Brilliant Stereo Recording. Now in your pocket.

Combining powerful recording capability with elegance and simplicity, the H1 Handy Recorder is Zoom's smallest, most affordable recorder ever. The H1 Handy Recorder features Zoom's renowned recording technology and studio-quality microphones in their easiest, most portable device ever.

Now Zoom recording technology is available to everyone. And with an infinite variety of applications, you'll want to take your H1 everywhere. From musical performances, songwriting sessions and rehearsals to seminars, conferences, journalism or capturing audio for video, the H1 gives you clean, clear stereo sound effortlessly.
Zoom H1 Portable Digital Recorder Features:
  • Stereo X/Y mic configuration captures perfect stereo images
  • Same frequency and SPL handling as popular Zoom H2
  • Records Broadcast WAV (BWF) at 96kHz/48kHz/44.1kHz at 16-bit or 24-bit
  • Records MP3 from 48 to 320kbps for maximum recording time
  • Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port
  • Built-in reference speaker
  • Includes 2GB microSD memory card and 1 AA battery
  • One AA size battery allows 10 hours operation
  • Accommodates up to 32GB microSDHC memory cards
  • Track marker function
  • Low cut filter
  • Built-in mounting joint for tripod mount
  • 1/8 inch external mic input
  • Stereo 1/8 inch line output
  • Auto record level
H1 Features at a glance:
The H1 Handy Recorder puts all its functions at your fingertips. No menus! Its backlit display features recording levels, file format, time elapsed, remaining battery life and recording time.
Its intuitive transport puts all the controls on the side with no menus on the screen. A large record button gives you complete control. Playback and pause, marker, forward and rewind buttons are all accessible by your thumb. Volume for playback and monitoring can be adjusted using your index finger.

On the back, you'll find a single AA battery compartment, a tripod mount, low cut filter, auto level setting and recording format selectable switches. There's also convenient mount for a strap or lanyard clip.
All the transport controls are on right side of the H1 and you can adjust recording levels on the fly. A 1/8 inch stereo line input is located on this side and its USB port is also accessible here as is its power on and hold switch.

On the left side, you can replace your microSD card by folding down the rubberized door. There's also a 1/8 inch stereo line/headphone output with adjustable volume control for monitoring playback. The built-in reference speaker is on the bottom of the unit.

What sets Zoom apart?
Like all Zoom recorders, the H1's onboard microphones are configured in an X/Y pattern, for stunning stereo imaging. Because both mics are arranged on the same axis, they are equidistant from the sound source for perfect localization and no phase shifting. The result is great stereo recordings with natural depth and accurate imaging.

Under your thumb…
With its newly designed user interface, the H1 is also our easiest recorder to use. All its functions are at your fingertips, such as track marker, auto record, low cut filter, level and volume controls with on-board buttons…No menus required!

Intuitive controls make it easy to capture the audio you need with ease. But it still provides the versatility you've come to expect from Zoom. So you get total recording format flexibility from 16-bit/44.1 kHz to 24-bit/96 kHz WAV, or MP3 from 48 kbps to 320 kbps and enough tools onboard to make impeccable recordings.

Secure your digital memories.
The H1 records on microSD cards and comes with a 2GB card. Using a 32 GB microSD card allows over 50 hours of recording time at 16-bit/44.1 kHz. MicroSD cards were specifically designed for the ever-evolving mobile technology market. Approximately the size of a fingernail, the microSD card is a significant advance in technology and its size and capacity are a major reason why the H1 is able to deliver so much recording technology in such a small package.

Share the love.
With its Hi-Speed USB 2.0 port, the H1 allows for fast transfer of your audio files to your computer. Listen, edit and share with your fans on your Mac or PC. It also includes a reference speaker to ensure your recordings are being captured as you desire.

Musicians - Shorten the Learning Curve
With stereo recording so precise and so easy, musicians will love the H1. An indispensible part of any serious musician's arsenal, the H1 makes recording rehearsals and practice sessions easier than ever. And the best part is, because your performance is captured with crystal clear audio, you can really critique your own playing, and get better.

