1 / PrepThe better the wood prep, the better the final result. Minwax Preparation products are the first step to ensure your wood surfaces show their most beautiful colors and smoothest finishes. Start with Minwax Pre-Stain to prevent streaks and blotches by penetrating the wood to promote uniform acceptance of oil-based stains and helps control the effects of grain raise. |
2 / StainApply Minwax Wood Finish stain to bare wood surfaces following label directions. Surface must be dry and free of wax, grease, polish, any foreign matter or old finishes in poor condition. Sand to a smooth, uniform surface and remove dust. Use a clean cloth, wood stain brush or foam applicator and apply in the direction of the grain. Wait 5-15 minutes and wipe away in the direction of the grain. Let dry completely. |
3 / ProtectStir well before and regularly during use. Do not shake. Apply a thin coat of Minwax Polyurethane Protective Finish. Apply in one direction with the grain. Do not over-brush. Let dry at least 2 hours then sand with very fine sandpaper (220 grit) to ensure an even finish and proper adhesion of additional coats. Remove all dust. |

In pics one & two you can see what normal use & mere drops of water can do to the finish of "faux wood" which is what the cabinets turned out to be. So, I looked for something water-resistant & settled on a tree branches pattern of removable vinyl paper for the door panels themselves & this Minwax Red Mahogany Stain Marker to touch up the rest because that's what maintenance here uses when they ready an apartment for a new tenant.
NOTE: GRADUALLY apply the stain & wipe it off until you achieve the depth of color needed to match the rest of the wood. Neglecting this part of the process will leave you with wood that's much too dark aka worse than what you're trying to cover. A little patience will leave you with wood that's a pleasure to live with instead of an eyesore.
