About Newair
Luke and Mariella Peters started Newair in 2001 with a desire to build a company based on their family values. This mission can be traced back to stories from the early days, such as when Mariella chased down a UPS truck, kids in tow, because the garage did not have a UPS pickup. She wanted to make sure customers received their orders on time. Newair, like its founders, has a “whatever it takes” mentality when it comes to customers.

Customers like the size of the ice maker. For example, they mention it's small enough to store when not in use, it looks nice in a modern kitchen, and it'll fit nicely on their countertop. Some say that it has more features than their old one and is totally portable. That said, most are happy with the size and functionality of the product.
"...And the Luma Comfort is totally portable. You can take it out on your deck or poolside for parties...." Read more
"...Luckily we had space right next to the sink for it... It's portable yes, but it's heavy and bulky, so near the sink so you can drain it easily is..." Read more
"...I also agree with all previous comments. The cubes are smaller than I would prefer and they do have holes in them...." Read more
"...It is a bit bigger with a 28lb per day ice capacity, and offers a bigger ice container than the previous counter top ice maker...." Read more
Customers are mixed about the quality of the ice maker. Some mention that it makes great ice, clear ice that lasts much longer than standard cloudy ice. However, other customers say that the icing can form a block frozen on to the mechanism, causing it to melt as soon as it is produced.
"...In my opinion, this creates the thickest and best ice. I have tried it by just pressing the on button and letting the machine do it's thing...." Read more
"...Since the ice maker doesn't keep the ice frozen, we have some sturdy storage bags to solidify the ice in our freezer then, once totally re-frozen,..." Read more
"...owned any previous stand alone ice makers but I find the quality of the ice acceptable as a substitute for the ice my refrigerator unit..." Read more

"...The Luma Comfort works perfect for my needs and I am sure you will be very happy with your purchase if you choose this ice machine." Read more
"...Why is this a con? Because the unit stopped working a month and a half after we got it, and it cost 65$, yeah SIXTY FIVE dollars to ship it back..." Read more

Customers are mixed about the noise of the kitchen product. Some mention it's very quiet, while others say the dropping of the ice and making a horrible noise. The water pump started making noise within the first month, the fan is not exactly quiet, and the noise is funny. The cooling fan rattles with the vibration of the compressor. It may not produce Sonic or crunch ice that we all love so much, but this bad boy gets the job done.
"...It does make some noise when the compressor is operating so placing it in a bedroom might not be advisable...." Read more
"...The not so pros: It's loud. Not jet engine loud, but you'll notice when it shuts off. It throws a bit of heat...." Read more

"This is absolutely the best ice maker for the price. It produces crystal-clear, restaurant-quality ice...." Read more
"...I figured this Luma unit was worth the small investment - provided it did make clear ice as advertised. So far so good!..." Read more

"...need to wash out the machine thoroughly because the insides will have dirt from manufacturing...." Read more
"...all sediments, making the Luma Comfort ice thicker and keeping the system clean...." Read more
"...Overall a good ice maker, but an absolute pain to clean. Change your water often and rinse out to help reduce the time in between major cleanings." Read more
"...It does however clean easier, no slime after 3 years just occasional hard black debris that I assume is coming off a part of the internal components..." Read more
Customers are dissatisfied with the water supply of the ice maker. They mention that it will just dump out where the sice is supposed to go, it won't pull water from the back to the front, and the water flow now comes out sporadically onto the freeze tray. There was a problem filtering reviews right now. Please try again later.
Think icicles: It produces clear ice by constantly flowing water over a chilled grid. The water freezes and impurities drain away. We bought one three years ago and it has been in constant service the whole time. The only problem is with the water. These impurities build up and eventually begin to clog the tubes supplying the water to the freezing grid, reducing ice size. Our solution was to buy a new Luma Comfort ice maker AND a Zero Water filtration system (https://www.amazon.com/stores/node/2581417011?_encoding=UTF8&field-lbr_brands_browse-bin=ZeroWater&ref_=bl_dp_s_web_2581417011 ). You'll be amazed at how much dissolved solids are in tap water. The Zero Water system filters out virtually all sediments, making the Luma Comfort ice thicker and keeping the system clean. Plus, with Zero Water you have the best drinking and cooking water you could ever hope for.
Since the ice maker doesn't keep the ice frozen, we have some sturdy storage bags to solidify the ice in our freezer then, once totally re-frozen, transfer to our freezer's ice dispenser.
We use the Zero Water digital TDS water testing meter to test the water in Luma Comfort's lower water reservoir and flush out the system when the water tests above 006.
To help accommodate flushing we attached a 1/2" OD vinyl water hose to the draining port on the back of the Luma Comfort with a cable tie for easy draining.
Earlier reviews siting design problems are obviously dated. Some of the reviewer-uploaded photos are different than the current model, making me think the manufacturer has made modifications to rectify the problems sited.
We couldn't be more pleased with this ice maker and can recommend it without reservation.
UPDATE 11/17/2014 I've had this ice maker for a year now and I'm lowering the rating I give it from four stars to only two. At the moment it is still making acceptable ice but there have been problems. The first was that a brown scum would accumulate in the area under the ice bucket. I assumed that some metallic part in the ice maker was rusting but it may be something else though I can't imagine what that would be. I cleaned that tank. Oddly the ice itself never seemed to be affected (no odd taste.) Then it began making ice that was too thick to eject into the bucket. I turned it off and allowed it to reach room temperature and then only partly filled the water reserve tank. That fixed that problem. Next the controller that limits the amount of water from the reserve each ice making cycle stopped working and all the water in the water reserve tank would flow into the tank under the ice bucket and flood the ice. Not good. Again I even more severely limited the amount of water I would put into the water reserve tank and also contrived to raise the ice bucket about an inch using small button magnets attached under the ice bucket to adjust the height. This last so I could use more water and not have to refill the tank as often. But about two months ago I discovered that the limiter problem has now cured itself (at least for the time being.) Now only the brown scum and thick ice problems remain but they are only intermittent. Still, on balance, I am glad I bought this system because the ice it makes has always been very good. I appreciate that building an ice making machine this compact is challenging. But no more than two stars for this one.
UPDATE 7/17/2017
The problem of keeping the unit clean became progressively more difficult. The brown scum continued to appear and must be rust from some part of the system that should be made of stainless steel. At times the residue in the bottom of the ice reservoir (that is, below the ice bucket) would take on an oily/slimy feel. I just wish they had put more thought into the materials that were in contact with the water. I finally sent the unit to the trash bin about a month ago. In the preceding four months I was needing to clean the unit every two weeks or so. And, although my taste buds aren't what they used to be, I believe I could detect an odd taste to the ice. I started to worry whether I was doing damage to myself using the ice. That together with the difficulty of keeping it clean led me to dispose of the unit.
Final conclusion - if you are willing to buy a new unit every couple of years this is the unit for you as initially I found the ice to be of high quality. But I would hope for more from such an appliance, maybe five years between replacement. So I've lowered the rating to (now) one star.

When set to make thick ice it really is thick. If you use the ice fast you may need an ice pick to break up with cubes. If you leave the cubes for 10 minutes the line between the cubes breaks up easy.
Cheers.
