Product Description
We see a future built on great brands, great products and great people. In every facet of our business we leverage the strengths of our global infrastructure to maximize the benefits of all three.
Amazon.com
Ideal for home shop use, the JET 708457DXK JJ-6CSDX 6-Inch 1 HP Jointer with Quick-Set Knive System squares your wood without fail. Offering one of the longest working surfaces in its class, and featuring an exclusive auto-set quick change knife system that lets you quickly replace or change all three blades, this powerful jointer helps you build doors, tabletops, and other furniture pieces with ease.
All-Enclosed Steel Base Cabinet for StabilityThe JJ-6CSDX comes with an all-steel enclosed base cabinet. An integral tab at each end of the cabinet bottom makes it easy to secure the jointer to the floor whenever a suitable surface is available. This cabinet also provides a stable platform and puts the table surface at a comfortable 31-1/4 inches above the floor.
Fan-Cooled Motor for Consistent Performance
The base cabinet also houses the 1 HP, 1 phase 115/230-volt TEFC (totally enclosed fan cooled) motor (pre-wired 115-volt) and wiring to help isolate those components from the dust-prone jointer environment. A large door on the rear of the base cabinet provides easy access to the motor, which spins the JJ-6CSDX cutterheads at a very consistent 6000 RPM for a desirable balance between speedy material removal and a silky-smooth surface on the wood.
Long Cast-Iron Table for Better Accuracy
The JET JJ-6CSDX features a long, cast-iron table with a smooth, flat precision-machined finish that keeps the wood sliding predictably while ensuring accuracy. Measuring 55-3/4 x 7-3/8 inches, this table makes straightening large project pieces accurate and reliable. Additionally, the overall cut capacity of 6-1/16 x 1/2 inches (WxD) can keep up with even the most active of home wood shops. Finally, the outfeed tables have built-in 1/2-inch rabbeting ledges that add a little more versatility to the jointer.
Handwheels for Easy Adjustments; Automatic Limiter for Safety
Both the infeed and outfeed tables feature Jet's exclusive front-mounted handwheels to make table height adjustments easy and accurate. And for safety and protection, an automatic limiter on the infeed table prevents the operator from accidentally taking overly aggressive cuts deeper than 1/8 inch. For added convenience, the depth limiter can be manually overridden easily but requires the operator to intentionally release it.
Steel Cutterhead with Three Knives for Long Life
The JJ-6CSDX uses a precision-machined steel cutterhead fitted with three high-quality knives measuring 6 1/6 x 3/4 x 5/64 inches (WxLxD). These knives have two cutting edges that effectively double their life, and they are aligned using Jet's exclusive auto quick-set system. A pair of cams at each knife actually adjusts the knife height. Once set, the cams are locked in position and the knives can be reversed or replaced without having to reset the height, eliminating the need for a knife-setting gauge.
Additionally, precision-machined pockets in the knives let you slip them onto the cams, thus retaining the setting. The openings in the knives are also wide enough that individual knives can be offset to compensate for a nick, further extending the life of each knife edge.
User-Friendly Features for Easy, Pleasant Operation
Designed to be an easy-to-operate, helpful addition to your shop, the JJ-6CSDX features a two-way tilting fence with positive stops at 45 and 90 degrees to handle bevel operations, as well as industrial push-button controls conveniently placed for easy access. Finally, a built-in dust chute with four-inch port connects to your collection system for efficient dust and chip disposal.
The JJ-6CSDX measures 22 x 37.5 x 56 inches (WxHxD), weighs 237 pounds, and is backed by a five-year warranty.
About JET: A History of Sharing New, Feature-Rich Products
Opened in 1958 after the founder of the company, Leslie P. Sussman, took the first Boeing Jet Airplane trip from Seattle, Washington to Japan, JET began as a small dealer that sold air hoists and trolleys out of a single hardware store in Seattle. Over the years, JET has carried everything from snowmobiles, transmitter radios, and forklifts to nylon stockings, but by the early 1970s, metalworking had become the base of their business line. And by the 1980s, JET had expanded into the realm of woodworking. Today, you'll find that JET offers a wide range of popular woodworking tools that are backed with best-in-class features and excellent service.
What's in the Box
One stand with motor, one stand cover with mounting hardware, one dust chute with mounting hardware, one bed assembly, one fence assembly, one cutterhead guard, one belt guard, one V-belt, four 1/4-20 x 1/2 pan head screws, four 1/4 flat washers, one lock handle, flat washer and lock nut for the fence, one fence handle, three lock bolts, three 3/8-inch lock washers, two handwheel assemblies, one can of touch-up paint, manual, warranty card, and two push blocks.
