Product Description
The New Nintendo 3DS XL system combines next-generation portable gaming with super-stable 3D technology and added control features. Take 3D photos, connect with friends, and enhance your gaming experiences with added amiibo support. The New Nintendo 3DS XL system plays all Nintendo DS games. Nintendo DS games will not appear in 3D. AC adapter sold separately. New Nintendo 3DS XL uses the same AC adapter as the Nintendo DSi, Nintendo 3DS and Nintendo 2DS systems. 3D Mode recommended for Ages 7+ Includes download code for Super Mario Kart (Super NES). Battery endurance: The battery endurance times are estimates. They will vary depending on factors such as the software being played, the amount of data received by wireless communication, and the ambient temperature. Using the camera features may also reduce the battery endurance times shown below. The screen brightness setting affects the battery endurance time. Keeping brightness at lower settings can prolong battery life. If you tap power-saving mode ON, screen brightness and color gradation will automatically adjusted to match the displayed images, and battery consumption will be limited even further. If you put the system in Sleep Mode when not using it, you can reduce power consumption while still being able to send and receive information from StreetPass and SpotPass via the wireless communication features. If the system is fully charged and put into Sleep Mode, the system’s battery endurance time in Sleep Mode is roughly 3 days. The power LED slowly brightens and darkens while the system is in Sleep Mode. NOTE: Depending on the software you are using, sometimes pushing the Sleep switch will not cause the system to enter Sleep Mode. In these cases the power LED will remain steadily lit. (For example, when listening to music with Nintendo 3DS Sound.).

Who is this 3DS aimed at? Those like me, who were gaming at the very end of the NES era and into the SNES one. It's a nostalgic throwback to my old Super Mario World days. The added free Super Mario Kart is another great throwback for me. I find myself looking at this 3DS sitting on my desk and remembering the click of the SNES power switch, hearing the spring in the reset switch that would get stuck every now and then, and feeling that slight plastic bend of the eject lever.
Now, I know you've seen some reviews stating that this is a TN screen. Yes. Yes, it is. And if you're not using IPS or VA for everything, you're not gonna notice a durn thing. If you do own a lot of IPS paneled devices, then aye, you will notice a little bit of washed out colors. Honestly, though, not enough to note ANY difference unless you throw them side by side. TN screens tend to be favored by gamers for low-latency. IPS screens are favored by artists and media enthusiasts who want full color accuracy. In my opinion, IPS is great in TV's for color accuracy and viewing angles and TN is good for solo gaming monitors and gaming devices.
As an afterthought, this system looks great with the Majora's Mask theme from the theme shop. The purple is a perfect match to the switches on the front and the two purple SNES controller buttons. Plus, the song of healing background music and Zelda 64 menu sounds are great. A little N64 nostalgia added to the mix.
Quick Thoughts / TL;DR
- Yes, the original 3DS charger is compatible.
- If the nostalgia is not for you or you never owned an SNES, get the cheapest one. 3DS XL go on sale a lot. Or get a theme you like.
- As far as I can see, there is no easy way to take out the SD card. Not sure if it's like this for all XL or just this one. It does have one, though.
- The code for Super Mario Kart is in the bag with the instruction manual.
- The stylus is not as snazzy as the original 3DS telescoping one.
- Gives about 5-7 hours solid play time depending on screen settings. Much better than the original.
- I don't expect the paint job to last forever.
Will update after some playtime.
Update:
After several days with the N3DS XL SNES I have a few additional thoughts to add.
Relative to a regular 3DS XL (should apply to all New 3DS units):
- the 3D face tracking is awesome. Much more effective 3D than the old units.
- the "C-stick" nub is a bit too stiff for my tastes but works fairly well and is definitely useful in games that support it.
- replacing the memory card isn't that difficult as long as you have a tiny screwdriver handy. Removing the cover is easy.
- I'm neutral on the new layout for the headphone jack and game cards.
Specific to the SNES unit I have:
- the top screen is very slightly crooked, tilted clockwise. It took me several days to notice and doesn't really bother me, but if I could take off half a star I would as that would definitely bug some people.
- Battery life seems great, noticeably better than my old unit, and the auto-brightness feature can be useful.
- The Blue battery LED is less bright than my old 3DS: this is VERY GOOD as the old one was blinding at night. I could literally light up a small room with it.
Overall, I'm very happy with my purchase. The included game download is nice (never had Super Mario Kart so it's not nostalgic for me) and I love the SNES aesthetic. Build quality is rock solid with the minor exception of screen alignment and the added features are very nice.
Top reviews from other countries
To top it off, there's a new stick that works like a Circle Pad Pro, again a welcome addition, the skin is rather cool and it comes with a download code for Super Mario Kart, which is a much harder game than its sequels.
