TP-LINK TD-W8960n Wireless N ADSL2+ Modem Router, A Review

Introduction

In last week's column I talked about the issues I've had with the True supplied Billion Sky Modem and the Humack modems they carried previously.

Basically, despite many visits by True technicians, I could never get these two to work without dropping every few hours, often needing to be power-cycled to reset, and how after as little as a month old they'd progressively get worse. I have a box of over 10 of these, all in various stages of remaining function. The point with this was, even a brand new Billion Sky from the box resulted in the more than occasional drop and often needed to be power-cycled.

Finally I went to Pantip Plaza and asked for the best modem they carried. The True technicians had already told me the Dlink was the one to get, and the shops at Pantip confirmed this. At first I was excited with the Dlink DSL-2542b. More speed, no drops, and a reasonable price of baht 1800. Even though it took two True technicians two days to get it to work in a bridged mode with my Linksys WRT-350n Wireless N router, I was still happy because it was the first modem that worked without dropping. Then after less than 24 hours it dropped and required power cycling. It seems that every 24 hours, give or take, the Dlink would drop until it was power cycled.

A reader wrote in explaining that when running torrents the modem required an unusual number of connections and they probably weren't clearing from the buffer without a power-cycle reset. This makes sense, though I had no way to verify. Thank you!

I'd already ordered another unit, just in case, and it was on its way from the US. In the few short weeks it took for the new unit to arrive, the Dlink DSL-2542b's performance degraded noticeably. Speed decreased, power-cycle resets were required every 4-5 hours vs every 24 hours, and it started dropping like the Billion Sky from True. I exchanged it at the Dlink service center for a new one, and in less than 7-8 days of use it was acting the same.

And then the new unit arrived.

TP-Link TD-W8960n Wireless ADSL2+ Modem Router

TP-Link is a little known Chinese company in Shenzhen China. As most of the big name routers, including the Dlink and Billion Sky are manufactured in China, the TP-Links origin didn't bother me at all.

Unpacking the TD-W8960n I noticed it had very clean lines, was small and light, and included the power supply, two antennas, two RJ11 phone cables, one RJ45 connection cable, and a single ADSL splitter/filter in the event you use a phone on the same line.

The TD-W8960n is a single band (2.4ghz) wireless N/B/G wireless router with four physical Ethernet RJ45 ports, a standard phone line connection, and is rated to handle up to 24mbps download and 3.5mbps upload. As my connection is only 16mbps download and 1mbps upload this worked out fine.

It includes built in VPN tunnel capability, QoS protocols directly supporting most popular applications, a 300mbps Wireless N transmission rate, and just about any security protocol you can imagine. I won't go into all of the features, but except for the 802.11a band (5ghz) I can't think of anything it doesn't have. I've had the 802.11a band on my wireless routers for the last 6-7 years and they never get used so no big loss there.

The more I read over the specifications the more impressed I became. This unit doesn't lack for anything!

The front panel LED's are standard, power, internet, ADSL connection, QoS enabled, and 4 WLAN Ethernet port activity/connection LED's.

Installation

The first thing I noticed when I carried this small device (8x5x1 inches) to my office where my networking equipment is located, is that it would replace an equally large Dlink modem/router AND a much larger Linksys WRT-350n wireless N router. The extra space and cleaner look is much appreciated.

Back panel connections are standard. One standard phone line port to connect to your phone wall outlet, four Ethernet RJ45 ports, a reset button, a power connector, and an on/off button. The two antennas screw on in seconds.

For me connections were easy. I connected it to my phone line, and then a single RJ45 Ethernet patch cord into my Cisco 8 port gigaswitch already connected to my NAS devices and the 6 cables routed to different locations in my home. I connected the phone line, the one Ethernet patch cord, plugged the power transformer into my UPS device, and screwed on the antennas to their threaded mounts. I powered it on and left the office.

Setup

So far the TP-Link TD-W8960n shined, but where it really shined was in the setup. Type into your browser URL bar "192.168.1.1" and you're immediately rewarded with the login window. The default `admin/admin' user/pass combo gets you into the main menu.

I'm not going to go into the 50 pages of setup choices the user manual lists. I'll just tell you I found their user interface totally intuitive and in less than five minutes I'd configured my PPP0E account information (username/password/VPi&VCI (True supplied)) , set my LAN default address, configured my Wireless security protocol, enabled the DCHP server, entered and tested my dynamic DNS account information (needed to run an FTP, IP cameras, etc), and forwarded 5 different ports thereby enabling my NAS devices, FTP's, IP cameras, and my other LAN devices. I also changed my user name and password information.

