Review

"Ina May Gaskin is an international treasure. Her new guide to breastfeeding is the best thing ever written on the subject. A must-have for all pregnant women interested in the best start for their babies." —Christiane Northrup, M.D., Author of Women' s Bodies, Women's Wisdomand The Wisdom of Menopause

"This book is all we've come to expect of Ina May Gaskin—warm, wise, solidly based in real experiences, and sensitive to the needs and lives of women in all their complexity. It's the only breastfeeding book you'll need."—Barbara Katz Rothman and Wendy Simonds, authors of
Laboring On

"Simply put, midwife Ina May Gaskin is the most important person in maternity care in North America, bar none."—Marsden Wagner, M.D., M.S., former Director of Women' s and Children's Health, World Health Organization

"Breastfeeding is one of life' s greatest joys. And there is no better guide to have at your side than the legendary Ina May!"—Harvey Karp, M.D., author of
The Happiest Baby on the Block and creator of the DVD

"Ina May Gaskin's words of wisdom are a gift to all women.
Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding is the perfect informative companion toSpiritual Midwifery and Ina May's Guide to Childbirth. All of them hold a treasured place in my library and should, no doubt, be part of yours."—Ricki Lake, coauthor of Your Best Birth and cocreator of the documentary The Business of Being Born

"Eons of accumulated feminine wisdom, having been muddled and dispersed by modern medical practice, have become sadly unavailable to today's woman. In this and each of her books, Ms. Gaskin, one of the world's foremost scholars of such wisdom, puts it concisely and lovingly back into our hands. Ina May's Guide to Breastfeeding is the perfect gift for any pregnant woman. It is like having the best childbirth and lactation consultant right there at your bedside. And for non-pregnant women and men alike, may it be viewed as the seminal feminist text that it is, and may the re-empowerment of women with respect to childbirth be seen as central to the work of feminism, and indeed the cause of humanity, in the 21st century." —Ani DiFranco

Let me preface this with: Ina is the leading spokeswoman for unmedicated birth in America, and thus some information in this book will be skewed to promote that. Personally, I think that's a good thing, but some people seem to get their feathers ruffled if they think an author is a tree hugging liberal. If you are open minded enough to get past her passion for natural birth, the information in this book is invaluable in regards to breast feeding.
I honestly did not expect there to be so much information that I am now glad I know contained in this book. I'm pregnant with my first now, so we'll see if it comes in handy! Ina gives great information on what to expect with nursing, problem solving (so you don't go in like I almost did thinking you just pop the kid on your boob and call it a day), and advice for other aspects pre and post birth. She DOES give info on how to successfully breast feed even if you have a medicated birth or a Cesarean. While she's pro-natural, she knows sometimes ish happens. After reading this book, I look back at my sister's birth, how it went wrong, and how her failed attempt at breast feeding might have been resolved. Knowledge is power. If you go into anything-birth, medical, or dental procedure, unprepared and without your own research, you are at the mercy of your doctor's level of caring and involvement.
Another note-while Ina's observations are sometimes backed up with research and references, some are purely observations from her trial and error and experiences as a long time midwife. I find most of these observations to sound logical, but I suggest not getting hung up on her "agenda" and just enjoy the extremely helpful breast feeding information.

Really helped to ease my mind and offer solutions.

Before I had my child I was worried I wasn't able to breastfeed her after seeing so many women struggling to make it happen and so many others bottle feeding from day one. I figured breastfeeding was not as easy as they make it seem on TV and since I was determined to do so, it was worth to prepare myself to the best of my abilities.
After reading this book, (which is not only easy to read but also awakening) I felt so ready to breastfeed, I didn't even read anything else.
From a personal experience I can say that breastfeeding was very hard at the beginning, but without a doubt is the single best thing I could've done for my child. I'm grateful for Ina May's wisdom.

This guide is a great resource on breastfeeding and there are some very humorous stories (and pictures) included. I give it four stars, because my husband and I are still awaiting the arrival of our precious child, and this book, though honest in its approach, can cause some worry about the conditions one may encounter during breastfeeding. If you are expecting and are anywhere close to being a hypochondriac, I would suggest that you wait to read the book until you have started breastfeeding. If you are more level-minded, then you should be able to digest the information without giving yourself an ulcer. Also, Gaskin is clearly a fan of enforcing culture via public policy and this theme is present through the entirety of the book; if you're not an advocate of this type of enforcement, then the book can be a bit off-putting at times. Overall, it's a great resource and I would recommend the book to couples who desire to breastfeed their child/ren.

I am a labor, delivery and postpartum RN and mother of a 10 month old. I loved this book. It was factually accurate and provided information I have not found in other breastfeeding resources. In particular, I appreciated her realistic view of women returning to work and continuing to breastfeed. She had excellent information about the use of a breastpump and what to expect while using one. I also liked her more "moderate" view on breastfeeding unlike the the La Leche League's book. It was nice to hear a more moderate voice in the world of breastfeeding.

This book was also quite educational and discussed some rather fascinating accounts of lactation, such as women who were able to lactate post-menopausal and prior to pregnancy. I found this quite interesting and of value to discuss in a culture that seems to have the belief that lactation is difficult or unimportant.

The only section I was somewhat ambivalent about was her discussion about "nipple phobia." While I do agree that our culture is "phobic" of seeing a woman's nipples, I'm not sure that the label adds value to the destruction of this state in our culture. Other than that, this book was the best breastfeeding resource I have ever read.

This book had a lot of useful information and I felt that it set a good tone. Things come up and happen but this helps to encourage you on your path to breast feeding. This book raised a lot of topics for my husband to research and have more definite opinions about and for that I am sincerely grateful. After having to pump and feed with our first and finding out that the hospital forced formula on more than one occasion during that time, I am more determined than ever to breast feed my next child. This book may not have everything but it sure had a lot and like I said it made me look at other ideas and options for my birth and after firth. Knowledge is definitely power and this book has helped to prepare me for our next baby. I want to leave the hospital with a happy, healthy breastfeeding baby, and I feel this will certainly help!

I purchased this at full price and my analysis is fair and impartial.

Get this book, I'm a new mom who knew next to nothing about breastfeeding. I didn't study much beforehand because the women in my life made it seem so easy, but I had a terrible time at first. Every other page I learned something from Ina May that I was doing wrong. Now my baby and I are pros. Thanks Ina May! (Get her birth book too!)

4.0 out of 5 stars Guida all'allattamento - Ina May

A bit hippyish- but great to get you in the mindset that breastfeeding is the most normal thing even if it’s challenging at the start (especially the women’s stories). Love Ina Mays books.

5.0 out of 5 stars Blown away by her knowledge and so grateful!

A friend had given me another book written by Ina May (Ina May's guide to childbirth) and I was so blown away by this woman's knowledge that I had to buy Ina May's guide to breastfeeding. This woman has obviously a lot of experience working with pregnant and breastfeeding women and understands it better than anyone. Her knowledge on the subject is incredibly valuable for a first time mother like myself and I like that she bases the information in the book on both research and her personal experience. I'm so grateful for everything I've learned from this book! Thank you Ina May!
