Troublemaker: A Novel Kindle Edition

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 7,099 ratings

A thrilling, fast-paced novel of romantic suspense from sensational New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Linda Howard.

For Morgan Yancy, an operative and team leader in a paramilitary group, nothing comes before his job. But when he’s ambushed and almost killed, his supervisor is determined to find out who’s after the members of his elite squad—and why. Due to worries that this unknown enemy will strike again, Morgan is sent to a remote location and told to lay low and stay vigilant. But between a tempting housemate he’s determined to protect and a deadly threat waiting in the shadows, keeping under the radar is proving to be his most dangerous mission yet.

The part-time police chief of a small West Virginian mountain town, Isabeau “Bo” Maran finally has her life figured out. She’s got friends, a dog, and a little money in the bank. Then Morgan Yancy shows up on her doorstep. Bo doesn’t need a mysterious man in her life—especially a troublemaker as enticing and secretive as Morgan.

The harder they fight the intense heat between them, the closer Morgan and Bo become, even though she knows he’s hiding from something. But discovering the truth could cost Bo more than she’s willing to give. And when Morgan’s cover is blown, it might just cost her life.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

At the start of this exceptionally engaging novel of romantic suspense from bestseller Howard (Shadow Woman), a sniper shoots and nearly kills Morgan Yancy, the leader of the deadly top-secret GO-Team (global offensive), outside his condo in the Washington, D.C., area. Axel MacNamara, Morgan's boss, concludes that the Russian mob was behind the attempted hit, but Morgan can't think of any reason why he was targeted. Concerned for Morgan's safety, Axel chooses to hide him in the little town of Hamrickville, W.Va., where Axel's stepsister, Isabeau "Bo" Maran, is the police chief. Fiercely independent Bo, who lives with her golden retriever, Tricks, resents the imposition of caring for Morgan, who's slowly recovering from his chest wound. But Bo and curious townspeople adjust to his presence as the uneasy relationship between the stepsiblings deepens. Eventually, Morgan and Bo rehash his shooting and uncover a vital clue that allows Morgan to set a trap with himself as bait. Howard's strong characters, including Tricks and a number of Hamrickville locals, keep the pages turning until the climactic confrontation. Agent: Robin Rue, Writers House. (May)\n

Last November I read my first Linda Howard book, the second novel in the GO-Team series called ‘The Woman Left Behind’. I absolutely loved that book. So when I saw a great deal on Amazon for ‘Troublemaker’ the first book in the series. I just had to get it and started reading as fast as I could. ‘Troublemaker’ can be read as a standalone.

In ‘Troublemaker’ we meet Morgan Yancy. Morgan is a team leader of a GO team and has just arrived home after being away on a job for months. Shortly after arriving home he gets ambushed and almost dies when some stranger tries to kill him. To get his strength back and lay low for a little while, Morgan stays with the stepsister of one of his colleagues Bo Maran. Bo doesn’t really trust people easily. And Morgan is stubborn as hell, and seems to be having a lot of secrets. Bad news if you ask Bo. But soon Morgan and Bo get to know each other better. Unfortunately that’s when Morgan’s life starts catching up with him.

I had some high hopes for ‘Troublemaker’, and I must say I really enjoyed reading this book. This book starts really exciting and before I knew what was going on I was totally pulled into the world of Bo and Morgan and I couldn’t stop reading. Both main characters Bo and Morgan are really fun to get to know. Especially because they aren’t like your average main characters. For one they both aren’t very good in being social, and secondly they both have some baggage.

The romance between Morgan and Bo starts with a simmer, and ends all hot and heavy. And I loved that about this read. You really get excited reading about these two and I couldn’t get enough of them.

The suspense in this book wasn’t as exciting as I would have liked, but I definitely enjoyed it. It just started pretty good, and near the end I found the suspense ending a little to abrupt. It felt rushed and I really wanted to know what was going on.

Overall ‘Troublemaker’ was a fun read I’d definitely enjoyed.

