Product Description
Product Description
True to its high-end G Lens heritage, the SELP18105G lens features two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements for high resolution and contrast throughout the entire zoom range. The first Sony G Lens created specifically for E-mount cameras is true to its heritage, achieving outstanding resolution and contrast throughout the zoom range thanks to an advanced optical design incorporating two ED glass elements and three aspherical elements. From wide angle to medium telephoto, this power zoom lens covers approximately a 6x zoom range with a constant F4 aperture. When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result. As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration. Aspherical lens design dramatically reduces spherical aberration while also reducing lens size and weight. Spherical aberration is a slight misalignment of the light rays projected on the image plane. This is caused by differences in refraction at different points on conventional spherical lenses which degrade image quality in large-aperture lenses. Specially shaped “aspherical” elements near the diaphragm restore alignment of light rays at the image plane, maintaining high sharpness and contrast even at maximum aperture and can also be used at other points in the optical path to reduce distortion. Well-designed aspherical elements can reduce the total number of elements required in the lens, thus reducing overall size and weight. Advanced Aspherical (AA) elements are an evolved variant, featuring an extremely high thickness ratio between the center and periphery. AA elements are exceedingly difficult to produce, relying on the most advanced molding technology to consistently and precisely achieve the required shape and surface accuracy, resulting in significantly improved image accuracy and quality. Gyro sensors built into the lens detect even the slightest movement, and the stabilization lens is precisely shifted to counteract any image blur that might occur. The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills. Only the middle groups of the optical system move to achieve focus, so the overall length of the lens does not change. Other important benefits include fast autofocusing and a short minimum focusing distance. Also, the filter thread at the front of the lens does not rotate, which is convenient if you’re using a polarizing filter. 2013 Sony Electronics All rights reserved. Technology
Circular Aperture
When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Lens-based optical image stabilization

The use of precision, quiet linear motors and technology inherited from high-end Sony professional camcorders results in exceptionally quiet, effective image stabilization that contributes to high-quality movies as well as stills.

UPDATE: updating to 5 stars. The more I use the lens the more I see how all of the benefits outweigh the bulk. Until a lens can offer the zoom capabilities of this lens while offering the high quality construction and pictures in a smaller package, I can't give this lens anything but 5 stars.
This is going to be a brief initial impressions of this lens as I've only had it for a few hours. It came nicely packaged and despite knowing that it was going to be fairly big compared to the kit lens and the Sony 35f1.8, it was a little heavier than I expected Went onto my NEX 5T easy enough and then it was ready to go. The camera with the lens is much more bulky and heavy as expected but the lens has a good quality heft to it and seems well constructed.
I took some test shots in moderate sunlight as well as mild indoor lighting. I did full 105mm and 18mm shots. My 35f1.8 takes noticeable crisper shots and the 1.8 aperture has outstanding background blur and bokeh, but I didn't buy this lens expecting it to rival that lens. I bought this lens as a versatile lens with good glass and good zoom and I believe I got it. I opted for this lens instead of more zoom with the 18200 and 55210 due to price and concerns with some criticisms from online reviewers. This lens has generally favorable reviews and didn't quite break the bank like other zoom lenses could do. The pictures I got were very clear and sharp throughout all the zooming. At full zoom the pictures remained surprisingly crisp and clear and I am very satisfied with the results so far.
You're gonna want a good amount of light as the quality of pictures dropped significantly in poorer lighting situations but with a good amount of light you can expect fantastic quality shots. I knocked off a star because my personal preferences. The lens is big and bulky and while it is meant as a versatile travel lens, it is just nowhere near as travel friendly as my other lenses. However, the tradeoff is for high quality pictures with good zoom and I don't think you can get that without adding a significant amount of bulk and weight to your setup. I think this will be great for travel, outdoor landscape shots, shots of kids playing sports, wildlife, etc... The price seems justified so far and I am happy with my purchase over the other zoom lenses available for this line of cameras. As it stands, I can easily recommend this lens to others and will update my review after I have more experience taking it on a trip shortly.

Something about this lens that I didn't know about until after I started using it, the zoom is as smooth as butter. Definitely helps with videos. I HATED using the 16-50mm kit lens for videos. The zoom was rough and shaky. However this one is so smooth, I love using the zoom. Definitely helps make videos look more professional. Especially since I can keep the F4 across the range. If you do a lot of video, I can't think of a better e-mount lens (under $2000).
The lens feels strong and sturdy. Made of great quality, and these G lenses are highly rated. You can't go wrong with this one. For a point of reference, i'm using it on my a6300.
The lens itself is has very good color and clarity. It's very nice being able to zoom in without having to jack up your gain. Something to be aware of is that it does not function like other lens when focusing on close object. With the kit emount lens (18-200mm) I can use the zoom to create a psuedo macro effect. Not as good, but still looks nice for ring shots. If you zoom in, the focal point can shift dramatically. You have to find a sweet spot with it, but if you have a lossless digital zoom, that should help you as well. This lens is also very light, but doesn't feel at all fragile. A nice little feature with the zoom is that there is no manual/servo switch. Both options are always available to you. This is very nice when you have a zoom lever on your camera. The zoom also is silky smooth. With the kit power zoom lens, if you let stop zooming, it does so immediately, which for video is a bit jarring. This slows down just and bit as if it glides right in position.

The build quality is top-notch and the lens is compact and lightweight, making it easy to carry with me on all of my photography adventures. The zoom range is excellent, providing me with the flexibility to get up close and personal with my subjects or to capture expansive landscapes with ease.
I highly recommend this option for anyone looking for a versatile and high-quality lens. Whether you're a professional photographer or just starting out, this lens is sure to provide stunning results and help you take your photography to the next level.
