About Purex
A Pure Beginning
Like many great beginnings, Purex began in a garage…
Starting in the family garage, father and son cleaning team, Lionel & Roy used a homegrown recipe to create a pure bleach product packaged in amber pint jars to sell at a non-inflated 15 cents each. It was 1922, and a jar of bleach would typically cost 25 cents. But, Lionel and Roy were determined to provide their quality product to pass savings back to American families. Their homegrown liquid bleach soon found success and was dubbed Purex due to its clear, pure qualities and ability to make the household clean and healthy. Over the years the family worked to expand Purex with a focus on creating useful, everyday need inspired products offered at a non-inflated cost because of their commitment to providing a savings. Quality products has kept Purex in homes across America, throughout the Great Depression to present, as a quality clean that everyone can afford. Now part of the Henkel family, Purex has not lost sight of who we are: our innovative approach to providing a smart value, commitment to quality and passion for creating awesome laundry supplies still shapes all that is Purex.

Let me just set the record straight though. This DOES NOT make silly putty. Sure, it makes a putty like substance that may or may not be silly, but it bares no resemblance to actual, store bought, Silly Putty. I was obsessed with silly putty as a kid and, to this day, have a collection of the stuff. (I literally have over 300 eggs of it) so I do consider myself a bit of an expert.
The gooey paste you make with this is closer to that of gak. Which is still pretty cool, but nothing like that of the all powerful Silly Putty.
You can't really shape and mold this stuff, unlike store bought Silly Putty.
This stuff dries out, unlike Silly Putty. (I have silly putty that's been in the open air for the last 20 years and it's every bit as pliable as it was brand new)
This stuff bounces, sure, but nothing like Silly Putty.
So to make a long story...um...long, if your kid (or you for that matter) has never experienced the real deal, then go ahead and make this stuff and even and call it "silly putty". But then just hope and pray that your child is never given a real Silly Putty egg because then you'll be faced with the reality of explaining to him or her why the "silly putty" the two of you made on craft night is nothing compared the glory that is Silly Putty.
Don't get me wrong, this is still a positive review and this starch works great to create a gak like substance. It's just not Silly Putty. So keep your expectations under control.
I've used this with my kids a dozen times, and even brought it in as a volunteer to make slime with my kids' class. Works great. This + Elmer's glue + food coloring. Won't fail you. Just add a little bit at a time to elmer's glue until you get the consistency you want. You don't need to know the ratio in advance. You can do this. The first time I made slime with this, I felt so silly for thinking that making slime was complicated in some way.

So my go to recipe during the recent slime craze did NOT involve liquid starch at all. So I wanted to give it another try for the science fair project. I think I decided to give it a fair shot this time around and our slime made with liquid starch came out beautifully! Not to mention it's much simpler than the other popular slime recipe.
The texture and consistency of the slime made with the liquid starch was great! Fun to play with and stayed very stretchy and smooth!
The recipe we used was equal parts school glue and liquid starch. Pour glue into a bowl and add any additives you want (food coloring, glow in the dark powder or paint, iron oxide powder for magnetic slime - the possibilities are endless!). Then add equal part liquid starch and mix them until slime starts to form. Pull the slime out of the bowl and knead it for 5-10 minutes and voila! You've got hours of entertainment for both kids and adults!
