Great option lens to take great photos, with less equipment, yet not look like a photo enthusiast!
Part of taking great photo's is having the camera and lens with you when your eye captures a photo opportunity. This lens has quickly become my main, or back-up in my camera bag. It is perfect for travel, and hiking. I cannot tell you how many times I pack one lens that seems perfect for what I want to shoot, and find I need another. Having this in my travel bag gives me the opportunity to capture most moments, and since sand is often close by, I can usually capture most photo moment without allowing sand to get into my equipment. I bought it (and only this lens) for a cruise, trip to Florida, visit to Mexico, and left my other lens equipment behind. For a new enthusiast this was hard to do. My girl appreciated the fact I was able to capture every key event well, but welcomed that I was not taking time from her to work with, carry, and store all my equipment in our small cabin. If you want to take great photo's well, without getting your loved ones mad at you for spending more time with your Canon then them, then this is a good call because the focal length allows you to do so much. It is expensive, but cheaper then a divorce! It actually rivals my excellent more specific use small focal length lenses. It will not replace your zoom or macro lens. But it is a must have for those that like to hike, travel, or like to have a camera available for that special unexpected moment.

I switched from the SAL(Tamron) 18-250mm to this 16-300mm lens for my Sony a77-M2 - and I was blown away by the better quality of this lens. It's exceeded my expectations. If you're looking for an all-in-one walk around lens I think you'll be more than happy. There is some chromatic aberration at some focal lengths (especially at 16mm) and some softness at the long focal lengths - but both are easily corrected in image processing. I've attached a few sample snaps (16mm and 300mm) and close up macros. The rock the barnacles are attached to is about 1.5" long.
