It’s always been Mimi Rousseau’s dream to open her own bistro, but it seems beyond her grasp since she’s been chased back home to Nouvelle Vie in Napa Valley by her late husband’s tremendous debt. Until her best friend Jorianne James introduces her to entrepreneur Bryan Baker who invests in promising prospects. Now, working the bistro and inn until she’s able to pay it off and call it her own, Mimi is throwing the inn’s first wedding ever.

The wedding will be the talk of the town, as famous talk show host Angelica Edmonton, daughter of Bryan’s half-brother, Edison, has chosen the inn as her perfect venue. Anxious, Mimi is sure things are going to turn south, especially when Edison gets drunk and rowdy at the out-of-towners’ dinner, but by the evening, things begin to look up again. That is until six AM rolls around, and Bryan is found dead at the bistro with an éclair stuffed in his mouth. And the fingers point at Mimi, whose entire loan is forgiven in Bryan’s will.

Now it’s up to Mimi to clear her name and get to the bottom of things before the killer turns up the heat again in
A Deadly Éclair, the scrumptious series debut by Agatha Award-winning author Daryl Wood Gerber.

"Daryl Wood Gerber cooks up an intriguing tale of bistro business gone terribly wrong. “A delicious and charming new series by Daryl Wood Gerber,
A Deadly Éclair is a sensory trip to the California Coast complete with a whodunit that will keep you turning the pages until the very end. Daryl Wood Gerber has a definitive cozy hit in the new French Bistro series set in the spectacular beauty of the Napa Valley.
Mimi Rousseau’s dream has been to open a French Bistro. She has returned home to Napa Valley and the Nouvelle Vie Inn in Napa Valley.. After she receives help from a investor and entrepreneur Bryan Baker with a agreement to pay him back, she sets up her Bistro and works at the Inn . She decides to cater a high society Napa wedding to establish her business.. At the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding many are drunk and the night is fraught with problems for Mimi. In the morning after her investor is found dead with one of her pastry's stuck in his mouth. As the one who benefits the most from his death, she is immediately considered suspect number one. Now she must clear her name so she can restart her business and not lose everything she has.
This is a wonderful story and the backdrop of the alluring beauty of Napa makes this story stand out . As a Napa family I can attest the author has her descriptive location described absolutely perfect. The sleuth is very well crafted and left this avid mystery fan guessing until the end. I love the smart independent talented protagonist . The supporting characters all add depth to the story and are entertaining. I love this series and look forward to the next in series. All in all this is a wonderful successful debut series !
Thank you with gratitude for the ARC which did not influence my review.

The writing is good, the proofreading excellent, the characters interesting, the setting lovely. The plot is spotty, the red herrings seem to drive the plot. The mirror? Lip reading? All the conflicting debts? The carousel? The ending was odd. Why would the murderer admit guilt in detail in front of 3 people? Was the culprit going to kill all 3? The $300 k crisis just evaporated after being a major problem. And the ending had too many tidy romances and new characters. Enjoyable read but messy.

Great cozy mystery filled with all the things I love...great characters, great storyline, great food, and a dash of romance!

Mimi Rousseau is returning home in hopes of achieving her dream...opening her own little bistro. She isn’t quite sure that is in the cards for her until her best friend finds her an investor, Bryan Baker. She is finally on the right path when Bryan is murdered. All clues point to her. She will have to work hard to clear her name if she wants her freedom and before all her dreams go up in smoke.

The murder mystery itself has a cast of suspects, and the author kept me guessing throughout the entire book. The heroine, Mimi, was a great character. I admired her independence and intelligence. She needed both of those things to get her out of the predicament she was in. I am also looking forward to seeing where her potential romance with Nash will lead her.

This was an enjoyable, witty, cozy mystery. The fabulous scenery of the beautiful Napa Valley was an added bonus. Throw in a great cast of secondary characters and an AMAZING collection of recipes, and you have yourself a wonderful beginning to what promises to be a wonderful series!!!

A Deadly Eclair by Daryl Wood Gerber is a great start to a new mystery series. To be honest, I didn't expect to like it as much as I did because I figured it'd be just like any other cooking/food-related mystery series out there, but I was wrong. I finished the book in one day, it was that good. I really enjoyed the characters, especially the main character, Mimi Rousseau. Mimi is very likeable and I found it easy to root for her throughout the story. All of the supporting characters around Mimi were very likeable as well. It's not often that I find a mystery series where all of the regular characters are likeable. There's usually at least one character who is either annoying or not very nice, but that wasn't the case here. I like Chef C, Stefan, Heather, Raymond, Jo, Tyson, Nash, and even Willow. And even Mimi's mom is great and not overbearing in the least. I will honestly say that I was surprised by the big reveal of the murderer. Like Mimi, I kept getting stumped at the motive for killing Bryan. Once revealed, everything clicked into place and I couldn't believe I hadn't seen it from the beginning. I truly loved the book and I am looking forward to reading the next one in the series.

Note: I voluntarily reviewed a free copy of this book in exchange for my fair and honest review. All opinions are mine and mine alone.

I like Daryl Wood Gerber's mysteries, and I was excited about this new series. Unfortunately, it isn't as good as her others. The setting and food description are spot on, but there are far too many characters and too many red herrings. The plot was okay, but Gerber has written much better ones. When I finished the story, I was glad, but I wasn't anxious for the next one.

I enjoyed this first in a new series. Mimi opens a French Bistro with help of funding from Bryan, he then hosts his niece's wedding there. At the pre dinner things don't seem all that happy among some of the bridal party members. When Bryan is found dead the next morning by the bride to be, everyone is in shock. Mimi starts to search for who could have done this to this kind man, but as she questions people she finds that Bryan wasn't quite loved by everybody. There are plenty of suspects and the mystery is good, it kept me switching suspects. The characters are likable, and the setting sounds beautiful. I will continue on with this series.

This is a kind of cosy book I like very much. There were a bit of everything in it!
Good characters, good descriptions, good food and wine. The mystery was well plotted. I laughed about the fishes because it's true the way they acted. I will read the next one for sure...

3.0 out of 5 stars Do you have a question?
Reviewed in Canada on December 21, 2020
My goodness Mimi must have asked over 200 questions. One hundred while she was talking to herself (incessantly). The other hundred were asked of the people who had come to town for the wedding. She had never met them before and yet they all answered 99.9% of the sometimes quite personal questions asked by this simple Bistro and Inn owner. Everything about this story line was good, it was Mimi who ruined it for me.