From the Manufacturer
The New JET JJ-6CSDX 6-Inch Long Bed Jointer has the same features as the regular 708457K but with this Long Bed version you now have a bed length of 56-Inch for a better control and more accuracy. For longer material the longer the bed length the better. You still have the 3 high-speed steel knives in the cutter head and these are the new Quick-Set style so changing the knives is very easy and fast. The power is delivered by the 1horsepower motor, 115/230-Volt pre-wired at 115-Volt. The fence is 33-1/8-Inch long and you also have the two way action, stops at 45 and 90-Degree. Exclusive front mounted table adjustment hand wheels for quick, easy and accurate control. Heavy dusty one-piece steel closed stand with a built in 4-Inch dust port for efficient dust and chip disposal. Great new machine with longer bed and quick-set knives for more accurate jointer operation.

Delivery was a bit of a problem as Amazon didn't provide the trucking company with the correct phone number to contact us to schedule the exact delivery date. Once that was resolved, the delivery was smooth and efficient. My delivery guy came with a truck that had a lift gate, and a manual forklift so he unloaded it at the garage door and wheeled the pallet (two boxes shrink wrapped to a pallet) into the shop exactly where I wanted it. This is a heavy piece of equipment and it is best to have an extra set of hands on the day you are going to set it up. I am a rather large man so I did the set up by myself, but an extra set of hands would have made it much easier to move the parts around and put them together. Especially when you are picking up the bed assembly to attach it to the base. The base isn't all that heavy even though it comes with the motor installed, it can easily be moved into place. The fence assembly was pretty easy to install, and not too heavy. All together from the time I cut open the boxes, until I plugged it in for the first time I had a little more than two hours into it. Probably could have been done much quicker with an extra set of hands.
The fit and finish of the components overall was very good, and it went together without any issues. The positive stop at 90 degrees was spot on from the moment I put it together. The out feed table was aligned perfectly with the cutterhead/knives, so there was no need for any adjustment. It did take me a minute or two to master the out feed table adjustments and I do not like the positive lock for the 1/8" depth of cut. I understand why the manufacturer installed this feature to keep inexperienced woodworkers from trying to take too deep of a cut, but if you are not careful in the initial set up/use of it the positive stop can become 'wedged' in place and a pain to get back out. Be sure to pull the pin out and twist it from springing back into place before you play around with your depth of cut on the in feed table. I personally like to keep my depth of cut around 1/16" or less depending on what I am working with. Very rarely would I ever go to a full 1/8" depth, and so far the 1/16" rule of thumb is working very well.
My first run was with a piece of red oak, and it jointed the edge of the board perfectly. Next I stepped it up a notch to some hard curly maple and it did an amazing job on the face of the maple. Anyone who has planed or jointed curly maple knows how easily it will chip, and this jointer with it's brand new knives gave me a perfect face without any tear out or chipping. Since then I have been using it to clean up one face on my rough sawn white ash from the family property, and it is working to perfection. Exactly what I purchased it to do, so I am very happy with it so far.
Again, my only serious complaint about this machine is the rather heavy vibration, but I am going to play around with bolting it to the floor and see if that doesn't resolve the issue.
The bottom line on this machine for me is that the price fit exactly where I was at and it was worth the money. I would recommend it for any small hobby shop, but would probably go bigger and better if you are going for a more serious application than being a weekend woodworker. Another minor positive was that they included two hand held push blocks as an accessory, which definitely make face planing much safer. I was pleasantly surprised to find them in the box.
The jointer is substantial and well made. Mine is a slightly different model and stock number than ordered, but not a material difference. I called the company Jet, prior to fully unpacking, and they helped me to know exactly what I had. I also searched their web site and found the owner's manual, which was very helpful. The main problem was that printing had not kept up with changing product numbers, and it scared me a little.
For the home workshop the 6" jointer is probably the sweet spot. I looked at the 8" at Woodcraft, and they are a beast. I really like the cast iron construction for the bed and fence, which seem to be flat and true. The red finger shield is well shaped and functions correctly. I also like the turning handles on the front, that is a nice feature. I believe I read that there was no gauge to show the height of the infeed table, but mind does have a small gauge with measurement increments. This definitely works better than any portable or bench top jointer.
I have two minor grips. It would be nice if the on / off switch was higher and easier to reach - the larger models do have an extension up above the beds, and I can see why. Secondly, on the fence, just at the outfeed table, there is a slight recess covered with a plastic plate. I am not sure yet what it's purpose is, but if the wood is a little bent, the leading edge can snag on that tiny edge. One of the keys to nice planing is a smooth consistent motion across the blades, so the snag is a small problem. This only occurs on the wide side, when jointing the narrow edge
(holding the wide side against the fence) there is no snag at all. I could also be pressing the board too hard against the fence, so I am still learning.
The photo shows the very first set up and use, I have since added a simple vacuum system. Jointing does generate some large debris. I set up a simple (cheap) cyclone system into a large plastic bucket and powered by a small shop vac. I had to get a 4" to 2" hose adapter, and had to go into plumbing parts to get a 4" to 4" flexible adapter to attach the first one to the jointer. I was concerned that my vacuum would not be able to keep up with the jointer, but it does clear the debris shut and the vacuum hose very well. The plastic bucket fills pretty fast this way.
I am happy with this purchase, and hope to get many years of regular use out of it.
