About the Author

Used this book on our recent trip to Japan in October. We were there for two weeks and planned our itinerary ahead of time using this book only. I must say I wouldn't travel anywhere without purchasing and researching these lonely planet books beforehand. The one thing I regret is forgetting this book at home on our trip! Luckily we had everything planned ahead of time, still would've been nice to refer to it from time to time. I will be buying lonely planet for our next adventures as well.

I've worked in Japan for a number of years and this book is well written and very descriptive of Japan. The detailed maps are fantastic and the information is very useful, even to someone who has been there over 25 times. My wife and I are planning another trip to Japan to areas we've never been and this book is one of the best travel books on Japan that I've read. I bought a second copy for my wife so that we can both read it at the same time.

The pull out maps were pretty useless. They cover too small a section of the city, and aren't referred to at all in the text. I have to ask why they even bother!

heir coverage of the Matsumoto area was great. I'd discount their comments about renting a car and driving if you're from California. If you regularly drive Highway 1, Highway 9, visit the Sierras or the Trinity Alps, you're used to much worse driving conditions than anywhere in Japan. Rent a car and go where you please! Their recommendation of Sugimoto Ryokan was outstanding. Their recommendation of Ougatou more questionable, not because the hotel was bad, but because they probably should have prefixed it, "which was the best season to go?", with the note that late Spring might not have the best conditions. Their disparagement of the Yudanaka Monkey Park was unwarranted, but if the book hadn't contained a sidebar on it I wouldn't have known about it and wouldn't have been diverted so we could go there. Their mention of Obuse was also a worthy side trip.

I bought this book 3 years ago and it's been my go-to guide for all things Japan! I've been there 4 times now and use this book for every step of my planning and travels.

Great reference book if you're planning to make a trip to Japan. Plenty of useful info around major cities. Some of the smaller towns might not be complete but offer insight if you want put it on your list of areas to check out. Contains fold out map for Tokyo. Gives guidance of what to do such as at a Onsen (hot spring bath houses.). Plenty of cities/towns listed to keep you occupied.

Ordered the new edition because I had misplaced my old copy, so I was quite familiar with Lonely Planet travel guides. The new edition is much better than the old one. My sole complaint is that the font is a bit small, making it nearly impossible to read without my reading glasses. Otherwise, this is the best travel guide available!

This guidebook serves the purpose of a general introduction to a large and complex country. This was the guidebook that everyone was carrying around. Because Japan is massive, the specifics on certain regions of Tokyo were somewhat limited. If that is your principle destination, you might be better off with a different guide. Places in Japan can be hard to find and this guidebook was just "ok" at offering directions. The detachable map was somewhat helpful but the side that covered Tokyo was mostly about the downtown area of a city that has innumerable neighborhoods. You won't go wrong with this guide but it might now answer some salient questions for you.

Much better than the Lonely Planet Tokyo, which I threw in the trash. The main writer knows his stuff. We went to some wonderful off the beaten path restaurants that he recommended. If I go back to Japan, I'm definitely using this book. Only book I needed for Tokyo and Kyoto.

5.0 out of 5 stars Très complet
