Sharpness seems excellent, not unlike other Sigma ART lenses, of which I have two to compare. Autofocus is fast for f/1.4, but that was only tested indoors as I don't use AF for astrophotography, but from my quick back and forth tests with my kids, the AF seemed fast and accurate.
The bokeh is superb. Again, not something you'll typically worry about with astrophotography, but in my indoors tests, the bokeh was very smooth and uniform. I didn't own the previous version of this lens, but apparently this was a major complaint of the earlier version. This was really nice.
Overall, the lens performed very very well for my use case. I was doing about 15 second exposures with acceptably sharp stars on a Nikon D810 (20 seconds in a pinch). Be warned, it is bulky and heavy, and the front element protrudes so you can't apply threaded filters to this lens, which for me makes it astro specific, but I have other lenses I can use with filters for general landscape work.
This lens is kind of an astro shooter's dream lens.
The auto focus is spot on with my EOS R. And very rarely misses, even at 1.4.
The front glass is bulbous and prevents a person from putting on an ND filter on the front. However, I put on a rear filter adapter and it works just fine. I don’t have one, but Canon makes the rest mount ND filter for the EOS R. This uses a variable filter.
There is NO noticeable comma at even wide open, f-1.4. Only if you zoom in at 100%, you can see slight streaking at edges, but when you present your photos, there is no way for viewer to see it.
The combination of wide-angle with wide-open aperture is absolutely unique and cuts down the amount of work astro-photographers have to do. Normally you would do panos for Milky Way and then separate panos for foreground, and then task of aligning stacking everything due to noise, and then aligning and then merging with fg. That takes hours to shoot and even longer to process.
With this lens, you don't have to worry about noise in sky as ISO can be reasonably low, and it picks up enough area that for most scenes need for pano is eliminated. Since you can pick up light fast, for most scenes, even 30 seconds is enough for separate foreground exposure.
However, it is still better to do a long exposure for foreground as higher ISO shot would not have same quality as long exposure at low ISO. Except with this lens, you don't have to do 20 minute exposures. The f-1.4 cuts it down significantly.
WHAT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT?
Well, the corners are SOFT. Meaning if you put something with texture in your corners, then it would look fuzzy and out of focus. One simple way to deal with it is to crop it out. However, then it distorts your comp.
Best way is to not put stuff with texture in corners (sand, water and sky are good candidates for subject in corners, tress and rocks are not), and if you do need it for your comp, then take separate exposure for the corners where the subject is sharp and then later on blend that back in your image.
Money well spent! I only have Canon lenses in my arsenal, but proud to day this is a great addition. Bravo Sigma!

Build quality:
As expected for a lens of this price, the build quality is excellent. The materials feel premium and overall it is well-designed. It might be a bit heavy compared to similar lenses, but what you have to remember is that this lens is filled with quality glass. Sadly it's not weather sealed, which may put a few people off buying it, but this has never really bothered me as I never intended to use it in the rain. My only gripe is that the aspherical element can't be protected with a filter. However, the fixed lens hood does provide good protection from the odd knock or bash.
Performance:
Again, you get what you pay for. The performance of the Sigma 20mm F1.4 Art is superb. With a maximum aperture of F1.4 the lens really shines in low-light situations, especially if you're shooting astrophotography. Shooting at F1.4 also gives you some really nice bokeh too, especially when close to your subjects. Autofocus is fast and quiet, and the focus ring is also smooth and quiet. I've seen a few reviews regarding back and front focusing, or missing focus altogether, but in my experience I've never had this problem. Just remember that if you are shooting at F1.4 you are dealing with such a shallow depth of field that the slightest movement will shift the focus.
Image quality:
The image quality on the Sigma 20mm F1.4 Art lens is outstanding. Just like the other Art lenses, the images are sharp and crisp. I found that stopping down to F2.8 is the sweet spot for this lens. Shooting at the widest aperture also produces sharp images too, but pushing the lens to this limit does incur a tiny bit of softness. However, this is not really noticeable unless you really zoom into the image. Likewise, shooting at the smallest aperture does incur a bit of softness due to diffraction. Vignetting is also apparent at the widest apertures, but this is easily corrected in Adobe Lightroom. I've not really experienced much chromatic aberration with this lens, but it does happen once in a while depending on what I'm shooting. Again, easily corrected in Adobe Lightroom. There is also a tiny bit of lens distortion, but nothing too detrimental.
Overall the Sigma 20mm F1.4 Art is an absolutely outstanding lens. As previously mentioned, it's currently my favourite lens to shoot with. I've never been too keen on ultra-wide lenses given the fisheye effect, so the 20mm focal length is ideal for me. Apart from a few minor gripes, the lens is near perfect, and is a must-have for astrophotography. I would highly recommend buying the accidental damage protection given the exposed aspherical element. Better to be safe than sorry! However, if you look after it well, you'll have no problems. After a year of use, there are no marks or scratches on the element or lens itself. The Sigma 20mm F1.4 Art lens will remain my favourite lens until I find something better, which might take a long time!
Pros:
- Excellent build quality
- Superb performance
- Outstanding image quality
- Fixed lens hood for protection
- A must-have for astrophotography
Cons:
- Heavy when compared to similar lenses
- No weather sealing
- No option to add a filter to protect the front element
