Here is short and brief assessment which will include sound quality, build quality and comfort, to help you make a purchase decision
SOUND QUALITY:
Right out of the box I can clearly hear how nice and crisp the mids are. To really enjoy the clarity of the headphones you need to have the volume on 60% plus. When it comes to the highs, they are very good at best. Nothing to write home about. I tested the headphones listening to pop and rock and they were spot on. For 100$ they are a steal! Regarding the lows, they are not bass heavy headphones. It is also very difficult to compare the sound quality with the open back since these are closed and the sound stage cannot be compared. All I can say is if you liked the open back you will really enjoy these. However I feel I would be more comfortable paying 119$ instead of 149$
ONE AMAZING NEW FEATURE: the CABLE now comes with a mic and pause button!
Also please note these are noise isolating. Dont confuse it with noise cancelling.
COMFORT:
Right off the bat I can comfortably say that these are more comfortable than the open back. But what I really like about those are they are noticeably more sturdy on the head than the open back. The open backs move more easily on your head, but with those they feel amazingly snug and have a great fit around the ear. With regards to the inside of the pads they do not touch the tip of my upper ears at all (very very similar to the Bose QC35). I am writing this review with the headphones having been on my head for over and hour and I pretty much forgot I have them on cause they so comfortable.Even the leather padding on the top of the head is significantly more comfortable than the open back and stitched beautifully.
BUILD QUALITY:
These headphones are a quality build with mainly plastic components.
HOWEVER, one thing i noticed immediately is the earpads attract dust like crazy! they are made of a suede like material and are very dark black. They feel amazing but need to be taken care off and will show wear and tear if not used with care. Even the outer part of the earpad which has the logo on it is made of suede. I honestly feel these need to be used indoors to stay in good condition. If you want to use them outside and plan to sweat in them or have them on in the rain DO NOT think of buying them.
PROs: 1) Super comfortable 2) Amazing mids 3) Inline mic cable 4) value for money if you paid 100$.
CONs: 1) Average highs & lows 2) suede on pads attract dust easily 3) due to the luxury quality of the material of the pads you have to take extra care of them.

Comfort: These things are undeniably comfortable. I am a glasses wearer and found no problem what so ever with the ear pads. The top headband padding could still use a little bit more work as they only seem slightly better than standard 40-80 gaming headset. The Ear pads and clamping pressure are perfect. I didn't feel them squeezing on my head in the least but I also did not feel that they were going to fly/slip off of my head.I could and did wear these for hours without feeling like my head was worse for wear, so they are still completely acceptable.
Quality: Overall the quality looks pretty solid. Nice thick plastic that does not seem flimsy in the least. The ear pads again feel and look great. The Cord does however feel a bit thin. I don't know enough about how that will affect it but it is noticeably thin compared to other cords.
Clarity: This is the type of headphone you will find yourself falling in love with. The clarity and response time of these headphones are on point. I used some Dubstep songs with complicated, changing range and jagged bass and treble rifts. These headphones kept up with the songs in spades and i could clearly pick out quieter tracks in the background that were hard to distinguish even on the $100 HyperX Cloud II headset I was using as direct comparison. Nothing annoys me more than not being able to hear ever bit of a song through distortion caused by speakers and these headphones were an absolute pleasure to listen to.
Bass: *edited* OK out of box this is the only thing I can complain about. At first the bass was slightly lacking the punch I would have liked. This lacking was just a hair short of what I would have called satisfying which made it all the more frustrating. But with the purchase of the Sound Blaster X-Fi MB3 software I was able to tweak the sound quality using sound blaster's Crystalizer (sound clarity) and bass boost. I was able to crank the Crystalizer up to 100% and I felt like I only gained sound quality. Also I cranked the Bass boost up to 100% and was able to get that edge out of the bass that I was looking for with possibly only a very small sliver of clarity sacrificed, i really couldn't tell if much was lost. I had to come back and edit my review in an almost thank God mind set because I really love these headphones.
Game Usability: Well let me tell you that these beat out a very popular gaming headset the HyperX Cloud II. Again the sound quality was on point. However with the chaos of the whole battlefield the one distinguishing feature of the HD 598 CS is that they had incredible precision when locating the feint sounds of enemies approaching from any direction. It was somewhat startling how accurately I would hear someone behind me and be able to swing to almost a pinpoint location of where they were. This is also in part due to the HD 598 CS headphones have a very true and accurate representation of echos and fading sounds versus the at times tunnel like sounds from the HyperX Cloud II that left me slightly guessing when sounds were obscured by buildings.
