I've used Etymotic and foam earplugs, but these are the plugs I keep coming back to. They're comfortable, form a good seal in my ears, don't move around when you're active, and don't make you feel like an alien with antennas sticking out of your ears. I really like having the different grades of protection, allowing you to tweak the scale of attenuation depending on the situation. Going from the Classic (2 levels) to Pro (3 levels), that extra flexibility is all the more appreciated. It would be nice if they released flesh colors, but they're flush enough with your ears that they're not all that noticeable anyways.
Attenuation is not flat, mostly because it changes the way sound gathers in your ear. Your inner ear hearing will be more prominent with ear plugs, so it takes some getting used to especially if you're singing. I recommend keeping them in as much as possible at the gig so you get used to the way they sound and don't adversely affect your performance.
There are some key differences comparing the "Pro" to the "Classic" version that may dictate which version you should go for.
The Classic (Silver/Gold) case is a tube that opens on one end and you throw stuff into it and dump it out when you want to get access to it. The tube is wonderfully compact and can comfortably live on your keychain and/or in your pocket, but it also has a tendency to rattle as you walk with the pegs loose in the chamber. The tube is also air-tight, which means nasty things are more capable of growing on them over time, especially if you don't let them dry before putting them away after a sweaty gig. Finally, the narrow tube makes it more likely for the silicon ear buds to get stuck, meaning time wasted wrestling the buds out of the case.
The Pro (White/Silver/Gold) case is a box--rather than a tube--with a funky hinge mechanism that opens one of the larger faces of the box. The wider case and opening means it's much easier to access your plugs and accessories. The pegs have dedicated mount holes, eliminating the rattling problem that the tube has, and there's no chance of plugs getting stuck in the case. The design isn't 100% airtight like the tube, which means things will stay a little cleaner. The only downside is that it's much larger than the tube, making it less comfortable to keep in your pocket. The Pro version comes with a neckband that connects to your earplugs, which means you don't have to find some place to stash them--and likely lose them--when you're not playing. The neckband attachment system is not very secure (if you yanked on the band with the plugs in your ears, it'd probably come off the plugs), but it's an improvement over no neckband at all. The Pro seems to be made of better materials than the Classic, though that may just be because they're so much newer than my Classics. Finally, I like that the Pro comes with a 3rd plug, just in case you accidentally lose one you can still have both ears protected for the rest of the gig.
These ear plugs come with my highest recommendations! The only thing that may be better would be custom-molded plugs, but I don't have any experience with those to draw on.
====UPDATE 2019/01/15====
Over a year later and these earplugs are still working wonderfully. I bought a second pair to store in my cello case for rehearsals with wind players.
For New Years Eve, I brought these along for my girlfriend and I to use in case the music was too loud. It was WAY too loud, but these earplugs saved the night. Instead of awkwardly hanging out in quieter places of the venue for 30 minutes and then calling it a night, these earplugs allowed us to wander freely and comfortably and even hit the dance floor, resulting in an overall great night out and getting to welcome the New Year together! Great for ears, and great for relationships!!!
I can clearly say I like these and carry them to movies or anywhere there is going to be loud sounds. I use the gold inserts as I want the full protection. You can still talk with them in although it is a bit more difficult as your own voice volume is difficult to hear. I take them in and out depending on the venue. If acts are coming on and there is a break in between I sometimes remove the plugs and once the music starts again I can easily put them back in. I love them and my wife loves them. Worth every cent you pay for the Alpine hearing protection. These really do save your hearing. BTW I have tinnitus and these are a must for me. I know the Etymotic ear plugs have so many more reviews, however, I tried them and they just were not as comfortable as the Alpine ear plugs. The Alpine plugs are softer and IMHO offer as much noise protection.
Just an aside, if you have heard of the group Albannach who play bagpipes and drums (Tribal Scottish music)they have two members who protect their ears. Jackie uses the Alpine protection and if it is good enough for her and always being around extremely loud sounds it is good enough for me.
Addendum (June 1, 2013) - I have been wearing these to every music event and usually movies I attended since I originally wrote the review. The protection has been solid and love the ease of putting them in and taking them out. As others have said, you can put these earplugs in only using your fingers. There really is no need for the insertion tool so don't be afraid if you do lose it as I don't use it and get the plugs to fit in my ears every time without a problem. They have remained extremely comfortable and I truly don't even know I am wearing them.

You can adjust it to you liking with the filter that it comes with, and protect you ears.
Fully recommended.
