Helmet has always captured the angst and pain of living in lying, greedy, duplicitous times. When most other bands are just putting out 'product' for market segments, Page and his crew hew to the harder, more real, more truthful moments in life. Sarcastic, wailing (voice and guitar), sneering: Page crafts songs that express disgust and anger that we all feel at times, listening to the news, dealing with idiots, going to bad jobs, etc. He is like some battered and bruised boxer, returning again to the ring of life's disappointments.
Monochrome showcases the trademark Helmet moves we've all come to love over the years, but it goes further in three key areas. 1.) Page has evolved into one of the best lyricists in indy rock, with moments of brilliance in at least half of these tracks, plus a reference to Alan Ginsburg's classic rebel poem "Howl". 2.) Page's voice has more emotive expression, depth, modulation now, as if he has purposefully treated it as an instrument on par with his guitar. 3.) The guitar solos on this disc are a thing of great beauty: they alone would be worth the price of the CD even without the high quality lyrics and vocals.
Think of Helmet not as the trendy grunge band they were portrayed to be in the 90s. Think of them as the modern equivalent of a great jazz band, riffing off life's stunning lies and maddening disconnects. Putting out a disc every now and then. Trying new things within their signature sound. Deepening their craft. Taking us along for the ride.
"swallowing everything
sinker, hook, and line
paralyzed, anesthetized
wasted, one more time"
"have you taken aim
found someone to blame?
does it make you feel better?
you're alright now, you're better.
whatever."

i am glad to have this album in my collection.
i bought my first helmet cd in 1993, meantime. since then i've seen them 3 times in concert and picked up everything i could find.
is it a loss to no longer have stanier on the drums? sure. he can never be replaced... but jost is a pretty damned good drummer in his own right, and fits better than tempesta.
as others have said this album has a more raw sound reminiscent of earlier recordings. i like it better than the production on either aftertaste or size matters.
what always surprises me about these types of reviews is that listeners seem to think that bands stay frozen in time, forever. people change, folks, and as long as bands are made up of people then the music will always change too. it's not something to be happy, or sad about.. it just IS.

Excellent album, has a few songs I didn't particularly like: Brand New, Gone. All the others were stupendous. Great comeback by Helmet.

The new one from Page and a revamped lineup finds Helmet revisiting some of the noise of Strap it On and Meantime. Mainly, the guitar solos are what stand out as the main link to those former great albums.
This one though, stands on its own as keeping the molody of Size Matters and the aggression of Meantime. Page brings more melody than he used to have but still finds a way to keep intensity for the most part. The new drummer should definately be commended for his contributions to the new-found ferocity.
The main fault of this album is some of the the vocals and lyrics, although Page was never really known for being great in that area. Lyrically, I think Meantime and Aftertaste were Page's high point. Besides that, I haven't seen much......then again, lyrics are not why one becomes interested in Helmet. I'm giving this one a 4.5. A step below Strap It On, Meantime, Betty and Aftertaste. Above Size Matters.

This album is helmet reborn. Sure, Page Hamilton is the only original member, and played most of the instruments on the album, but it doesn't matter. What does matter is that this is the sound of Helmet, back and born again. That is why it is not a Page Hamilton solo effort (plus this name probably draws more money/respect). The mixing of the vocals is a little rougher, not as manipulated on past albums, a little rougher, showing his years. However, the melodies and bass lines are what make the music Helmet. The same crunch and stops as before, like machinery grinding. Awsome album, pick this up. Very reminiscent of the MEANTIME days with a bit of STRAP IT ON/BORN ANNOYING.
Highlights: Bury Me, On your Way Down, brand new, Gone, Howl
Bonus tracks available-Requeium-Exclusive Download from large retail electronics store Descent track, but not fitting into this album, not worth paying more for if you have a good price elsewhere, unless you are OCPD like me and a collector.

Il migliore dai tempi di Aftertaste
Reviewed in Italy on September 28, 2023

Sharply observed lyrics fast jangling chords powerful chasing bass lines and hard hitting powerful drum patterns This is Helmet doing what they do best producing enjoyable highly creative original songs working in a new metal / punk arena This cd along with Size Matters where the two albums produced following re forming This new found enthusiasm and energy can be felt as this reinvigorated band rip through the songs on this release This band should be receiving greater acclaim than they do but don't be put of Buy this / play it and wear your Helmet with pride

...was obviously never in posession of ears in the first place. You like Betty AND Size Matters? Betty was superb but Size Matters was a horrible made-for-radio Hamilton-pension-plan piece of poo.
This is MUCH better.
The off-kilter riffs and angry sound make a welcome return and although Page's vocals have changed (and I miss the old style)I think they work ok with the new guitar tunings.
I've got to say though that Bury Me (aka Every Single Word) and Money Shot sounded better on the Gandhi demos. Just the production though, they're good songs.
It could have been a lot worse. It could have sounded like the appalling Institute album Page produced and Chris Traynor played on.
