I went out yesterday and took some landscape shots, macro shots, wildlife shots (heron killing snake) and even portraits of a dog. When I pixel-peep I can see this lens is not tack sharp, but it still matches or beats all the other lenses I listed above. I have sold my two Sony zoom lenses already.
The first thing I noticed about this lens is how small it is. It sticks out about 1/2" further than the Sony 18-135mm and is an inch shorter than my 2nd-hand 70-300mm Sigma zoom. It looks and feels great when mounted on my A65. Build quality is good. It feels well made and everything feels precise. It has a lock to stop zoom creep but that doesn't happen. Maybe it will after more use. The zoom is stiffer than some I've used but not overly so. Maybe it will be loosen up.
The focus is internal so nothing on the outside moves when you focus. It is quiet and fast. Once or twice it had difficulty when I focussed on two flowers at slightly different distances and it jiggled between them. When you use most zooms as Macro lens, you have to stand-off from the subject. With this lens I could get as close as 6" at 16mm. More remarkably, at 300mm, I could get as close as 3" between the UV filter and the subject (I tested on a barcode). So this lens does a great job as a macro lens.
I'm not worried about optical distortion; not that I noticed any given my subjects. I shoot RAW and process using DXO Optics Pro 9. They are very good at updating their database of optical lens corrections for camera/lens combinations. While this lens and my A65 are not yet supported, I have no doubt they will be.
I could have saved myself a lot of time and money if I had simply selected this lens as my only lens for the A65. As it is, I will probably sell my prime macro lens and my Sigma 70-300mm zoom. As a walk-around lens that covers a wide variety of shooting situations, this lens is the enthusiasts' dream lens.
Update:
I updated my A65 to an A77mii and suddenly this lens is tack sharp! It is like this lens was made for A77mii.
After much dilly-dallying i decided to buy this lens with half mind. the pivoting point was due to my upcoming vacation, boy was i glad. the lens is versatile with the amount of zoom it provides and add to that is has a wider angle at 16mm compared to the 18mm standard. i am not a pro, but know a few things and tricks about DSLRs after having used them for close to a decade. even though this lens is known to have chromatic aberrations at the longest zoom i think its worth it if you are looking to carry one lens that fits most situations. of course there is a small price to pay for the versatility this lens offers. the image stabilization is a real good improvement especially at longer zoom when compared to my previous 18-200mm lens.
Overall a definite buy for DSLR enthusiats who are looking for one size fits all lens.

Very well packed no chance of damage. Really excellent service.
1) The zoom creeps, if the camera is held vertically. It has a zoom lock, but this only works if the lens is fully retracted.
2) Chromatic aberration is often noticeable towards the edges of shots. However, I can usually remove this in PP.
