Size, Weight and Capacity does Matters!
My sister gave her MacBook to me after using it for more than 2 years, the memory itself is full and can barely add more photos and videos. The size, weight and it's memory capacity caught my attention and thats why I purchased it. You can carry it wherever you go. I had no problem transferring and saving all my sister's file into the portable external hard drive. Also I don't have to worry if in case it was stolen or lost it as it contains security passcode.

I am running the beta of Mac OS High Sierra. This works perfectly with that OS. It is truly plug and play and seamlessly works with time machine. I backed up my Mac in about 15 minutes. Granted I don't have a ridiculous amount of files, but that's faster than any other hard drive I've tried. This drive looks durrable, but the design on the outside may be easily scratched. One other thing is if you're looking for an SSD hard drive, this isn't it. But it is an excellent standard hard drive!

Great! Very tiny about the size of a notecard. works well and that little weird design seems to have a function, as it keeps the hard drive from sliding on slanted surfaces and provides a very decent grippy surface. I had an old WD from back in like 2007 or 2008 (and it still works flawlessly) but just wanted a new one. the old one even works with my windows and Mac without any additional drivers needed. hard drive came on point with 1.01 TB (I hate when they short you) so another thing I was pleased about. functions fast and works well.

This is a very effective device to have if you have large photo or video files. For its size, it holds a huge chunk of data, and USB 3 is reasonably fast for transfers. I also like very much the security features that come with it – although the password dialog box often doesn't open automatically as it should, requiring you to get at password entry via WD Utilities. Only other thing...I know it's likely that the people who designed this drive think the exterior is really neat, but I don't. The earlier design with only 3TB capacity looked much more trustworthy with metal on the exterior, instead of the all plastic housing for this drive. But bottom line, this drive works well, in spite of it being ugly. I've had 19 different Western Digital compact drives for Mac over the past few years, and only one of them failed after very heavy use.

In any Art school, we mainly use Mac (and I have a MacBook Air as my laptop) as it usually has the best editing software on there along with loading time being efficient. I bought this as I will be needing an external hard drive for the next four year in college making videos and animating in class. So far, the drive works well. I did a lot of research on what drives to use and since I need one specifically for Mac, this was perfect. WD usually has a good long-term history for good drives so I got this. So far so good.

***While it is programmed ready for Mac, hence why it says "for Mac," you can re-format the hard drive to make it useful on Windows too although it's quite a process and they give you instructions how to do it. I am unsure if it can be used interchangeably with Mac and Windows. The glossy side of the drive is easily scratch-able and a fingerprint magnet, so I recommend buying a hard case along with purchase!

I thought it would be a good idea to retire my desktop Iomega back-up drive. It works fine with Time Machine on the Mac, but takes up space and must be plugged in. I have three Passport for the Mac drives (the tiny siver ones that were popular), one for three computers at home and work, and they are nice. This one, though... a disaster. Tried to use Time Machine and after only partial back-up, just went dead. Tried again, and same. Now can't get it to be recognized, plug in, then nothing. So, tried on two other computers, one nothing, one sees it first time, then not again. Tried Mac disk repair, and found lots of problems. So, want to just send it back, but now some of my folders are on the drive and I cannot connect to delete them!!! I would not send it back with my files on there!! What a mess! What a piece of junk! Can this possibly be the same drive as the baby silvers, just in another case? So, I have an expensive paper weight. **So, you wonder, why did I not just keep my Iomega big drive? Well, I would like to go back in time (Time Machine), and not place the order. But, my Iomega is now attached again and doing its job. Warning, skip this drive.

... it will continue to work. I put off buying one of these because I really wasn't that worried about it but the more I was investing in programs, I decided to stop being cheap and do it. This particular model, in this size seemed to have the most consistent and best reviews even though I wanted the shiny cool aluminium one.
Needless to say I downloaded mega photos and music to it as well as backing up to time machine. (I try to do it at least, daily) Anyway, sure enough as I was trying to drag a wad of photos from Dropbox to the Photos program one night, I destroyed the Mac's photos program. So after many hours of reading tutorials I got angry and decided to use this back up drive to reverse my computer back to the way it was the day before. It didn't take as long as I thought plus it was a complete mirror image and all I had to do was resign in a few places and do the fingerprint thing again. So, yes, I am very glad I bought this item and it has already saved my a**.once. Will def by another for my mega music library. Also the fact it is was instant plug and play for a Mac was a huge bonus. It does come with a cord but will not plug into the newest MacBook Pro unless you have a dongle to make it compatible. Just FYI and they aren't that much.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect reliable HDD for your MAC backups or storage solutions
Reviewed in Canada on April 13, 2018
    Capacity: 2TBStyle: USB-A readyVerified Purchase
I was new to the MAC world purchasing the latest 27", and needed a reliable backup HDD. I have always used Western Digital HDDs because they have never failed me in 18 years. Seagate has this tendency. Pleased with purchase, sturdy, not as portable as a passport design, however this will be kept in storage so it does not matter. I purchased a 4TB as well to work with video and audio and it's fast and excellent. I was concerned as everyone was saying if you are using an external HDD, you must go with a GTech or something equally as powerful. I am satisfied so far working on FCPX and have no issues.
PROS: Very quiet, sleek, straight edge design makes it really easy to store unlike rounded irregular sized HDDs, fast, reliable
CONS: no led light to indicate if it's on or running. It's so silent I cannot tell it's running unless I click on it from the Mac to open it's contents.

I like using these external drives as a backup and archive for my Mac and PC. It is best though, to keep a dedicated WD passport to be used with Time Machine. Also Time Machine does try to back up to one of my other drives, you just need to say no to it, but you do need to re-select Passport again afterwards re-intiate automatic backups. Backup is easy, you just plug the Passport into the Mac and wait. What could be simpler. But always allow backup to complete before doing anything else.

The Passports works well with my PC laptop too, when I render films to them. I do keep my Mac and PC drives separate though. I use USB memory sticks to pass files between my PC and Mac.

I do stress, I buy the right format Passport drive for my Mac or PC.

One most important golden rule; always eject the drive with the computers software before disconnecting. If the drive won't eject, turning off the computer has always worked for me.

Over all I well satisfied with the WD Passport drives, and so far have five of them for different purposes and will buy more of them in the future.
