The Ringmaster's Wife Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 1,269 ratings

An ounce of courage. A split-second leap of faith. Together, they propel two young women to chase a new life—one that’s reimagined from what they might have become.

In turn-of-the-century America, a young girl dreams of a world that stretches beyond the confines of a quiet life on the family farm. With little more than her wit and a cigar box of treasures to call her own, Mable steps away from all she knows, seeking the limitless marvels of the Chicago World’s Fair. There, a chance encounter triggers her destiny—a life with a famed showman by the name of John Ringling.

A quarter of a century later, Lady Rosamund Easling of Yorkshire, England, boards a ship to America as a last adventure before her life is planned out for her. There, the twenties are roaring, and the rich and famous gather at opulent, Gatsby-esque parties in the grandest ballrooms the country has to offer. The Jazz Age has arrived, and with it, the golden era of the American circus, whose queen is none other than the enigmatic Mable Ringling.

When Rosamund’s path crosses with Mable’s and the Ringlings’ glittering world, she makes the life-altering decision to leave behind a comfortable future of estates and propriety, instead choosing the nomadic life of a trick rider in the Ringling Brothers’ circus.

A novel that is at once captivating, deeply poignant, and swirling with exquisite historical details of a bygone world, The Ringmaster’s Wife will escort readers into the center ring, with its bright lights, exotic animals, and a dazzling performance that can only be described as the greatest show on earth!

Delightful and full of nostalgia
The Ringmaster's Wife is a stand alone novel written by Kristy Cambron and it gives a fictional look into the life of John and Mable Ringling. The circus has always fascinated me. I have certain misgivings about the way circus animals have been treated but I'm not talking about that. What fascinated me was that large groups of people and families traveled, lived and worked together—performing.I mean, the whole logistics of making this large traveling circus work has always been interesting to me. I often wondered how they lived and how they made it all work and this book touches on those topics a lot. I feel like I took a step back in time and got to experience what life would have been like as a circus performer.I love the attention to detail and how much work this author puts into researching the historical facts surrounding her characters. I honestly never knew much about the Ringlings but after reading this book, I spent an evening reading everything I could find on the internet. You can also find a tour of John and Mable Ringling's home, the Cà d'Zan on the author's Youtube channel. This book basically has two stories intricately woven into one beautiful tale. First, you have the story of Rosamund and Colin and then you have flashbacks of the fictionalized account of how John and Mable may have met and fell in love. Little is known about how John Ringling met Mable so I loved that the author was able to take a little creative license and was able to bring two beautiful romantic stories within one book.I received this book for free from Litfuse Publicity Group in exchange for an honest review. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.

Two parallel stories, a generation apart, twist and turn around one another. Two love stories, both pure, poignant, and compelling, come together in the end in a beautiful portrayal of the human spirit. If you enjoy a character-based novel with twists in the plot you do not see coming, then this story may be for you! The story excludes the seedier sides of the circus. There is danger but no hooch tents, and the animals are well cared for. This is not a high-action page turner, but the story picks up steam as it goes along. Warning: have lots of time to finish the story, and keep your tissues handy. I stayed up to 4 AM finishing this book, and I cried rivers at the end!

A note for those who read the faith-based historical romance genre (as this book is classified): be forewarned this is not a faith-based book. I do not say this as criticism but as fact. God is only mentioned in one paragraph near the end. However, this is a highly spiritual book. The author does not tell; she shows. I believe you will have no regrets after reading this beautiful novel.

This novel is an interesting combination of the real life of the Ringlings and the fictional life of characters developed in this work.
The novel has all the elements of a good story... Romance, intrigue, family issues and characters that are good, bad and ugly. The main character, Rose, leaves her aristocratic life in Britain to join the circus as a bare back rider. This dream is not all smooth sailing as she meets the obstacles in training and travel as well as the jealousy of fellow performers. It is the love of a special friend as well as that at Mabel Ringling that helps her overcome the obstacles but only to be confronted with one she least expects.
My one problem is the flipping back and forth between characters and time. It was particularly confusing at the beginning but I got used to it after awhile. It seems this style is in vogue today... authors seem to think a linear timeline is somehow passé.