Extra Features: The detachable cable I feel is a godsend. The reason i bought a new headset is because the cable on my old turtle beach headset became brittle and cracked causing the wires to become exposed, twisted, and lose integrity making them drop sound or cause the left speaker to not function. No longer do you have to worry about the cable being the weakest point of your expensive headset.
Conclusion: *edit* I give these a rating for 4.5 put of box and a 5 when combined with sound enhancing software. These Headphones are a fantastic pair to own especially at the price point i picked them up for (Black Friday $100). But I would be much more hard pressed to fork over $250 considering the competition and the price point of the other HD 598s with open back that are supposed to have a better sound stage but less bass. If I were to give a price to them for out of box use it would be $150 - 200 at most. With $30 sound enhancing software I got the bass and bass pressure to slightly increase and not distort the sound and I would gladly pay $200 and even possibly $250 for what is an absolutely amazing all around set of headphones. But $250 would be pushing it considering the other HD 598s.
Top reviews from other countries
It's been about a year and a half since my audio journey, and I've learned a lot. Mainly that Amazon has fantastic customer service haha. Thank you Amazon for your patience in me and my horrible luck with audio equipment. And my hearing is slowly getting worse, considering I can't hear past 15 kHz anymore, but I'm going to chalk that up to getting older.
Anyway, to date, I've had the pleasure of experiencing a nice variety of headphones: the HD 598 Cs, Philips SHP 9500, DT 880, Custom One Pro Plus, AKG K240, Oppo PM-3, HD 598 SE/SR, ATH-M50x, and HD 650. Thanks to this, I've learned a lot about headphones, so now I can leave a fair review of the HD 598 Cs.
First and foremost, out of all the headphones in my list, these are easily the most comfortable, to the point where I wish all headphones were this comfortable. Every time I pick them up and put them on my head, it feels like my ears are being enveloped in clouds. The soft memory foam earpads conform to your head perfectly, and this combination of light weight and padded headband on the top makes you forget that you even have anything on your head.
Now I won't go too much into the audio because it's honestly just personal preference, but I will say that I like these more than their open counterpart, which I find too neutral for my tastes. I would also pick these over the m50x any day of the week for various reasons. The 598 Cs have a good amount of bass, not enough for you bassheads, but definitely enough for an enjoyable listening session. Highs are forward as well, but personally I find the mids to be a tad in the background. In summary, these cans have a subtle V sound signature, at least to my ears. All in all, the 598 Cs is definitely good enough to tell a good recording from a bad one.
And finally, here's my new list of pros and cons. Still quite similar to what I've said before:
Pros:
+ most comfortable headphones ever
+ good sound isolation, works fine on the train
+ audio is clear and detailed
+ in line mic
+ detachable wires
Neutral:
~ not made for bassheads
~ subtle V sound signature
~ best choice for instrumental music
~ soundstage is okay
Cons:
- solid, but fabric/thread might fray if used roughly
- small bit of sound leakage
- only portable in a hard case
- proprietary 2.5mm jack in
-----------------
EDIT: Right side is suddenly quieter than the left side, sending back for a replacement.
EDIT2: Got the product replaced, and happily, this pair's headband doesn't make cracking sounds. Here's to hoping this pair doesn't have any issues!
Original Post:
My audiophile roommate recommended these when they were on sale for $125 after tax, so I bought these on impulse, since my old pair broke. His brother has the open back ones and he said they were good, but he already ordered a pair of Beyerdynamic Custom One Pro Plus, so he didn't buy these. After trying his Pro Plus for a bit, I kind of liked the way they sounded more, but they weren't as comfortable as these HD 598 Cs.
Overall, I really like this pair of headphones. I've had them for a week now, and I've been wearing them every day. They're incredibly comfortable, I've worn them all night long and for a few full days (10+ hours) already. I also have glasses, and it's still very comfortable. I'm just a little worried they're going to break, since pressing on the headband makes a cracking sound, and I have no idea why. I've been treating these with the utmost care, but the threads on the headband seems to be wearing already. I'm also a little worried about my hearing, since my eardrums hurt after long use. I don't have this problem with my other headphones, but other headphones hurt my ear so I don't usually wear those for so long, which might be the problem. When your eardrums hurt before your ears do, you know it's a comfortable pair of headphones. The in-line mic works fine, I've taken a bunch of calls and no problems whatsoever. I only wish the sound and build quality was better, because then these would be the perfect headphones.
Pros:
+ extremely comfortable, though it takes a day to get used to it
+ great sound, suits my personal tastes, I listen to a variety of genres
+ surprisingly good noise isolation despite sound leakage
+ in line mic
+ detachable wires
Cons:
- not be the best value for the price
- solid, but I feel like they're going to wear out fast
- leaks sound
- not so great for pop songs