Each menu heading expands as necessary into the appropriate sub-headings allowing you to easily find and configure only the areas you need.

In under five minutes I was done and pressing the "update and reboot" button was surprised to see the internet come on-line, the wireless connect to my laptops, NAS's worked, FTP's functioned fine, and all this on the first try and without help from the True Somchai's! What a pleasure.

I will say this, there are MANY menu choices, and even for functions you'll recognize there will be more choices than you're previously been familiar with. Looking through the menu choices I saw it was configurable and supported every major VOIP service, game, and device I've ever heard of. This is the most complete user BIOS I've ever seen.

More, it gives you three login choices. You can assign an administrator with full privileges, a support user/pass set in the event you need TP-Link's excellent customer service, and a User login if you just want to limit certain users to logging on selected VPN's or games.

There is also a complete statistics and logging center so you can keep track of line drops, line condition, up time, and about 100+ other line controls. The Diagnostics section tests every line condition for you and the help section explains each test.

What a great User Interface!

Performance

Two minutes to install, five minutes to configure my setup (and I have a complex setup), and a `save/reboot' later I was up on line and I haven't dropped or had to power cycle since!

Usually I don't review hardware until using it for a few months, but I've tested/reviewed enough of these modems/routers to know when one is working perfectly and without flaw and the TP-Link TD-W8960n is without flaw. It's possible it will fail electronically, and if it does I'll update this review at the end. If you don't see an update at the end of this review, it means this device is still working perfectly.

Going to Speedtest [...] I confirmed I was actually exceeding my 16mbps download speed. A few months back my True technician told me he'd tweaked the node downstairs to give me 20mbps and now I was actually seeing 20mbps. My upload speed was pegged at the max 1mbps speed. I then went to Pingtest [...] and immediately saw I was now pinging all A's and B's on my line condition where before the best I could get was a C-, usually D's and F's.

But the real proof is in using the net. Page to page loads are much faster, my Slingbox is slinging 30% faster than the best I've seen before, and my torrents are moving almost twice as fast! The proof in the pudding so to speak.

Wifi performance you ask? I'm not only seeing an approximate 40-50% greater signal strength and range, but the speed gains via the Wireless N are huge. It's like having an entirely new Wifi service.

For the next five days I held my breath waiting for a drop that has yet to happen, or the need for a power-cycle which hasn't happened either.

Because of the feedback and questions I received after last week's review of the Dlink, and noticing I wasn't the only one experiencing sub-standard internet service, and because this TP-Link TD-W8960n setup easily and performed flawlessly, I decided to write this review immediately, and if any problems arise in the future I'll update this review at the end.

I couldn't be more pleased, there are zero glitches, and anyone can set one of these up. Other than the color (white) I have zero complaints and only praise.

Oh, I got mine on Amazon for $72 USD's. I don't know if they're available locally, but I'll take a look next time I take a safari through Pantip and I'll let you know.

1.0 out of 5 starsRun very hot, hard to setup, slower than expected, vpn dropped often
Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2013
I bought the product base the review, despite some of the very favorable and bad review. However, if given a chance, I would not buy the product again.

I bought this to replace 6-year old Siemens cable modem, and the Linksys N-series router. The router was still good.

The installation went very well. However, to enable the wireless connection, it did not work for various devices in the house, eventually I had to manually go into router to set a less secure personal WEP in order for some of the devices to work. I am pretty sure someone would run into the same problem with not compatible wireless security keys.

Did not see any differences on speed of the modem and router with speed test vs. the old one.

The one thing I do not like is the modem/router turn very hot in about 1 hour of work. Time will tell if it will last, but with this kind of thermal, I am very skeptical.

Update: for a week now, I feel I hate this router than Linksys even more. VPN keep dropping and ...
Update: the router is dead now. It keeps droping network.

I would not recommend this product. Avoid at all cost.

Disappointed.

I replaced my old Dsl modem and belkin router because one or the other was slowly going out and needed to constantly be reset. After receiving the TP-Link WL RT TD-W8960N 300M WL-N I was happy to find easy to follow instructions with whatever information you need based on your internet service provider and location. The set-up cd worked flawlessly and everything from naming the network to setting a password was easily done. I use ATT dsl and was sure to have my account name and network password at the start. Set-up was completed in approximately fifteen minutes and has been running flawlessly for the past week. I have had no dropped connections and have used the router wirelessly with five different devices, mac mini, pc, iphone, and two WII's. I have noticed improved speeds over my old wireless g connection. I'm only giving four stars at this time but will move up to five if I have no problems in the next few months.

