I set the kit up as directed and decided to do “lazy gardening” by just filling once and letting it do its thing. When I put in the coconut coir pellets, I made sure one flat side was down. I wasn’t careful to make sure it was the right side as I couldn’t tell top from bottom. Didn’t matter; they expanded nicely in hot water. I broke them apart and fluffed with a bamboo skewer when they started to grow, and they filled their compartments. I didn’t press down on them. In the past, I’ve followed instructions that said compact the growing media, but I just let this stuff stay fluffy. Definitely use hot water and pour directly over them.
I planted 1 seed (or accidentally 2) in each cell so I could monitor the germination rate of the seeds, poured warm water to fill up the bottom, put the lid on loosely, and simply looked at it once a day. The rest was all due to this kit and the seeds.
The Pros: (1) it really works to germinate seeds. (2) self-watering actually works without roots getting wet feet. (3) I haven’t filled it a second time, and the reservoir is still half full 6 days later, but the growing medium is evenly wet. (4) it is compact and sits on a counter or small table just fine. (5) the coconut coir growing medium is sterile - no fungus gnats - and coconut holds water at the perfect level for seed germination.
The Cons: (1) it is flimsy. If you crinkle a cell, that cell won’t self-water, which makes it useless. I don’t think it’ll last past a couple uses, even if I’m gentle. (2) the lid doesn’t sit on the top well. It falls down, falls off, and is a royal pain, but it works when you place it just right and don’t touch it. Good news is you only need it 3-4 days. (3) it’s difficult to move when full of water. (5) the individual cells are small so seedlings need to be potted up pretty quickly.
Do I recommend? Absolutely. If the goal is seed germination, this does the trick.
