Project light quality is BEAUTIFUL.
Okay... i have no scientific equipment hereto measure with but the quality of this light from this headlamp is superb. I still own a cheap energizer headlamp i picked up at Lowes and it works great but you can tell a difference in the light quality projected. The fall off on the edges is much smoother with the Black Diamond and very "soft" in the wide mode. Great little light. I love the dimmer mode, the lock out mode (helps with my toddler who wants to play with everything) and I enjoyed the instant bright mode button on the side, HOWEVER it can be difficult to turn on and off and I turned it on unintentionally every now and then. In the end this is a great light. Its a light just like all the other no name brands and shines bright but where they differ is in the quality of light projected. Much better on the black diamond

This was an upgrade from an old Black Diamond headlamp that had lasted me for years but just wasn't bright enough for alpine starts or winter trips (80 lumens). I'd also been wanting a lamp with a red light feature for reading or to not wake my tent mates. This headlamp is great. The spot is so strong, I'd be surprised if you needed anything brighter. The flood feature isn't as solid but still plenty bright for general light. The fact that the red light dims is great and really helpful for reading. The locking feature is also handy and helps to keep it from turning on in my bag, which has definitely been an issue before. I also really appreciated that this is essentially waterproof.

As some people mentioned the "button" on the side to bring it to full max brightness is a little strange to get a feel for at first. But after a couple days it became second nature. I've already used this in the rain and snow with no trouble, as well as during a Wilderness First Responder course when we were doing nighttime scenarios by the light of our headlamps. It worked really well. It's not *quite* as comfortable as my last headlamp on my head, but it's still pretty solid. I went running with it both with and without a hat and it stayed in place pretty well. One thing I noticed is that the strap adjustment can get moved pretty easily. But, at the same time, it's really easy to readjust. It takes about 10 seconds. So it's really no big deal for me.

This is a bomber headlamp for a sweet price - I did a ton of research before buying and am really pleased!

         This is officially the finest artificial lighting product I own. I am a night security guard and an avid backpacker unafraid to do an alpine start if it means I reach a key destination or mountain summit earlier in the day. Thus, for both my vocation and my hobby it is imperative that I have adequate lighting that is versatile and tough enough to handle rigors ranging from being harshly bounced around as I am sprinting up a hill to tell rascally teenagers to stop climbing our fence to being submerged accidentally during a rough creek crossing. Enter the Black Diamond Spot Headlamp. The last time I felt so impressed by an electronic I have purchased is when I got my first smartphone 4 years ago. This little headlamp is incredible, and by little I do not mean to say little in its utility but small in weight and size. For this review, since so many other reviewers have already listed out all of the technical specifications and aspects of this headlamp, I am just going to give you my subjective and anecdotal views about using it. First of all, with both the floodlight and spotlight turned on it truly turns night into day as you are walking around. I have never had more confidence in my safety and visibility at night in the outdoors before purchasing this headlamp. I am not kidding, it shines so bright that everything in your light's range and radius is as visible as if the high noon sun was out to guide your way. The great thing about this headlamp though is that you can easily dim the light if you are not looking to fry your friend's retinas like a couple of over-easy eggs. It outshines my 3D Cell Maglite and now I just carry that sucker around for self-defense when I am wearing this headlamp. I am truly impressed and grateful for this headlamp. For less than forty dollars this has impacted and enhanced my work and leisure time pursuits for the best. I cannot encourage you enough to go ahead and buy this headlamp. You can find all of the information you need on it in the description and in other reviews on Amazon, but if you are second guessing yourself I would just say get it and return it if you don't like it (slim chance of that though). This is a review for the new (2016) squarish model Black Diamond Spot. It's the fourth Spot I've owned, and I've used every generation of them.

Compared to the previous model Spot, here are the improvements:
- THE RED MODE IS FINALLY USEFUL! In previous Spots, the red LEDs were uselessly dim.
- This is more waterproof. That's cool, I guess. I haven't used it in sustained rain or submerged it in water yet, but it's nice to have the option to do that.
- The white mode is a bit brighter. It was already absurdly bright, now it is even more so. I've used this while mountain biking and was not lacking for light at all.
- It doesn't start at maximum brightness. When you first click it on, it starts at an intermediate brightness. The full output is completely overkill for most uses, so this reduces the amount that you blind yourself when you first turn it on.

What I don't like:
- THE BATTERY LIFE IS MUCH SHORTER. Expect 1/2 to 1/3 the battery life of the previous Spot. I need to recharge my 750mah Eneloops after a weekend of using this headlamp. Before, I could do several weekend trips between needing to recharge my batteries. Update: see power consumption measurements below. The new Spot consumes more power in some settings, less power in other settings.
- The tap-to-change-brightness feature is bad and annoying. Black Diamond, please stop inflicting this on us. A dozen or so times per night I reach up to adjust the strap or the pointing of the headlamp and accidentally blind myself because I brushed the side of the headlamp and it suddenly switched to max output.
- The one button to do everything is a bit complicated and takes getting used to. Most people, when they first pick up the headlamp, have no idea how to operate it. Reading the manual is basically necessary. The headlamp would be MUCH improved if it had a switch (positions: off, red, wide white, spot white, wide + spot white) and a wheel for adjusting brightness. This is more intuitive and easier to operate, and you wouldn't be constantly blinding yourself by accidentally switching to max output every time you bump the right side of the headlamp.

Update: I connected the current-gen and older-gen Spot headlamps to a power supply and measured their power consumption. Keep in mind that a typical AAA battery has 750 mAH of power.
New (2016 boxy model) Spot:
Flood + spot: 0.811 A (you'll kill your batteries in ~1 hour!)
Spot max: 0.376 A
Spot min: 0.024 A
Flood max: 0.232 A
Flood min: 0.026 A
Red max: 0.083 A
Red min: 0.011 A

Previous-generation (5-LED) Spot:

I was looking for ages and ending up comparing gimmicks vs battery life vs Lumens all vs price - it all got a bit confusing so I plumped for this one. Decent battery, few gimmicks and 200 Lumen. The unit is small and light and the headband is comfortable and easy to adjust even when its on your head. I can vouch for it being waterproof already. The single switch is easy to understand with simple mode switching both from red to white light, has a dimming function and also a lock stopping you accidentally turning it on in your pocket. I do lots of dog waking in woods and fields and I have to say that this is great, light compact and powerful. My 3 D-cell Maglite throws light further but that's like carrying a baseball bat.

Have not yet put it to practical use so I cannot comment much, especially on the long burn time which the manufacturer claims.
However, on first impression, this headlamp appears high quality, very sleek, compact and lightweight, while the light beam quality and features are superior compare to the other headlamps I already have that are in the mid £20 mark.
Having made lots of research recently, I believe this 200 lumen Spot Headlamp currently represents the best value for money.

外見は、BlackDiamondの常道でシンプル。しかし、山での使用に際し色々な使い方を考慮した設計となっている。
操作に多少の慣れが必要では有るが、大光量が必要な深夜行軍、長時間使用が想定される縦走に必要十分なBurnTime。山小屋内での使用時に有効な減光モードや夜間撮影時に有用な赤色光modeも有るなど、よく考えられている。ストラップも単純ながら調整がし易くできておりヘルメットの有無で調整に難儀していた製品とは大違い。