5.0 out of 5 stars Centurylink Users Be Aware!
Reviewed in the United States on January 11, 2013

UPDATE 2/04/2015: So glad to see my original review was helpful to so many!! The TP Link in my house started dropping the connection off and on about a month ago so I ordered a new one(it seems the blue one has replaced the one I originally ordered) and installed it today. I installed using the Resource CD that was included so I didn't have to do steps as shown in my first review. When prompted to choose my DSL provider I chose the Centurylink that had Dynamic IP LLC (there were 2 Centurylink options). I kept the VPI 8, VCI 35. It then asked for Connection Type (which is same as WAN Link Type apparently?) and IPoE was not an option, BRIDGE is the option that worked for me. Then it asked about Encapsulation, LLC worked. 2 laptops and 2 cellphones are wirelessly working off the new TP Link. Not sure if 2 years is good or bad for the life of this, but my other TP Link at the office still works fine but is used less. End of update!
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First off, the product works well once you get it set up. However, if you have Centurylink as your DSL provider, be aware that the setup instructions given by TP-Link will get you to a point where you are showing that you have the modem/router set up correctly but you will not receive a signal wirelessly.

When I called TP-Link Customer service to walk through setting up (because it's not working they way they said to set up) they said I would have to contact Centurylink for the info needed to set up. Then, Centurylink (because they apparently only want you to rent/buy modem/routers from then instead of buying them elsewhere cheaper and with faster delivery) will NOT give you the info needed to set up unless you buy some monthly "help with non-Centurylink modems" plan, or buy one of their modem/routers!!!

After 4 phone calls between TP-Link and CenturyLink which were mostly a waste of time (except the last one to CenturyLink, I did have the satisfaction of telling them what I think of their ways considering the amount of $$$ I pay them for both my home and my office telephone and DSL accounts), I finally figured out the settings needed to set up with Centurylink, and because I am a nice person I will give them to you so you won't have to spend 4 hours and much frustration getting this set up (I set up 2 of them, one for office and one at home, the home one took 4 hours, the office one maybe took 4 minutes because I had the settings straight).

1. Connect everything per TP-Link Instructions
2. Open IE (will show unable to connect to internet)
3. In address bar type 192.168.1.1
4. For Username type in: admin and for Password type in: admin
5. Choose Quick Setup
6. These are the important things you need which Centurylink will refuse to provide: VPI: 8, VCI 35, WAN Link Type: IPoE, and it's a Dynamic IP Protocol (you will have places on the setup where you choose this information)

Hopefully, Centurylink won't change any of their setting in order to further irritate future non-Centurylink modem/router purchasers.

I purchased this product after reading the reviews on this site. Set up was truly simple it allows you to create your own security key and and rename if wanted. It looks really stylish but I DID NOT notice any improvement on wi-fi connection or internet improvement. I do ALOT of online gaming and when I connected this wirelessly to my ps3 I immediately had a NAT type of strict (first time this has ever happened). The unit failed to consistently keep a connection and yes it does definitely heat up. All in all I wasnt overly pleased with the unit and that is why I sent the item back. Ill just try and figure something else out. I adjusted settings and btw the guy from Tp-Link was awesome and basically told me that not a difference in productivity from wireless g to wireless n routers.

5.0 out of 5 stars CenturyLink here, slow connection, then fast with minor adjustment
Reviewed in the United States on December 7, 2014

First, I like this modem a lot. I never imagined it would make such a difference in speed and signal strength.

The top rated comment about the easy route to connection with CenturyLink does not apply to my area of CenturyLink. However, I found the proper settings on the CenturyLink website, without talking to the help. I forgot where it was, exactly, but I think I had to put in my zip code to get the setup info for my area. Also, I should mentioned that I have CenturyLink ADSL2+, so you've got to make sure your CenturyLink uses ADSL instead of another protocol(VDSL) before you order this modem.

Also, my setup for the PPPoE protocol (yours may differ, depending on your area of CenutryLink) involved having to know my CenturyLink "PPP" login name and password, which is something I had written down from years ago, when I first opened my DSL account with them. So, if you don't know that, you're going to have to contact them to get it. There are other more advanced ways of getting your login name and password without contacting CenturyLink, if you don't have it written down, but they are as time consuming and complex as the whole set up of the modem is. I know this because at first, I didn't remember I had it all written down.

