What's not to like about literary/books cartoons?  Fun little collection.  I didn't get all of them but several made me laugh out loud.

This is a mixed bag of cartoons. Some are reprinted from the New Yorker (and these tend to be the best ones), and some are meh cartoons by New Yorker cartoonists. These are probably the ones rejected by the New Yorker. The cartoonist superstars in this collection include Roz Chast, Charles Addams, Sidney Harris, S. Gross (one of the co-editors of the book), Thomas Cheney, and many, many more. As with many of them, when they are good, they are very good, but alas, when not, well, we see some of the examples here.

As this book is from 1988, there are many, many typewriter sight gags, which, alas, have not aged so well. This book will make for a semi-amusing afternoon, but is not really one that you want to go back to and peruse.

Back in the 1980s people wrote books with typewriters and printed them on dead trees while other people read them and thought themselves clever. Still others drew cartoons about this phenomenon. These are some of those cartoons. For the literary minded who remember the 80s.

This is an amusing look at writers with blocks, finicky readers, moody editors, and a wry sideways glance at promotional stunts and desktop publishing. While it's not sidesplitting funny, it certainly is an amusing little collection around its theme and good for more than a chuckle or two. If you are in the writing or publishing business you'll recognize all the characters and situations and it will be a lot funnier for you than for most.
