4.9 4.9 out of 5 stars 215 ratings

Ree Drummond, the #1 New York Times bestselling author of the Pioneer Woman Cooks series of books, and her lovable hound Charlie trade in nap time for game time in Charlie Plays Ball.

With expressive illustrations by Diane deGroat, a delicious recipe from Ree Drummond, and the hilarious antics of Charlie, this picture book is an excellent gift.

Life on the ranch means lots of time outside, either helping out with the cattle or tossing around a ball with the family. From football to soccer to basketball, Charlie’s ready to jump into the game and take his team to victory.

But Charlie’s favorite part of sports comes after the winning goal when everyone breaks for a postgame meal. He may be more of a benchwarmer when it comes to athletics, but Charlie will always be the MVP of dinnertime!

A sweet and funny follow-up to the New York Times bestselling picture book Charlie the Ranch Dog from Ree Drummond, the Pioneer Woman.

Editorial Reviews

From the Back Cover

For Charlie, it's hard work being King of the Ranch. There's napping to do, food to taste, and car rides to take-it's downright exhausting! But it's not all work-there's a lot of play too!

There's always a game to join and a goal to score. From football to soccer to basketball, Charlie is ready to jump in and lend a paw to help the underdogs get the winning point. While Charlie may be an all-star on the field, when it comes to his favorite kind of ball, he has to wait until dinnertime. And at the table, Charlie is the MVP!

Ree Drummond—The Pioneer Woman herself—delivers a slam dunk with this hilarious new story about Charlie—a basset hound who is truly in a league of his own.

Hi! I'm Ree Drummond, also known as The Pioneer Woman. After marrying a cattle rancher, moving to the country, and having babies for ten years, I started a blog on a whim in 2006. There, I shared stories from my childhood, photos of my children growing up in the country, and eventually, recipes I cooked for my family. This eventually led to my first cookbook, which was released in 2009, and two cookbooks since. I love writing about food (and taking photos of food!) both in my cookbooks and on my website. I also love eating the food I write about!

I have enjoyed writing a series of children's picture books based on my very lethargic and malodorous Basset Hound named Charlie. "Charlie the Ranch Dog" has been a sweet experience for me.

My Food Network show, "The Pioneer Woman," premiered in 2011 and it's still being filmed on the Oklahoma ranch I share with my husband and four children.

Visit my website, ThePioneerWoman.com for more up-to-the-minute details!

This is the newest addition to the "Charlie series by Ree Drummond. I have followed Ree Drummond, The Pioneer Woman, for many years. I love all her Charlie Books and her cookbooks. I think this is my favorite of all the Charlie books so far. It is bad to say I have them all and I don't have kids?? Any book in this series would make a great gift for any child. Her cookbooks would make a good gift for any adult. Highly Recommend.

Our grandson absolutely loves all the Charlie the ranch dog books, he won’t let me read any other bedtime story.

This is the first Charlie the Ranch Dog book I've bought for my grandson (who has the same name) but it won't be the last. He loves it and I bet he'll be reading it on his own soon (he's just 3 years old).

This book is excellent! Our two grand children, five and two, both enjoy the story, EXCELLENT illustrations, and looking for the ground squirrel. We almost have the story memorized we have read it so often to our grand children. It is our "coffee table" book of choice.