So, I got it working, but it was 20% slower than my ancient Qwest Actiontec with expensive, separate Netgear router. So I did a little search, and found a simple thing to bring it up to good speed:

Go to the TP modem address (198.162.1.1), the same one you type in the address of a browser to go to to set up the thing with. Instead of clicking on "Quick Setup," click on: WIRELESS, then ADVANCED, then change the "Mode" from 11bgn to 11bg. I read this on the web and it worked for me. Save/apply changes. You're done. See if it's faster than it was before.

The best thing about this modem for me is the signal strength/range on the wireless. I keep the modem in a storage area quite far from my computer and devices and this has a better range than my Netgear router did. I can even walk 70 feet from the house with no problem, and pages of images seem to come up a little faster on the screen and I have a slow broadband connection as set by CenturyLink. I don't know if it's the improved wireless signal or some packet handling ability of the modem which makes it better.

Better yet, I got a "damaged box" one at a considerable discount, and aside from a few splits in the inner cardboard liner, it looked brand new and perfect to me. I'll update this if it conks out. So far, I'm glad my old modem started going south. It was dropping my connection every once in a while, and CenturyLink claimed it's probably the modem. We'll see, but it was 5 years old, so I believe them. Plus, they aren't really gouging people anymore on trying to sell their own overpriced stuff exclusively.

I have a wireless cam, and had to hook that up to the modem and reset the wireless setting in the software to recognize this new modem but, again, that works better too. A tablet is much easier to change. Just go into settings, and point it toward your new device.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not compatible with AT&T DSL Direct Service

My current ATT 2-Wire 2701HG-B has been resetting itself few times a day. After reviewing different modem/routers in Amazon, I bought TP-Link WL RT TD-W8960N 300M WL-N. Shipment came super fast. It took me 40 minutes to disconnect 2-wire and install TP-Link. Then, the nightmare began. The speed is like crawl.

My DSL Direct suppose to provide 6M/768K service. I got speedtest.net reading of 1.7Mbps/0.55Mbps with 2-wire unit. This unit show 0.24-0.32 Mbps down stream and 0.61 Mbps upstream during speedtest. The down stream is way off. I called ATT. They indicated that they did not support this modem/router. I need to talk to the manufacturer. Called TP-Link Support. They insisted that I should get P2P software and download a file to test the speed. I understand the limit of speedtest.net. However, everything is relative. I was comparing the Speed test result with all other parameters remain the same except the modem/router. The result should be able to pinpoint the problem of their unit. Anyway, I installed Shareaza and download a file from TP-Link website. Shareaza show download speed is mere 22KB. After a few email communication with their tech support, change a few setup parameters, nothing seems work. They have to refer it to their headquarter in China. They got back to me the next day. They wanted me to return the unit to seller and get a replacement. I really don't feel it is a hardware problem. Wireless and rounter function looks fine. I believe it was the firmware and setup parameters did not communicate well with ATT Server.

I don't want to spend another day working on the replacement. The chance to fail seems high. So I returned it for refund. My experience is for AT&T High Speed DSL Direct Service. Other ISP may be Ok. I gave credit for TP-Link, the apperance of the unit, fast delivery and 24/7 customer service. Thank you for reading. If you have better unit you can recommend for replacing ATT 2-wire unit, please let me know.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome modem/router

This is a long review -but if it helps one person save all the time I spent trying to solve my problem then it is worth it.
I had an old (@6 years) Westell modem/router from Verizon They were taken over by Frontier. My problems started with my ATT microcell, it was dropping connections throughout the day, every day. I had to reboot it to get it connected to my cell phones. My XP desktop connected fine with ethernet and my HP Touchpad and Vista laptop connected wirelessly OK, but my Windows 7 laptop nor none of my friends Windows 7 laptops could connect wirelessly. I bought a Sony Blu-Ray player and it couldn't connect wirelessly either. Nor could my Dish Hopper. When I got new Galaxy S3 smartphone for me and my wife, they couldn't connect with their Wifi to the internet either. I truly believe that a person should try to solve a problem on their own, because that is how you gain knowledge. I was seaching forums on the internet and trying everything they recommended, nothing worked. I tried going into the modem/router settings and changing parameters and nothing made a difference. Hours of trying to solve the problem and no success. The final straw was when my new Samsung SmartTV couldn't connect wirelessly that I bit the bullet and called Frontier and explained my problem. We went into the modem/router settings and there were setting the tech needed to change that were not there and he said call customer support for a new modem/router. They wanted $19.95 installation and $6.95 per month rental for an under $60.00 modem/router that I could get from Amazon. To top it off, the installation fee was really shipping and handling since they ship it to me and I had to install it. Thanks but, "No Thanks". The tech was great and gave me the parameters I needed to set up my own modem/router for their DSL. Looked at the reviews and picked this modem/router. In under an hour I had every piece of equipment on line and have not had to reboot the microcell one time in the weeks since I installed this modem/router. Awesome, awesome, awesome.