Songwriters - More Hit Wonders
Isn't it time you heard your masterpieces in beautiful stereo that rivals a professional recording studio? Zoom knows you're the creative type, not an engineer. That's why Zoom made the H1 so easy to setup and navigate. So you can keep the inspiration going. Your most creative ideas can now be recorded and shared with your co-writers anywhere and at anytime the music hits you. Just be sure you have your H1 on at all times!

Bands - On the Road, On the Run.
There are so many applications for your band and the H1. Start with learning new songs. If you're the guy who teaches the songs, record each part on an H1 and email it to the members of your band. If you're the one who books the band, you band needs to get heard. And everyone in the group needs to hear their performance to get better. The H1 makes capturing your performance easy, even when you're cranking out high SPLs.

Video and Film Professionals - Indie Shoots That Don't Sound Indie.
With DSLR cameras that shoot incredible HD video, the need for a better audio solution has emerged. The H1 will easily shoe mount on top of a video or DSLR camera. And because it has a standard 1/4-20 mount on the bottom, you can place the H1 anywhere on your rig. Use the stereo output jack to connect directly to the audio input on your camera, or bring the audio into your editing suite using the USB connection. The H1 is the perfect entry point for those getting started with dual source shooting.

Journalism - Scoop Central…
These days, a journalist needs the ablility to capture broadcast ready interviews whenever or wherever they occur. Imagine being able to spontaneously capture the kind of audio your producer needs and send it remotely via email. That's what the H1 provides. It's literally a recording studio in your pocket! And the files are Broadcast Wave Format (BWF) so your producer has time and date stamping as well as any markers you set for total editing ease.

Business - Content Management
Whether it's a sales meeting, training conference or a seminar, the ability to capture and distribute the content is a big part of the ROI when you do events. Use the H1 to record your content for your company website or distribute it by email to your peers. Edit and turn it into a podcast. The possibilities are endless. Whatever the use, the H1 is perfect for legal, business and medical field use.

Accessorize the size…
Everything you need to get started recording is included. Your H1 comes with an AA battery for 10 hours of operation and a 2 GB microSD card.

In addition, an H1 accessory package (APH-1) is also available with an array of accessories that make your recordings even more pristine and easier to capture. The accessory kit includes a windscreen, AC adapter (USB type), USB cable, adjustable tripod stand, padded-shell case and a mic clip adapter.

