I like to have "tools" that work well and last. I knew I would probably use my iron 2 times a month, so I didn't want to spend a whole lot on it. That being said, I know the wisdom in spending a little more up front for a well-working product that lasts, rather than buying several inferior products. Rowenta seemed like the best brand. My ironing-loving mother-in-law has one of their top-priced products, and couldn't recommend it more highly. I wasn't interested in spending the money to buy one just like hers, soI looked at some of their middle-of-the-road ones. However, it seems like the middle-priced ones weren't proportionately better than this one, and Rowenta was either a go high-priced or go low-priced brand. After going to a brick-and-mortar and holding a few different brands/styles, I decided I really liked this one, and Amazon's price was the best.
I have used this iron about 5 times now, and I really enjoy it. I find myself ironing more than I thought I would because I find it relaxing, and this little iron does a great job.
Pros:
It is on the lighter side, but still heavy.
The fine pointed tip with all the steam holes is great.
It is really well balanced.
I don't have any troubles holding or controlling it with my small hands.
Heats up and cools down quickly.
The temp settings seem accurate (a definite cool-warm-hot range)
The steaming is impressive (and also very adjustable).
The mist function is nice (I had to encourage it to work, though. For my first 4 uses, I would press the button and nothing would happen. This last time, I pumped it several times, putting my finger over the hole to create suction, and now it works just fine.)
The pivoting cord is helpful and a good length.
Cons:
The water reservoir seems a little small. I have to refill it if I am ironing more than just a few shirt collars and napkins. This might be setting-based, though.
The water reservoir is awkward to fill. I use a measuring cup, and that helps, but it is awkward. (It is easy to empty, though, for storage.)
It is made in China rather than Germany like their other products. However, it seems very well made! I would have paid a little more, though, for it to have been made with their other irons in Germany.
I'm very happy with this iron, and will recommend it to others! If I remember, I will update this review next year to see if my opinion of it at all changes.
The precision tip lets me get into hard to reach areas and get wrinkles I would've previously had to live with. The iron pours out steam at it's highest setting or is dry as a bone when off, so very good steam control that meets your requirements. The spray nozzle is very good, which I admittedly never thought I'd care about. And the steam shot is very, very potent.
It's taking me 1/3 to 1/2 the time I used to take getting through my weekly ironing. And the results are better. I used to have tough wrinkles slowly return as my shirts cooled with my old iron, but that no longer happens.
I was torn between going all out and getting a top-of-the-line Rowena, but this iron has been a fantastic purchase. Maybe when/if this thing bites the dust, I'll consider upgrading, but I'm very happy for the time being.
I will say that I did notice a burning smell when I first used the iron, almost as if plastic was melting. I no longer can detect that smell, so I'm chalking it up to breaking in the iron.
Highly recommend.
Both of these irons had basic good reviews and are priced similarly. I was somewhat concerned with the mention of 'sputtering' in some reviews, however I knew the Rowenta name and reputation and decided to go with this one. After using this for about a year I feel confident of giving an honest review.
The iron is comfortable, light-weight and over-all works fairly well. I did have some sputtering issues, but have learned how to control that by
sure the settings are adjusted compatibly - if they off slightly off - one too high - one too low - the iron will sputter. The spray is OK - not as even and fine as I would prefer, so I usually just use a separate spray bottle. The steam works well, but for more wrinkled cottons, you will need more dampness. All in all a good iron, hopefully it lasts as many years as the Black and Decker I had (about 8). Not thrilled that Rowenta is now made in China - hard to find something like this that isn't, but I am trying to be more conscience of this.
Update: now that I've had this for a couple of years and very satisfied with it.
I iron everyday for work, and also sew quite a bit as a hobby.