Kristy Cambron has done it again. She has managed to take me to a different place in a different time and I have enjoyed every minute of it! The Ringmaster’s Wife follow’s Lady Rosamund Easling from her proper English estate home to America and the wild, unpredictable world of the Ringling Brother’s Circus.
Rosamund loved Ingenue. Her horse was her only connection she had left to her beloved brother, but when her father sells Ingenue without her knowledge and insists that she marry Lord Brentwood, Rosamund knows the time for change has come. That change takes her where she never dreamed of going, to the circus. Rosamund meets many characters at the circus. Perhaps most notable after the handsome circus manager, Colin, is the circus owner’s wife, Mabel Ringling. Mabel’s story is not so different from Rosamund’s. Cambron weaves the two stories together in a marvelous read, The Ringmaster’s Wife.
Kristy Cambron has the ability to combine fiction with actual history and create beautiful, tantalizing, tremendous stories as exciting and delightful as a trip to the circus. Cambron’s previous novels are great reads, but so far The Ringmaster’s Wife is my favorite of Cambron’s novels and one of my all-time favorites overall.
I received a copy of The Ringmaster’s Wife in exchange for an honest review; however, I had already purchased a copy of my own.

I had a lot of problems with this book. First is the constant back and forth between the plots with Mable and Rosamund. The shifting timeframe was really hard to keep track of because Mable is in both timeframes, and I would sometimes forget to look at the date at the beginning of the chapter. Secondly, the title is very misleading. Neither Mable nor Rosamund (the two main characters) are the Ringmaster's wife; in fact, there is no ringmaster character in the entire book! I feel this title was picked because it is a common formula: The Time Traveler's Wife, the Astronaut's Wife, etc. It sounds good, but it really has nothing to do with this book, and neither does the cover art. Rosamund was a bareback horse rider! Third, the character of Rosamund was very bland. She is portrayed as being very brave to leave her privileged life to join the circus, but her personality is so soft spoken and weak it's really disappointing that she lets others walk all over her. Maybe I've watched a little too much Downton Abbey, but I expect an Earl's daughter to have a little more gumption! Fourth, the plot is very slow moving, probably due to the shifting perspectives. It felt like nothing really happens until the very end, and by that time I was losing interest. There is a plot twist at the end that was unexpected and disappointing, and I really hate prologues that give away plot points before the book even starts, so I basically hated the beginning and the end. This novel would have been better served if it had just focused on Mabel and John Ringling instead of the fictional characters of Rosamund and Colin. I have read several circus themed novels, but this one didn't do it for me. Compared to Water for Elephants and The Night Circus, this one is a snooze. I don't think I would read anything else by this author after this.

I have such mixed feelings with this book that I struggled to decide between three or four stars. I decided to go with 3 as even though I liked the story I probably wouldn't read it again which means it doesn't fit as a 4 for me. What I really enjoyed about the book was: the telling of two stories and the eventual weaving of these stories together, the descriptions of the circus were wonderful and really helped me picture it. The interactions between the two couples with each other was heart-warming. I really like Colin and Rose. My favourite part was when Colin played the violin for her. The scenes between horse and rider were also enjoyable. Parts that frustrated me were: the jumping in time within each story line. Yes each chapter would state what year it was and where the circus was, but it took a little while into each chapter to figure out what time of year it was. There were parts that felt disjointed and didn't really seem to fit with the story. But my main frustration was the prologue, rather than really being a prequel to the story it was part of the story that I feel should have been inserted as part of chapter 35. It was confusing at the beginning and by the time I got to page 330 it wasn't fresh in my mind and as such this chapter was confusing, and then the story continued on. Once I finished the story I went back and re-read the prologue and it understood what was going on much more the second time reading it. Overall, I did enjoy the time spent with these characters in this time period.