4 Stars
Feels cheap, but excellent features and fantastic sound quality in a portable solution.
Product arrives and I open the box. The recording unit, microSD card with SD adapter, and one battery are included inside. No product manual :( but there was two papers that had a download access code to get their free audio software online. I pick up the recorder and am a bit surprised by the feel of it, as it's very lightweight and the plastic that it's made of feels cheap. This will end up being my least-favorite part about the Zoom H1 - the cheap casing and buttons. The MicroSD cover that covers the SD card is also cheap and kind of annoying to try to loosen to insert a microSD card. I'm not sure what they were thinking when they designed the cover, but I can overlook it since I rarely change out the microSD card anyway. I discovered the H1 isn't praised for its outer looks, features, and buttons, but for the quality of the recording, which is really what matters for the price you're paying.Once I inserted the battery the screen lit up and recording time, quality, and audio levels meter display on the screen. The audio level meter bar is constantly fluctuating, so it appears to be metering the levels very actively. I plugged my headphones into the "line out" and was blown away by the quality. The cheap feel of the Zoom H1's plastic does not at all match the quality of the sound coming through, which is superb!Next I adjusted the levels. There are manual adjustments for input level on the side. These buttons feel cheap and don't always respond when pushing them, but they do work nonetheless. The sound meter bar reflected accurately the input levels I was changing, and I could hear the increase of the sounds around me through my headphones. Next I tried the "auto level," which is part of 3 quick switches on the back of the recorder. Auto level tries to adjust the input levels according to how much sound it's picking up. It's a great concept, and it does change the input when it hears the sounds around it getting louder or quieter, but I really don't think I'm going to be using it. Unfortunately it fluctuates in a very noticeable way, and I think listeners would be very aware of it. Much more practical for me to set the input levels manually on-site while monitoring it through the headphones. The other adjustments work well. There is a lo-cut quick-switch on the back that cuts out excess background noise well. I usually leave it on unless I specifically want to capture the sounds in the background. The REC format quick-switch allows you to choose mp3 or wav format but just flipping it over to your choice. Again, a fantastic way to quickly save some memory or increase your quality if you're out in the field. The playback feature is nice, but takes a bit of getting used to navigating and deleting the files. A product manual wasn't included in the box, which would have been nice to explain how to use the playback features. But that's not too much sweat as I'll just find the manual online.Recording is very simple. Press the big red button in the middle. Press it again to stop. The record button also takes you out of the playback menu to get back to record/monitor mode. Now the top looks funky with the arrangement of the left/right channel microphones. I quickly found out that the best angle to record from was directly at the end of it. If you record at the side it will pick up one channel louder than the other, or won't pick it up very clearly. It will still pick up audio from all around the room, but if you point the end of the H1 you'll notice it zeroes in on the sound of that object. So when you're recording people, be sure to point the end of the recorder directly at them.INPUTS / OUTPUTSThere is one line out jack, and one line in jack. The line in would work great for using a lapel mic and other reviewers have shown great results using the H1 this way. You can get a quality Sony lapel for around $35 that works great, and would allow for more mobility while recording. The line out is great for monitoring through heaphones. I was able to walk around with my noise-cancelling headphones and didn't miss any sounds around me. I could immediately tell if I needed to adjust the levels or if the sound was picking up by using headphones. What a great way to know how your recording is sounding at the moment instead of finding out later that you didn't adjust it right. The line out would also work great for plugging into other equipment. I'll most likely use it for my computer and to directly plug into a DSLR camera. It would make a great "Interviewing" mic by plugging it into the DSLR camera and holding the H1 up to the person being interviewed, or you can use the tripod mount to connect a hot shoe mount (not included) and mount it on top of the dslr camera as the main mic, or to pick up a second independent channel of audio. If you don't use headphones, there is always the tiny speaker at the bottom end that will play back your audio for you. So you can easily listen to your recordings anywhere.Other ports include the USB port. The Zoom H1 didn't come with a USB cable, and it's not the standard cell phone type. Fortunately it uses the same USB port as my dslr camera, so I can just use that.FINAL THOUGHTSI'm very happy with the Zoom H1, especially the sound quality compared to the cost. Unfortunately it's apparent where the cost savings was made, which is in the low quality of the plastic casing and plastic buttons. The features are great though, and quick and easy to use on location. However, unless you're actually a professional this recorder can make you feel like one with the results. I'm all about the results, which is why I'm rating it highly and recommending it to at-home podcasters, video producers, musicians, etc. It really does pick up all the sound you need it to at high quality in a portable solution.

This is the audio solution I'd been searching for for my YouTube videos. It's really an all-in-one device - a pocket or belt clip-sized recorder (for a separate wired lapel mic), a standalone microphone and a USB desktop microphone. I'd tried a couple of wireless mic systems to allow me to move around in my videos without being tethered to the camera, but I just wasn't happy with the sound quality from any of them in the consumer price range. The Zoom H1, though, sounds great and achieves the same purpose while also filling those aforementioned extra roles that I never really expected it to.

The included microphones (it has two for stereo) sound great - very high fidelity with low noise. Noise has been one problem I've had with every other microphone system I've tried, wired or wireless - either there's a lot of noise and/or hiss, or the sound is muffled on the high end as that's how the inherent noise is being controlled. But that's not true of the H1. If anything, despite the relative lack of noise it's a little too bright, but I'm pretty confident that a basic windscreen could tame that.

Workflow using a separate off-camera audio recorder is a little different than recording through the camera, but with Davinci Resolve (even the free version) it's a snap to sync it up, so don't worry about it if that's what's holding you back. There's basically one extra step, which is to import the audio files in addition to the video files, but you can tell Resolve to just sync everything up by waveform (assuming you also recorded audio on camera) and it'll compare the files and automatically link and sync your audio files to their video files. I assume other apps have similar functions, although with some you may need to do it manually, which would make a slate helpful.

