5 Stars
The installation was easy and flawless
The installation was easy and flawless! The CrystalDiskMark test results and app performance....priceless (see pictures below)!!This is a real worth while upgrade!Caveats:------------ -- Made No Changes to DELL BIOS settings! -- Ran CrystalDriveMark benchmarks on full up system (116 background processes and 83GB of drive C: populated with OS and Apps) but with anti-virus and firewall switched: OFF -- Installed Samsung Magician 4.9.5 (it uses 10% unallocated space). The jury is out on this since Rapid disk is not supported for this device.-- Drive C: is UEFI by Acronis partition restore noted below.Instructions and/or recommendations:--------------------------------------------------- 1. Run CrystalDriveMark (free download: [...]) and benchmark the existing drive C:. save the results!! 2. Download the Samsung NVMe Driver first from Samsung site: [...] 3. Make an image backup of current Boot drive (in my case the LITEON M.2 OEM SSD). I used Acronis TI 2016 (all partitions), 4. Shutdown system, unplug and open case (one screw), if you have a non-Boot HDD plugged into SATA-0, move it to another free SATA port (this is just insurance), 5. Assemble NVRe SSD onto the Lycom PCIe 3.0 adapter. Secure with included screw (it fits just fine), 6. Install the PCIe Storage assembly into one of the free PCIe 3.0x4 slot (I used the unused 16-bit slot but you can use the free short slot too), 7. Plug in system and power-up, 8. Press F2 to get into DELL BIOS setup. check the MOBOard slots and make sure Mass Storage device is populating a slot (should be OK) 9. Restart the system. You should get a system notice to GPT initialize the new NVRe SSD, initialize it.10. Now is a good time to install the Samsung 950 Pro NVRe driver you downloaded previously,11.Check Disks in the device manager. You should see the new Samsung NVRe device and it should be working,12. I created the needed partitions on the Samsung NVRe SSD using "Minitool Partition Wizard FREE", they are as follows: Partition #1: FAT32, Size 500MB, No Label (this is the EFI system partition) Partition# 2: NTFS, Size 462GB, Label "OS" Partition# 3: NTFS, Size 450MB, Label "WINRETOOLS" partition# 4: NTFS, Size 12.7GB, Label "Image" !!!! DON'T USE DRIVE LETTERS !!!! Select none for new partition drive letters13. From within Windows 10 (pro), startup Acronis TI 2016 and perform a full restore from OEM LITEON SSD to Samsung 950 Pro NVRe. I did this from OEM SSD because it had the new Samsung NVRe driver installed after Image backup was performed.14. When restore is completed, shut down system, unplug system power, ground yourself, open case (if not opened), remove Nvidia Card and power connector,15: Remove the OEM LITEON SSD by removing m.2 small screw to MOBOard, THIS IS IMPORTANT TO PREVENT BOOT FROM OEM SSD!16. Reinstall Nvidia card and power connector and bracket,17. Plug system power back in and power up. The 1st boot will take a little while,18. If all goes well...you'll be at the Windows 10 logon prompt.19. Re-install the case cover.Attached images:--My system overview (using speccy)--Before CrystalDiskMark benchmark result--After CrystalDiskInfo result--After CrystalDiskMark Result

5.0 out of 5 stars 2,600 MB/s Read, 1500 MB/s Write (Read here to ge more speed)
Reviewed in the United States on November 4, 2015
I have to hand it to Samsung - this thing is smoking fast (compared to a single SSD), it was simple to configure, and for this class of NVMe drive it's about the most GBs/$. It does feel good to put money into something that is so far advanced compared to the previous SSD technology.

I've been waiting for delivery of this item for two weeks to complete my new SkyLake build. The i7-6700k is so fast I really needed something more than the (2) Samsung 830 SSD Raid0 configuration I had left over from my old rig. Based on the synthetic and real benchmarks I have run, the 950 Pro is 2.5x faster read and almost 5x faster write speed compared to my old Raid0 SSD setup.

For my new build I went with Windows 10 (which btw looks like total crap compared to Windows 7 Aero Glass). I originally experimented using NVLite to update a Windows 7 SP1 ISO with NVMe drivers, but in the end I decided to go with Win 10, because it has NVMe support built-in and to avoid potential UEFI problems and Secure Boot limitations. Incidentally, I found a great utility called “DoNotSpy10” that eliminates all the new Microsoft spyware, including the key-logger, that’s built into Windows 10. Otherwise, I’m running on a new Asus Deluxe motherboard with the Intel Z170 chipset. The 950 Pro configured in the BIOS as SATA Express (not M.2) with the CSM set to UEFI only for boot device. According to the benchmarks I’m getting, the NVMe is utilizing the proper 4 PCIe lanes.

The new Skylake build (using the 950 Pro 512GB and 32 GBs of Corsair 3200 MHz DDR4) is pretty fast, but not as fast as I expected compared to the 8 year old Q6600 system it replaced. According to Mores Law Skylake should be 2^4x = 16x faster. But as far as I can tell it’s only about 4x faster. Not all that impressive considering eight years of development.

The 950 Pro is tiny - slightly larger than a stick of gum, with memory chips populated on one side only. It gets pretty hot when running CrystalDiskMark (about 150-deg F maybe), but with no thermal throttling that I've seen so far.

Before I ordered the 950 Pro I experimented with the PCIe version of the Intel 750 400GB NVMe, which I later returned (for some reason it interfered with my NVIDIA card). Before the 950 Pro came out, the Intel 750 was the fastest thing out there. But significantly, the 950 Pro, with its 32-layer 3D V-NAND technology, has about a 50% faster continuous write speed than the Intel. I think I'm much happier with the 950 Pro - it's cheaper, faster, smaller, cooler and 'cooler'!

Update: Samsung’s website says they, “…will be producing a proprietary driver for improved performance”, compared to the native Windows driver. So it’s possible we’ll see a little more speed out of this already very fast SSD.
