Product Description
The subtle taste nuance of a fine red wine only comes out when the wine is thoroughly oxidized. This is easily and elegantly taken care of by the Nuance Wine Finer. In just 30 seconds you can decant a whole bottle of red wine while pouring it into the glasses. The elegant pourer filters out all sediments, pieces of cork and tartar, while a rushing sound of bubbles gives evidence of the efficient oxidizing process. The drip catcher ensures that not a drop is spilled instead the wine runs back into the bottle. A small close-fitting lid keeps any leftover wine fresh for later use. A beautiful, simple and multifunctional pourer, that completely means you never have to apologize that the wine was not uncorked before the guests arrived.

I got one of these in 2017, just to replace today after heavy use.
It does serve a couple purposes for the cost though so you will have to be your own judge. I am reviewing this product from our non-professional point of view in case you are like us and just want to have a couple glasses of red wine frequently and don't want to spend a lot of money to enjoy them. It filters, aerates, provides drip free pouring, and it has a stopper in case you can't finish that third bottle the same night. I doubt it will seal as tightly as some vacuum types so I don't recommend using the stopper and laying the bottle down, although I have not tried this and don't intend to. I also bought the VacuVin kit here on Amazon for that, and it is air tight and you can lay bottles down.
It took a pour or two to get used the time it takes for the wine to leave the bottle once you start to pour as there is a slight delay, so that means the super fine mesh screens are at the very minimum, filtering as claimed. The tool has a non-slip rubberized coating and I made extra sure that I had it in the neck of the bottle securely and upon checking, it came right out with little effort when I pulled it. I wanted to be sure I was inserting it correctly so I was very cautious at first, but nonetheless it never came out or leaked at all while dispensing, glass after glass. Upon finishing the bottle and removing the Finer, all I did to clean it was to run tap water through it (backwards, meaning where the wine was coming out), at which point it was very evident how much filtration occurs. I was really surprised by the amount of sediment trapped. I let it air dry, and I simply store it with my other bar tools.
Do you need this tool? That's hard to say. I read a lot of reviews that claimed it improved the taste. Like I said, we are not an aficionados (yet) so our expectations may be lower than yours. And if you're like my wife and I, and want to try as many reds wines as you can afford to find those couple reasonably priced everyday versions it can't hurt. If nothing else it will make you look like a pro and that you know what you are doing and impress anyone you share your wine with, especially if they think they are pros.
Oh, in case you're wondering what we call a decent tasting, reasonably priced red and would recommend to anyone breaking into the red wine scene, Apothic Red and Menage A Trois are two to start off with. I pay less than 14.00 a .750 bottle here in Maryland.
Enjoy.
Just opening a bottle or swirling will allow aeration to occur; this Nuance does it faster & more efficiently. Aeration triggers oxidation and evaporation which means in part, that some of the unpalatable compounds in your drink will be diminished. Wine can have ethanol notes; that harsh rubbing alcohol smell/taste. Ethanol is very volatile so it really diminishes with aeration & allows the "good" flavors to come thru. This is why many of the "young" wines tastes significantly better after aeration. It won't make a terrible wine taste like ambrosia but it will take an average one & make it better.
The other great thing about this Nuance is that it catches drips & pours really neatly; no more wine rings on the table. Also, the screen will catch any sediment or cork floating in your bottle. This is a beautifully designed and manufactured item. It sits unobtrusively in the bottle.
I always run hot tap water (never soap) through it for a couple minutes after using to rinse away any lingering residue. My hot water is softened in the kitchen so I don't get hard water deposits in it. I'm guessing hard water would cause problems after a while but you could use vinegar periodically to get any mineral deposits cleaned out.
FYI: This is the wine aerator "Cook's Illustrated" recommends.
This products is perfect in almost every way.
1) It aerates the wine nicely
2) It stays in the bottle and in bottles with different or oddly shaped tops
3) It doesn't require 2 hands to operate
4) The mesh is fine enough to filter out both cork pieces and sediment
5) If you accidentally push a cork into the bottle, just put this finer/aerator in and everything will pour normally.
There is ONE single issue with the design, and it is so minor. Sometimes it can take a moment to get the air to flow back into the bottle and get a normal pour going through. Just flip the bottle upright again and the re-pour. Worst case scenario I've had to do this 3 or 4 times before the air flow works. Once a little wine is out of the bottle it never happens again.
This is a fabulous device.
I made a mistake in the past of not pulling it out of the bottle... and throwing one away... now that I'm down to just one, I am very careful to make sure this always gets removed rinsed and put back in the drawer. Very well-made and an excellent product. Worth the price!