With this recorder, while shooting myself I will typically have the H1 on my belt with a Sony ECMCS3 lapel mic connected and attached to my shirt. This allows me to move anywhere while filming (my camera also allows smartphone control), and I just need to remember to press record on both devices - honestly, this has been easy to get used to doing. The H1's record button is so big that you can just press it by feel, without looking at the recorder, which is, well, handy.

If there's any minor criticism I might have, it's overall build quality, construction and design other than the big record button. The unit is plastic, and it's that nasty slippery smooth plastic that forever feels yucky and sweaty after the first few days of use without constant cleaning. Also, the buttons other than the record button are tiny and recessed, all the better so you don't accidentally press them, but initial setup can be a bit of a challenge as a result, as is changing settings whenever you need to.

I've also noticed that there seems to be slightly more noise when I switch to 24k sample rates rather than 16k. For me, I don't need 24k since I'm just recording my speaking voice, but for someone recording music, it might be a concern. It's still a very tiny amount of noise, but I tested in silence and I could hear it through headphones with the volume turned up a fair amount. It was true with either the built-in mic or external mic activated, so I'm pretty sure it is the recorder. For what it's worth, I had auto level control turned off, and had the record level at around 75.

Still, at around $100 (or much less for the white one as I write this), I consider this recorder a bargain. I'm recording literally all of my audio with it at this point, and it sounds great for both "live" stuff and in-studio voice-overs.

I do recommend a few accessories to make this recorder truly useful and versatile. The first is a belt clip. Second is a desktop tripod. Third is an external lapel mic. And fourth is probably a windscreen to tame the high end (though I don't have one that fits yet myself). With a windscreen you don't really need a pop filter either, though I'm using one now myself. It's also handy to have a mini-USB cable to use the recorder as a USB mic, but you probably already have like 15 of those. With those things, you can do anything with this recorder, and you're going to get great, near-pro quality sound for not much money.

I work as a free lance journalist and needed an upgrade from my phone for interviews as we do straight audio reviews at my main outlet. Let me tell you, this thing was like a massive upgrade for a small price and size!

The audio quality hear is so crisp for its small package that I'm amazed I didn't upgrade sooner. Its not going to be as good as a high end cardioid mic, but for on the go and fitting easily in a pocket or a bag and operating by itself, its stellar. We've used this for interviews, review, even audio to go along with video when we didn't have more professional setups for it. This works great (with a little time spent syncing for video) and is small enough to even keep out of sight in the videos. I even got a foam windscreen to cover the microphones so it looks even better on screen and blocks more unwanted noise.

While the battery life is great, the UI isn't the absolute best. Its not attrocious or anything, but it takes some time to learn it, and even still I barely toy with it anymore. Its best to use it as a set it and forget it setup and just run with it. Do all the data management and all that on a computer. Which you can do by a USB connection with a common cable or by pulling the micro-SD card and putting that in your computer. Its more functional and easy to manage that way. In a pinch you can listen to your audio playback over the built in speaker, or using headphones. What I also like is you can listen live to the recording with headphones, so if you have a dedicated audio person while another interviews, they can manage the quality. Its a real boon.

Quite honestly, there are higher quality devices for audio out there, Zoom makes many of them too, but for someone who wants or needs the tools themselves on a budget this is perfect. If you slightly above entry level, and good if you might have someone else occasionally bringing big guns if they want it, but still wanting to get some professional product on your own to turn in. And its small enough that I generally bring it with me even if I'm not going anywhere I expect to need to record anything because it can't hurt.

5.0 out of 5 stars Noise level isn't best, otherwise an excellent product for the price

Purchased a month ago. Good for demo-recordings, but not for pro-quality. I mean microphones are perfect to my ear but the signal-to-noise ratio isn't perfect, add a bit of compression to the signal and you'll hear it. But if a recording needs no compression this recorder will do a great job.
Interface is very convenient, what I liked:
- red LED blinks when there's clipping + there's a sound level on LCD, easy to control levels
- overdubbing feature (overlay as much tracks as you wish and later extract them using audacity & inversion - multi-track recorder in your pocket!)
- optionally works as a computer audio interface with microphone or line-in, no drivers needed
- really low power consumption
Wind-filter is a must. You'll also need a microUSB cable and 32GB microSD card for it. Still good value for money.