This story definitely starts out with a bang as Go-Team leader Morgan Yancy is shot and nearly killed one night just outside of his apartment building. When he finally regains consciousness, he recalls the events that led up to the ambush that nearly cost him his life but can offer no clue as to why he was targeted. His supervisor, concerned for Morgan's continued well-being and for the well-being of the Go-Teams that he manages in general, sends Morgan off to recuperate in the least likely of places, the remote small-town where his estranged step-sister is the part-time sheriff. Given the fact that they despise each other, Axel the supervisor offers Bo Maran a substantial amount of money to house and care for his employee while he recuperates, but it is the agent's weakened state that draws on Bo's heartstrings and causes her to grudgingly agree to her step-brother's odd and possibly dangerous request.
As the days pass, a wary friendship develops between Morgan and Bo, helped along by Bo's beautiful and brilliant dog Tricks who is an essential character in this story, every bit as much so as the humans are.
But as time goes by things get complicated, Morgan's feelings for Bo continue to grow as he becomes more attached to her, her dog and her home town. Working diligently to regain his physical strength and to solve the mystery behind his shooting, he also becomes involved in the day to day life of his host and the crimes that plague her small town, specifically a particularly nasty domestic violence dispute that leads to Bo being hurt.
Meanwhile, Axel and the other Go-Team members are no closer to solving the mystery behind their teammate's shooting and with that being the case, the culprits are free to come up with a new plan to end the agent's life.
I really liked the pacing and details of this story. There was a lot going on, on more than one front and it all blended well together, creating an air of suspense as the mystery remained unsolved and the danger loomed ever closer. The romance between Bo and Morgan was a nice slow-burn and heats up as the action does which somehow made perfect sense. All in all, this was a really good read and I hope to see more from this series.

I love this book! I have read it so many times I've lost count. I love the way it mixes romance with tension, two separate threats running at the same time interspersed with the building attraction between the two main characters. And Tricks the dog! Having always been a cat person until dog-sitting for a friend, I understand now the pull dogs have on the heart, and just loved the way LH portrayed that dog in the book. Having read nearly all of her books, I know she is perfectly capable of writing a book where the tension constantly builds, and never gives the reader a break. I don't believe this book was ever meant to be one of those. I think the book was always intended to be an equal blend of fear and humor. I have found I prefer her books that are a mixture of funny and scary, and this one fits into that category perfectly.

I also like the characters, Bo who has learned the hard way to depend on herself, and Morgan, the tough military man who hates being laid up and fights the weakened body he suddenly finds himself in. Writing believable characters is challenging, IMHO, and LH has managed to give us an entire town full of completely rounded out people. The feud between Bo and her stepbrother has gone on for at least a decade, but both have contributed their own resentment to the mix.

All in all, I thoroughly enjoy this book, and now I think I need to pull out my Kindle and visit them again!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mystery, romance and an unforgettable dog named Tricks!
Reviewed in Canada on September 5, 2016
Suspense, mystery, romance, and fun. This novel has it all: a strong female heroine, police chief of a small town, a man on the run, and a beautiful and charming golden retriever call Tricks. When mysterious stranger Morgan is dumped on Bo by her stepbrother he offers her, as well as trouble, a chance to pay off a stack of old debts.
Will romance bloom? Well, that depends on Bo's dog Tricks. There will be mystery and adventure in this novel but what makes it so entertaining is the character of that dog Tricks. Mysterious and dangerous Morgan won't get anywhere with Bo unless he can first win over the dog. $100,000 would go along way to clearing up the debts that Bo accumulated while speculating in real estate. However, Morgan brings danger into her life and risks the life of her beloved golden retriever, Tricks. Tricks emerges as a character of her own. As well as beautiful, she is also intelligent and loves attention. Can two lonely humans learn how to care for each other? Yes they can, when they learn to share their love and devotion for their dog. This book can provide both chills down the spine and heartwarming emotion. Get this book. It won't let you down!
