read and thoroughly enjoyed Mr. Donnelly's first book, Dear Daughter, I was eagerly awaiting this second book from him. While it is a totally different style of book, it still has the relaxed easy read that I like. I was very curious to see how exactly he would end such a storyline in a modern book, but I was not disappointed. Am normally very fussy about the style of book I read and I must say I really am enjoying his writing.

As a college student I was quite skeptical about reading this book at first but I have to say I really enjoyed this book. The author's use of great character development and intricate story lines makes for a great read. Furthermore, this book is full of clever hidden meanings throughout which are interesting to discover and enhance the story greatly. I give this book a 5/5 and look forward to reading the next book of the series.