4.0 out of 5 stars Replaced AT&T 2wire 2701HG, very happy with my purchase.

My 2Wire 2701HG modem/router was resetting itself constantly indicating it was time to replace it. I called at&t and they where asking $99 for a wireless modem/router which I found it was to much money. I was undecided between the TP-Link TD-W8960N and the Actiontec GT784WN. I read the reviews on both items and I decided for the cheaper one (TP-Link)crossing my fingers hoping everything go well with the installation. I didn't read any of the manuals that came in the package (first mistake I make). I just connected everything and ran the cd. I follow all the instructions until I get to the point where I have to select my provider but the problem was that there where like 5 options for at&t so I choose the one I though was correct. At the end of the setup I receive and error and the configuration wasn't able to complete. It was too late and I decided to do it next day. Following day I ran the cd config again and was getting the same error for that reason I decided to read the manual. In one of the books I found information regarding which at&t configuration to select (depending on which state you leave). To make this shorter I access the router thru the web browser (192.168.1.1) and ran the modem/router configuration from there. I right down my logging information and finish the configuration, the internet light come on indicating I had internet connection. I try to open a web page (yahoo, goggle) and I was redirected to an att password reset page I was unable to complete what the att page was asking for that reason I ended up calling att. They told me they where not going to be able to access my router because they are not trained to work with this one, I tell them that I was able to access the modem/router configuration page by myself and right down the information it was going to be needed (internet logging info username and password) for my surprise the password was going to be different from the one I used with the 2wire router/modem and was provided by att after that I was able to access the internet without problem, I found that it was faster even-though I have the lowest speed.
I would recommend to:
1) Read the manuals to identify which provider connection is offered in your area
2)Run the configuration cd
3) If the cd configuration didn't work for you access the modem/router thru the web browser
4)Run the configuration that is built in the modem/router
5) If the adsl and internet lights are on you should be able to access the internet if you are redirected to the provider page probably you will need to contact them so they can provide you a new password (in my particular case)

I hope this can help. Maybe what I just write sounds complicated but it is not. Give it a try, is $50 cheaper.

2.0 out of 5 stars Works decently but has a major problem (hence the two star rating)

I have AT&T DSL and have had a few issues with the wireless gateway they sent me so I decided to buy this one (I bought this back in September of 2012 and am writing this review in June of 2013). I like how easy it was to set up and the amount of customization you can do with the settings. I also get a fairly decent speed (for what you can expect from AT&T). When connected via ethernet, the gateway works just fine most of the time. The problem lies in the wireless.

I have spent hours upon hours customizing the wireless settings and the gateway settings. I've used programs such as inSSIDer to see what wireless routers are around and change my settings for the least interference with these routers. This gateway at absolutely random times, and if we're putting a slight load on it, will shut off the wireless for about a minute (as in you can't locate it and lose connection to it if you are connected). The system log on the gateway doesn't show any sort of error and ethernet usually works perfectly while this happens. We only have one phone jack in the house so we can't move the router to a more convenient location for ethernet access so using wireless is a necessity. It's really annoying when you're working on something or gaming and the wireless drops for no reason. This isn't a problem with our computers because our cell phones, tablets, game consoles, and all computers are unable to connect to the wireless when this happens. I would normally think it would be a problem with our network, but since ethernet works during these random spats and the wireless disappears when no one is connected to it, it's obviously a flaw in the gateway. I would try returning it or exchanging it but the amount I paid for this thing doesn't justify the amount it would cost me to send it back.

Edit 6/18/13: purchased an "Actiontec Wireless N DSL Modem Router GT784WN" http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005EW2GR4/ref=oh_details_o01_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 and hooked it up and have had absolutely no problems with it. Hooked it up with relatively little problems (problems were due to username and password errors but it had nothing to do with the router/modem) and it runs absolutely beautifully. I've had no disconnections or even lag spikes.
